It
all started when they were eight
years old. Though aware of the situation and had a slight understanding of what
was about to happen, both she and her sister were understandably young and
fragile to fend for themselves, to survive on their own without the support
from their mother, which they needed the most at that time.
Scarlet sat idly by the window in her room. She woke up even
before her alarm went off. Those dreams involving her mother and her past
hadn’t come to her in her slumber for a long time now, and th
at
very same dream had woke
n
her up
to
a seemingly bright morning. The beautiful garden outside her window
which
had blooming flowers and a free-flowing fresh water
fountain made her smile despite the unpleasant dream.
It was another day for hard work and perseverance, but she
was thankful, nonetheless. After her morning ritual to freshen up herself, she
put on her usual outfit, a body-fit black blazer, white undershirt, and a black
well-fit ankle pants. The inner shirt was completely buttoned, exposing only
her neck and face, and her bangs that rested well on one side of her face.
As usual, she didn’t take her breakfast
in
the dining room
. Her
boss and his secretary would only
talk about business and schedule for the entire day. It bore her and she found
standing by the car while carefully watching, through her dark-tinted glasses,
the house helpers as they roam around the house gossiping just about anything,
especially the well-tanned body of August Mitchells, her generous client
was more entertaining
.
Minutes later, August came out of the house through the
front door, wearing an Armani sui
t and went in the waiting
car.
Scarlet closed the door for him and she went in the same car and
settled on the front seat.
Seated next to him at the back of the car
,
was his gorgeous secretary in a clean pencil cut, body-hugging, white
sleeveless dress with killer shoes. Sasha knew how to dress-up to fully
highlight her assets. For a secretary, her overall physical appearance was
overly qualified, she could be mistaken to be his girlfriend.
Sasha was a contradiction, in every aspect of herself, even
though they share the same face, and exact replica minus the heavy makeup. Her
twin sister was more of a yang energy, almost always with a positive and
hyped-up personality, while she compare
d
herself to the
yin energy. One who was more introverted and would often shy away from
a
crowd.
“Where were you
during breakfast
,
Scarlet?”
She glanced quickly at the rear view mirror to find August
looking unhappily at her. His freshly shaved face and neatly cut blackish brown
hair gave him an aura of manliness despite the irritation that laced his voice.
“I had breakfast
on
the kitchen
counter. There’s no need to get upset over a missed meal.” She put on a
straight face to avoid irritating him more. It was too early for his temper to
get out of hand.
“August, she always eats on the kitchen counter. There is no
need to get worked up over it. The talk about business and meetings doesn’t
interest her. She may fall asleep while we are discussing it over breakfast.”
Sasha grazed her well-manicured nails on the laptop bag on her lap. She too
looked irritated.
“Sasha’s right. And besides, I wouldn’t miss out on any
meal.” She glanced again at the rear view mirror.
August’s jaw moved slightly while his lips were pressed
tightly. He never liked it when Sasha acts more than a secretary. Though he
didn’t bluntly s
ay
it, but Scarlet knew he was more
irritated now at Sasha than he previously was with her. And when it came to
this, like what usually happen
s
, it was part of her job
to make him relax.
“But I can sit long enough for dinner tonight.”
“Would you?”
“Yes. The week is almost over, most of my reports are nearly
done. I can spare some time tonight.” She had to slightly smile in the hopes of
convincing him that she really was willing to join them for dinner.
“You can’t change your mind later. You already gave me your
word.”
“And she won’t, August. She w
ill not
.”
Sasha pressed her lips together, sounding displeased.
“We’re near the office building. Time to address me properly.”
He ordered in a close to whisper voice.
All of them straightened up and silently watched as the car
circled around the driveway towards the main entrance of the building.
August was probably one of the youngest and wealthiest
businessman in the country, if not the world. He was one of those lucky few
with a golden spoon since birth. But growing up, he didn’t rely on his parents’
wealth. He studied hard and worked even harder to earn the CEO position, the
spot a lot of his close relatives with a relatively decent number of shares in
the company
,
had been coveting for.
As they passed through the crowd of employees who greeted
their group politely, Scarlet remained vigilant. The security in the building
was tight, she made sure of that, but she was always weary of the many
possibilities that could happen. All of their lives, especially his, w
ere
in her hands. He trusted her keep him safe at all times,
she was determined to keep that trust as a way of repaying her life-long debt.
The elevator ride was spent in silence, and it stayed that
way until August was inside his office. Part of the daily routine was for her
to check the office first for possible hidden threat before she would leave to
supervise the security room.
“You know I don’t like it when you eat on your own.”
Scarlet paused by the door she was about to open. Her
routine check was done, her business with him at the moment was supposed to be
done, but clearly he wasn’t done with their conversation. When she turned to
face him, he was already frowning,
“Should we really discuss this here?”
“Yes, we
should
. And you’re not
leaving until you give me an explanation.”
He leaned against his extensively expensive office desk
while looking at her with more than just irritation. He was mad and it made no
sense to her. It was too early for her to deal with his mood swings.
“I have been eating breakfast on my own for a while and I
have not heard anything from you. Why would you suddenly bring that up, here
and now?”
“Leniency. I was giving you that to pay off for your hard
work. But it seems you are more than eager to continue doing this.
“Of which I am enjoying very much.”
“Which won’t do. You know how I feel about this.”
“No. We are not talking about this right now. This isn’t the
proper place.
