Readers' Guide Questions
1.
Ava's prayer at the beginning seems sincere. Do you think she truly believes she can overcome her past behavior where men are concerned? Have you ever prayed a prayer that you weren't totally confident in? What was the result?
2.
In chapter 1, Ava compares herself to Rene and Toni physically. What do you think drives us to compare ourselves to others?
3.
Xavier has had a mental hold over Ava. Do you feel if she had a better self-image, she would've been able to let him go sooner? Have you ever been in this position? How did you respond?
4.
In chapter 8, Ava's mother calls and compares Ava to her brother. Have you ever been a part of a sibling rivalry? Was it one you created, or was it parent-driven? How has this judgmental behavior of her mother affected their relationship?
5.
After Ava and Ishmael sleep together in chapter 8, Ava immediately feels regret. Have you ever done anything you knew was wrong, but went ahead with it because you felt important, special, or loved? What was the result?
6.
In chapter 12, Ava prepares to tell Rene what happened between her and Ishmael. Do you think you'd be able to fess up to your friend? Why or why not?
7.
In chapter 19, after Ava learns she's pregnant, she has suicidal thoughts. Sometimes we have to hit our rock bottom for our eyes to truly be opened to the self-destruction we are committing. Have you ever gone through this? How'd you handle it? How did this scene affect you?
8.
When Dr. Moses prays over Ava, she says that Ava is “fearfully and wonderfully made.” Do you feel that way about yourself? If not, what has kept you from thinking this about yourself?
9.
Sometimes it takes a tragedy to bring people together. After Ava is struck by a car and put in the hospital, Rene comes to visit her even though they haven't spoken in months. Have you ever overcome a struggle with a close friend? Did the relationship go back to normal or did you treat each other differently than before?
10.
In the last chapter, Ava says that she must like herself before anyone else can. How do you feel about that statement?
11.
The last line of the novel, Ava gets to ask her friends to watch her purse, something she's had to do all her adult life. How do you think this monumental moment added to her confidence to move forward in who she is at the end of the novel?
