Her pulse ramped to an even faster pace. Using her knee, she pushed his thigh and sent him off balance. When he fell on top of her, she wrapped her legs around his hips and said in a voice full of need, “Then what’s stopping him?”

Landon literally shook to the core, he was holding so much back. He wasn’t lying to her about his wolf. The beast was ramming his head against Landon’s chest in fast, powerful thumps to the same rhythm of his rampant heart. The tips of his fingers tingled and worry for Kaitlyn rippled through him.

He opened his hands and slid them off hers to the top of the bed. Grabbing hold of the rough-hewn wood slats, he kissed her throat. “My wolf is primal in his desires. I—”

She put her hands on his face and lifted his jaw so he had to meet her gaze. “I love you. You must trust your wolf to care for my well-being as much as you do. You’ve watched over me all my life and kept me safe. Your wolf was a part of that journey. He loves me, too.”

Wrapping her arms around his neck, she pulled him close and whispered in his ear. “Do you feel this wild heart hammering against your chest? It beats for you and your wolf, loving both equally. Let him go.”

When she pressed her lips against his neck and undulated under him, Landon’s hands cinched tighter around the rails. Kaitlyn’s acceptance of him—hell, even her encouragement of his wolf—turned him on like no woman ever had. Her slick heat slid along his cock and she arched until the tip of his erection pressed against her sex.

He kissed her with every pent-up desire he’d ever held back. She moaned and met his tongue’s aggressive thrusts with her own pent-up need. Her sweet-scented arousal permeated his wolf’s senses, wrapping around him in provocative primal notes.

Pressing his nose against her neck, Landon inhaled her floral aroma and closed his eyes, tensing his entire frame. With powerful restraint, he slid the tip of his erection just inside her channel. Her ragged breaths made his wolf snarl his displeasure from being held back. Landon was so primed, he thought he might snap any second. Sweat coated his back as he fought his wolf. No matter what she said, he refused to trust the beast with his mate’s life.

Kaitlyn’s soft hands slid down his back, her calm, gentle touch a stark contrast to the battle waging inside him. I will keep her safe. His wolf’s vow was low and edgy. He pawed his impatience inside Landon’s chest, ready to pounce. Landon snarled at the wolf to keep him at bay.

“Let him have me,” Kaitlyn panted in desperation and dug her nails into his back, pulling him further inside her.

Her primal response spiked Landon’s. He growled and thrust deeply into her sweet warmth, groaning when she gasped in pleasure and tilted her hips, encouraging him.

“Harder, Landon. So-o-o-o-o good.”

The wolf roared his satisfaction and his claws speared deeply into the bedposts. Landon held perfectly still and growled at the wolf. The beast snarled back and the combined untamed sounds rumbled in his chest.

“Landon,” Kaitlyn panted. Sweat coated her skin and she trembled all over, waiting for him to move.

Kaitlyn put her trust in him, fully and completely. Landon knew he needed to make peace with himself. He took a deep breath and quit fighting his wolf. A splitting pain shot though his head. He grunted at the sharpness, even as he accepted his wolf. The fierce dual feelings melded into one, allowing him to retract his claws. As Landon fully absorbed his wolf, he slid his hands in Kaitlyn’s damp hair and kissed her forehead. “I love you, Kaitie.” His voice sounded ragged and raw as if he’d yelled for hours.

Tears shimmered in her eyes as she ran her fingers along his temples.

“Your eyes are shot with streaks of light green. I told you.”

He smiled. “This wolf will always cherish and protect you.”

She sobbed and hugged him close. “I love you, too.”

Landon’s feelings for Kaitlyn had grown even deeper with this unique experience. He never thought he would find a woman who could shred his heart and then mend it so thoroughly with something as simple as her complete trust.

When she began to squirm underneath him, he held her face. “My instincts are very base and primal. I can’t guarantee I’ll always been a gentle lover.”

“Good. I’m glad to know you don’t have total control.” She gave him a broad smile and pushed him on his side and then onto his back. Straddling him, she grasped his erection and took him deep within her, moaning her pleasure.

Her eyes glittered with desire in the moonlight as she lifted up and then sank back down on his hard cock. Sweat glistened on her skin and she keened, throwing her head back. Her red hair fell down her back as her beautiful, lithe body clasped him, stroking them both to new pleasurable heights.

Landon grasped her slim waist and waited for her to repeat the erotic movement. When she did, he thrust upward and deep, making her cry out and beg for more. Every nerve in his body roared with heat as if he were ready to burst into flames. It wasn’t just where their bodies met. He burned everywhere.