She looked at him with a plea in her eyes. They really can’t
be emotional at the moment for so many reasons she wouldn’t dare to mention
all. But one reason was Sasha. Her twin sister ha
s
emotional feelings for August
way
over the
boss-secretary relationship and beyond platonic love. She was developing
romantic feelings for their boss and this was the reason why Sasha had been
keeping tabs of her. In some way, her sister saw her as competition.
With all her might, she wanted to prevent Sasha’s jealousy
from ever evolving into something more negative and destructive
,
knowing that
her sister
never
wanted to lose to anything.
But August was too determined to give up on his demand. He
stood up and without taking a step he stared at her with a dominating gaze, one
he would only have on when he was in absolute authority. One that spelled power
and control, one she or Sasha could never disregard or disobey.
“Come closer, Scarlet.”
She wanted to refuse, outright say no and just leave his
office, but she couldn’t. There was something in the way he looked at her, the
same unnamed element, that held her in place. Taking a slow but calculated
steps, she stood a few feet away from him.
“Closer.”
And she did step closer before stopping a foot away from
him. She looked up to stare at him straight in the eyes, they were a beautiful
light green shade that got her senseless for a few seconds. Without her
realizing it, she got lost in seeing the window of his soul open up to her.
The air inside the office was becoming stuffy, almost to the
point where she felt uncomfortable being too close to August. Aside from the
commanding stare he had given her, his aura had changed as well. She could
almost feel his other side, a side of him only seen by her and Sasha. A side she
wasn’t too pleased to discover and it still was too unpleasing to be at the
receiving end of the sudden change
August extended his hand to caress her cheek, carefully
tracing the fine lines of her facial skin. The touch made her inhale deeply in
silence. It definitely had an effect on her, but she refused to show it to
avoid
a
misunderstanding.
Clear enough, without saying anything, he had desires for
her. It may be a simple physical attraction or could be something more, but
Scarlet had no intentions of nurturing it for everyone’s sake, especially
Sasha.
“You were so cheerful and bright when we were younger. I
could always picture the young, beautiful girl with braids and a shovel
i
n her hand, singing merrily as you plow on the garden soil.”
Scarlet smiled at the memory of her childhood. Indeed, those
were the days when she had nothing to worry about but the dying plants in the
garden or how the flowers would look when in bloom. Those were the days when
her life was less complicated and perhaps, the only days when she was lively.
Things had changed drastically.
“Where is my little Allie? I miss her.”
She averted her gaze to focus on something more trivial than
recalling her childhood memories. No matter how tempting the trip to memory
lane was, she can’t abandon her resolve, not even when his voice sounded sad
and hurt. She can’t give in.
“She’s gone, August. A long time ago.”
His hand that was toying with a few strands of her hair
dropped to his side, followed by a burdened sigh. As he wearily stared at her
for a few seconds, looking crestfallen and seemingly tired, she took a few
steps backward and smile
d
sadly at him.
“She’s never coming back, so please stop looking for her.”
Her own words had formed a lump on her throat. As painful as
it was for
her
as it was for him, she needed him to
hear it from her with clarity, that her old twelve-year-old self which he
adored so much had no room within her current self. It died together with the
lives lost in the accident sixteen years ago.
“That may be true for now, Allie. But I could only hope and
try harder from now until you become yourself again.”
There was bitterness in his words and regret too. It wasn’t
necessary for him to be feeling these things for her sake since it would only
burden him a lot more. The past were memories
one
could
leave behind without totally forgetting about it, but it shouldn’t be a
hindrance for someone to move forward.
“Stop. Just please stop, August. It’s unfair.”
He was about to respond when the door swung open and Sasha
joined them. Her expression was blank, but Scarlet knew otherwise. Her twin
sister was furious that she had stayed longer than necessary and aggravated by
the fact that she was alone with him.
“Scarlet! Isn’t it time for you to head back to the security
room
?
Your job is there. This is my place.
“I was about to leave, Sasha.”
She nodded towards August
’s
direction and left the room without saying anything else. While closing the
door behind her, she heard Sasha asking him what they were talking about.
Whatever his answer was, the door was already closed.
The secretary’s office
,
which had
Sasha written all over it
,
had been her sister’s little
empire. It was luxurious and spacious. She walked out of the room and went
straight to her own private office inside the security room. In there, were two
huge monitor screens which gave her access to the camera footages within the
building and the surrounding area. She hesitated for a minute before finally
deciding to use the mouse and clicked on the window she was itching to watch.
Sasha was hovering over his table as she read through the
list of schedules he had for the day. She was clearly showing more of her
cleavage, seducing him relentlessly with her assets. As her twin sister did her
petty tricks, August was typing something on his laptop, totally unaffected by
the beauty willingly offered to him.
It was the usual view she would see whenever Sasha was in
his office. And often times, his reaction would always be the same, it became
tiresome. Sometimes, she wished he would give into Sasha’s advances, or if not,
reconsider his thoughts and feeling for her twin. That was the only solution
to
their growing inner conflict. But she could only wish
halfheartedly. Somewhere, at the back of her mind, she had hoped for something
else.
She closed the window on the screen when Sasha left his
office. After a refreshing cold water drink, she proceeded with her work. The
security micro teams had sent in their reports for the day and she had
completed her report as well. The day went well
,
she couldn’t
wait to head home and rest. She badly needed to unload the stuff in her chest
that lingered after the conversation with August.
Walking down the hallway that led to the elevator, she met
August walking rather quickly towards the same way, followed closely behind by
Sasha.
“You can’t skip dinner; you gave me your word.”
Okay. So he was at it again.
“I won’t.”
“Good. Now there has been a change of plans.”
