Iris
by Goo Goo Dolls

And I'd give up forever to touch you

'Cause I know that you feel me somehow

You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be

And I don't wanna go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment

And all I can breathe is your life

When sooner or later it's over

I just don't wanna miss you tonight

And I don't want the world to see me

'Cause I don't think that they'd understand

When everything's made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming

Or the moment of truth in your lies

When everything feels like the movies

Yeah, you bleed just to know you're alive

And I don't want the world to see me

'Cause I don't think that they'd understand

When everything's made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am...

PART ONE

Three Years Earlier

“You’re a waste of my time, Em.  What kind of girlfriend does this?”

Emily sat on the sofa staring at her boyfriend of the last eighteen months.  Inwardly she sighed.  Why did this conversation not surprise her?  She reached up and pinched the top of her nose under her brown framed glasses.

Was she a horrible person for feeling relieved?

“What do you want me to say, Scott?”

It was a similar conversation to all of the other ones they’d been having for the last few months.  The oft said complaint on Scott’s part was she was too strong, too masculine in her ‘ways’, was always in control. She wasn’t fun enough.  She sensed that her strength made him feel emasculated which made her sigh again.  Well, it’s not like he really needed her.  Or at least he certainly flirted enough with other girls to make her feel like he didn’t.  He’d been like that since day one and she knew that going in, but somehow being a 23, soon to be 24, year old virgin at the time bothered her more than this asshole’s disrespectful ways.

When it came to men, she was always doing something wrong.

He snorted.  “Nothing.  I just want you to listen.  I’m so done with you.”  He paused and looked at her with pity.  Then in a patronizing tone, as if talking to a child, he said, “Do you understand what I’m saying?  I don’t want you, Emily.”

O-kay.  That was a little harsh.  Not that she could blame him that much.  With law school, they had drifted apart, and she wasn’t exactly giving it up recently.  And wasn’t sex the reason most men her age were in relationships in the first place?

She gritted her teeth and swallowed down her anger.  Why did she even care?  She didn’t even love him.  Did she ever?  It was the thought of someone not taking the time to know her that hurt the most.  He never truly cared about her.  She knew that.

You just don’t understand me

And I’m not willing to make you understand me if you don’t want to take the time.

“You’re right, Scott.  Let’s just end it and call it a day.”

He sneered and shook his head.

“What kind of girlfriend are you, anyway?” he repeated, always having to have the last word.  “I mean, what girl doesn’t have sex with her boyfriend?  I guess you can just keep going to your Krav Maga classes, keeping all that tightly reined control,” he said waving his hands in the air.  “Kicking ass like you’re used to.  Find some guy you can pummel on for a while.  That apparently makes you feel more like a man.  Oops.  I mean, woman.”

“What the fuck, Scott?  The gloves are finally coming off, is that it?  Let’s just get it all out there.”

“Yeah, let’s do that.  You wanna know what?”  He took a step closer to the sofa, waving his finger.  “I thought when I found out you did Judo and shit you’d be a hot fuck in the sack.  Instead, you’re the most repressed woman I’ve ever met.  Fahckin’ you was like sticking my dick
into a glass of cold water.”  His Boston roots were coming out in his frustration as he pronounced his words.
