Jasper pulled me away and took a deep breath. “Um. Before we walk across that stage, I’ve got something for you too.”

He raised the plastic bag he had been carrying around and which I’d thought contained only the street shoes he’d changed out of, but he reached into it and produced a wrapped parcel. I took it and tore into it without hesitation, my heart hammering. Was this a breaking-up soften-the-blow kinda gift? Please, no.

It was a book as well. I was confused until I noticed the title.

Just like that, I was grinning like an idiot. “Does that mean you want to try?”

“Yeah,” Jasper said. “I want to try. It’s only two hours’ drive. I think we can do it. I

to do it.”

“Okay, cool,” I said, and hugged, lifted, and kissed him in front of the entire assembled senior class.
