Chapter 1

T
his is unbelievable
! Take me back,
now!
” Ali yelled over her shoulder as she trampled through the poppy field. “Shift into your wolf!”

Following a few languid steps behind her, Red answered with a smirk, “No.”

With a loud shriek of impatience, Ali balled her hands into fists and broke into a run. She couldn’t believe her ears. Flipping around, she stared at him, jamming her hands onto her hips. “Are you
laughing?

He scratched his light brown beard and grinned, “Yeah! Is that as fast as you can go?”

For an infuriating hour, she’d been trying to get him to take her back to where he’d found her. The sky was a darkening gray, the sun a memory. Not good. The pack would be awake soon if not already. How she would hide having been with him when she finally returned, she didn’t know.

Red’s clear blue eyes sparkled in the disappearing light as she approached. She smiled at him…and he cocked his chin a little in surprise.

“It is pretty funny, isn’t it?” She offered him a hint of a smile, adding an extra sway to her hips as she fluffed up her hair with one hand.

His eyes flickered, the smirk changing to aroused interest. “I thought so, yeah. It’s hilarious.”

She smiled up at his lying face. He stared down at her, his concentration intense. She bent her chin up for a kiss and as soon as he leaned down to oblige, she slapped him. Hard. “There’s no way we’ll make it all the way back up that mountain in time now! We are
in danger
! Don’t you understand?”

At the mere suggestion, he lost his smile. “You underestimate me if you think that is true.”

She threw her arms in the air. “I’m not trying to insult you, but there is one of you and eight of them. And I’m in the middle, Red! Do you think I won’t get hurt?”

His eyes darkened. “I won’t let that happen.”

“Hey brick wall, nice to meet you. Could you help me out?!” She paced around, casting wary glances to the darkening sky. “I mean, really! Can you be any more stubborn? I need you to listen to me! Turn into your wolf and take me back! Maybe I can repair the damage.” Meeting his eyes, she tried a reverse, competitive psychology. “Unless you’re faster than I think you are?”

His jaw ticked and he turned his head, looking behind and to the west. Through gritted teeth, he regretfully informed her, “The sun is too far gone. They’re probably already awake.” On her raised eyebrow, he added quickly, “I can run faster than when we came, but it would not make up the time.”

She shook her head, letting out a harsh laugh. “Great. This is great.”

He reached out with his long arm and grabbed her chin, guiding her back to him by it. His tone became intimate and caring in a way that made her heart flutter despite herself. “Ali. Do you want to be with him that badly? Why not come with me?”

A betraying stutter could not be hidden as she stared up at him. “I…I don’t want my choice taken from me! You tricked me.” She stepped back, pulling out of his light grip. His hand hung in the air in her absence. He dropped it as she turned.

She didn’t like the impact he had on her, but his power did not change the fact that she hated being lied to. And not only that, she hadn’t planned on hurting Calt when she’d left to spend the day with the boy she used to love. Naïvely, she’d thought she could be back in time, and that nothing would have changed.
Everything
had changed. The boy was now a man who felt amazing in her arms. His confidences he shared had only brought them closer. And she had shared some of herself as well. She could not deny the pull to him. It was alarming. But still…

I will not leave Calt like this. No explanation. No anything.

Her sneakers plodded past the outskirts of the poppy field and onto soft, moist ground that hardened more with every step, as the distance between them and the marshy land grew. She tightened the pelt around her, aware Red was following her. What very little light that remained was vanishing quickly, and her heartbeat picked up speed, terrified he wouldn’t succumb to reason. How could she climb that monstrosity of a mountain with no light? She squinted and stared up at it as she stumbled, gaining speed.

“Even if I wanted to go with you, this isn’t the way to do it!” she muttered under her breath, looking hopelessly to the sky. Was there no moon tonight? How had it gotten so dark?

He ran to catch up, keeping pace as he reached her side. His tone was low and demanding. “So you do want to go with me?”

She cast an agitated look sideways. “I didn’t say that! I said
if.
” She almost ran into a seven-foot-high fallen sequoia tree trunk that blocked her way. She chewed on her lips, pausing as she stared at it. When she glanced to him, his smirk made her growl with anger. Grabbing onto the red bark, she pulled herself up, using the sides of her shoes to wedge her footing in and push off with. Grunting, she climbed it as she told him, “I can’t just run off like some disrespectful bitch. Plus, and it’s not easy to say this, but I don’t know if I want to! You are really getting on my last nerve.” Reaching the top, she jumped down with a painful, “Oof!”

“You’re not exactly easy to stomach right now either, Ali.” Red leapt over the trunk easily, landing softly and despite his large form, with grace. Oh, and naked.

Ali’s jaw dropped. “You really are a superhero! It’s so not fair.” She flipped around and continued onward, grumbling over her shoulder as she tried to get the image of his bouncing cock out of her mind, “You don’t understand, Red. This whole pack thing is something I’ve never had. I mean, my aunt and uncle were never around, and when they were, they weren’t! They were always on their phones or computers, or working and making it very clear that everyone and everything was more important than
I
was. It wasn’t a family unit like the one I saw last night. With the exception of Tawny, they were a team. I want that! I don’t just want me and one other person. Or werewolf. Or you know what I mean. I want a family. I want community.” She looked over to see if he was listening. He was. “And don’t get me wrong, his pack isn’t all joy-and-roses to see me, but some of them have…er, taken a liking to me, I guess. One said give it time. And I want to do that! I belong here! I can feel it.”

She yelped as he grabbed her and spun her around, bringing her close. “You are supposed to be here, but you’re supposed to be with me.”

“Shouldn’t I be the judge of that? Or do you force everyone to be with you?”

Anger flew across his features. “I lied when I told you I would bring you back in time, yes! Forgive me!” She glared at him, refusing to soften. He made an impatient sound. “Ali, I understand very well what being part of pack means. It took me a long time to find mine, so believe me, nobody knows better than I do how important that is. But my pack, they are not murderers such as the ones you so hunger to get back to!”

Sparks flew around inside her as she countered, “There you go calling them murderers again. Who did they kill? Or do they just kill everyone, is that it? Or are you lying about that, too? Because I’m still alive, aren’t I?” He didn’t answer, but something dark enough to scare her lit up his eyes. She lowered her voice to a more gentle tone. “I’m sure your pack is wonderful. I have no doubt you love them and that they’re your family. But my coming with you will start a war, Red! Don’t you see? They’ll be in danger because of me. And then they’ll blame me for that; I would! It can’t be done like this. It just can’t.”

He released her and looked to the ground, resisting her logic. “They would have to accept you if I claimed you as my mate.”

Ali sighed, “I’ve already gone through that; someone got a leg broken.”

His eyes cut to hers and he growled, “He hurt one of his own?”

She hurriedly shook her head, “To protect me!” Off his look of alarm, she explained, “I think there was a fight because he told a human being their secret for the first time, but I don’t know for sure. Shit! Why did I tell you that?”

“If you were in danger, I would have fought my own for you, as well,” he grumbled, wrapping his arms around her again. “Ali, I just wish I’d found you first. If I had, this argument would not be happening.”

She reached up and touched his neck, slid her hand up around it. “If you had found me first, you’re probably right. I would be with you. But I met
him
first and I can’t pretend that didn’t happen. I don’t want to be the reason either of your families is in danger. Please. Just let me have some time to figure out what to do.”

“Then will you be with me?”

She stared at him, knowing she couldn’t say
yes
, and be honest. She still wasn’t sure. Calt was the first man to ever claim her and something had happened with them, a bond had been formed. She needed to see him again to see how she felt, now that Red had clawed his way into her heart again. She needed face-to-face contact to decide.

She said nothing and offered no answer, but instead closed her eyes and parted her lips, hoping for a kiss. He hesitated for only a moment and then crushed her against his chest, lowering his head to brush his lips against hers, the warmth sending tingles down her spine. She sighed into his mouth and he kissed her harder in response, searching her for the answer he wanted, that she was his. She tried to resist him, to push him away, but even she knew she didn’t mean it when she said, “I can’t. We have to get back…”

He did not let go. Licking his way down her neck, he opened the front of her pelt with his teeth, and groaned as her breasts tumbled out. “I can be quick.”

The memory of the way he felt inside her tore down her resolve faster than a house of cards in a storm. Her eyelids felt heavy and her body moved against her better judgment. She whispered on a moan, “Will you take me back?”

He nodded as he licked his lips and kissed one of her nipples, his breath hot against her bare skin. “Mmmhmm.”

“You promise? You have to promise,” she breathed, arching her back.

He nodded again and gave her sensitive little crest a gentle bite. “Mmmhmm.”

She climbed on top of him, hooking her legs around his perfect ass where he stood. She clawed onto his back to hold on as he suckled her and palmed himself to position it just outside of her slick folds. She was already wet, had been since she slapped him.

“You have to be fast.” The words
Don’t forget, you promised!
were lost as he slid his gorgeous cock inside her with an urgent, claiming thrust. Sore, she winced and swore at herself for being such an insatiable mess. Had someone told her back when she was in Starbucks ordering almond milk in her latte from a pixie-haired hipster, that she would be fucked hard–and well–by two werewolves in Yosemite National Park, she would have laughed in their face. She would have informed them that not only did werewolves not exist, but also she had never slept with more than one man at a time in her whole life. She was a good girl. Always had a boyfriend. Always wished he could fuck her like Red was fucking her now, with sure powerful thrusts that filled her completely each and every time.

But being good wasn’t what she wanted to be anymore.

His mouth traced back up to hers as he slowly fucked her, the pleasure replacing the pain as she got more excited. “So tight. You feel so good, Ali!” He pulled one of her thighs up and down in time with his hips. Up and down, rubbing her swollen clit in steady strokes against his skin as he went deep.

The sounds of them echoed in the darkness. She couldn’t see anything anymore; if there was a moon out, the dense trees created a thick blanket that blocked it out completely. It added to the mystery, not being able to see him when he dipped to suck on her neck, or when he came back up and took her eager mouth in his, working his cock steadily into her as she cried out, “Harder. You’re holding back! Please, harder!”

The baby hairs on her neck vibrated as he murmured thickly, “I can go much harder, Ali. You sure?”

She threw her head back and moaned, “Fuck me as hard as you want to!”

She cried out as he slammed his cock into her with greater force. She felt him expand and spread her cunt more with his growing size. “Yes!” she cried, caught mercilessly in that sweet spot between pain and ecstasy. She clawed into his shoulders and threw her head back.

He held her up with one hand, moving in her like a man who knows how. He grunted and groaned and released her thigh to tangle his fingers in her hair and pull her head back, growling into her breasts, “You’re mine!”

She shut her eyes as the orgasm ripped through her body, each sweet, hot wave greater than the last.

“Mine! Mine!!”

She moaned low and long in answer, hating how much she loved the word. Mine.
His.
Just as Calt had claimed her as his. She wanted to be his…his
and
his.

He didn’t let up, pounding her harder until he finally groaned, “Fuck! I can feel your pussy vibrating!” His hips rose up then and he held inside her as his seed spilled. Jerking into her, he tightened his grip in her hair and sucked hungrily on any part of her flesh his lips could hungrily discover–her shoulders, her breasts, her neck, her mouth, everything as she whimpered in his arms.

He lowered her to the ground, still inside her as he moved the pelt to make sure she had something between her and the unforgiving, cool earth.

“I don’t know what to do!” she whispered.

He sighed into her hair. “I know.”

“I’m a horrible person!”

Red laughed. A mistake.

She backed away and disengaged from his body like she’d been bit. “You think this is funny? It’s not funny! None of this is funny. I don’t recognize myself!”

“Hey!” He leapt forward and pinned her with the hot, heavy weight of his torso. “You have nothing to be ashamed about!”

Her lip quivered and she jerked her chin away. “I’m out here in the dark. I can’t see anymore! And I just fucked the wolf who lied to me. The longer we stay here, the more danger we’re in. I mean, come on! I’m the poster child for therapy recruitment.”

“We are not in any danger. I will not let anything happen to you. There is nothing wrong with what we did. I would do it again right now. In fact, I could if you wanted me to. Don’t say you don’t.”