And then his cock began to tingle with sparks of molten heat. He wanted to roll her over and take her deep and hard, but Landon held back, waiting, hoping she wanted the same.

Kaitlyn gasped and sank down on him. Rubbing her body against him, her sultry gaze locked with his and she ran her nails down his chest. “Rough would feel really good right about now.”

Kaitlyn’s excitement vaulted to new heights when Landon reversed their position. Grasping her hands beside her head against the bed, he slowly sank inside her and said, “Is this what you want?”

She lifted her legs around his waist and bit her bottom lip. “Don’t hold back.”

Landon growled and pushed her deeper into the mattress with his forceful, downward thrust. Splinters of pleasure, spiked with heat, shot though her core, making her breath hitch. She squeezed her fingers tight around his. “Harder,” she demanded.

Landon withdrew and gave a grunt of male pleasure as he filled her full once more. This time harder and deeper. He felt so hot and touched every part of her so completely she couldn’t speak, but whimpered in total bliss.

When he didn’t move and his hips stayed flush, cradled in hers, she just stared at him in disbelief. Her entire body was shaking with the need for release. She tried to move and he growled at her, his expression fiercely primal.

Kaitlyn felt as if he had grown harder and was stretching her even more. The heat inside her was almost unbearable. Her body began to shake.

“Landon,” she started to beg. She felt light-headed, ready to faint at the hot intensity.

Landon’s jaw flexed, and as he groaned and ground his body against hers, she felt it; strong pulses hard and deep inside her. The vibrations sent Kaitlyn’s own body spiraling over the edge.

As Landon withdrew and took her hard, she surged against him and screamed so loudly her throat burned. Her body convulsed and wave after wave of euphoria rocked through her core with her orgasm. Sheer ecstasy ricocheted throughout her sensitized nerves, shattering every idea she’d ever thought she knew about her own body and what it really meant to make love to another.

As Landon collapsed on top of her, breathing heavily, she took her own deep breaths and stroked his back in tender caresses. She was blown away by the realization that what they shared, this whole mind and body loving experience, was beautiful and precious. She’d truly found her perfect mate in every respect.

Landon rolled onto his side and pulled her against him. Kaitlyn started to lay her cheek on his chest, but his necklace was in the way. She moved to lift it over his head, but his mouth formed a hard line and he shook his head. Pushing the bullet to the other side of his chest, he then pressed her close. When she sighed and lay down, he kissed the top of her head and ran his hand down her back to the curve of her hip and then back up in languid strokes. She snuggled close to his hard, warm body and inhaled his intoxicating, musky scent.

The gentle brush of his fingertips against her skin made her feel so safe and comforted. As her mind and body began to relax, she thought about the chain and bullet around his neck and wished she could think of a way to convince him to remove it.

Chapter 16

A series of loud howls jerked Kaitlyn from her slumber. Landon wasn’t in bed. He stood naked in the pool of moonlight staring out the window. She glanced at the clock and realized the sun would be up in an hour. Heart thumping, she climbed out of bed and walked over to stand beside him. Landon pulled her in front of him and wrapped his arms around her waist as she stared out the window. Wolves littered the back lawn all the way to the trees. “One hundred and fifty,” he whispered in her ear as the majestic animals in various shades from black to brown to gray and every shade in between continued their baying.

The howls were soulful and long, and her heart twisted when she realized they were paying homage to Landon as their new Alpha. He should be out there with them, enjoying the last bit of moonlight. As the animals’ song died down and they bounded off into the woods, Kaitlyn turned in Landon’s arms and touched the chain on his neck. “You should be out there with your pack. I want you to remove it.”

Landon lifted her fingers to his lips. He kissed her palm and met her gaze, his own full of sorrow and regret. “I can’t ever forget what I did, Kaitie.”

She shook her head. “I’m not asking you to forget, just to forgive yourself.” Lifting the wolf charm on her thin silver chain, she held it up.

“My father gave this to me and told me the wolf would keep me safe. Ever since that day, I’ve worn this necklace.”

When she started to lift the chain off her neck he frowned and held her hand in place. “What are you doing?”

She gave him a confident smile and removed her necklace. She felt strange and oddly freed as soon as her neck was bare. “I don’t need it any more. I have my very own wolf to watch over me now.” Placing her hand on his chest, she continued, “But he can only protect me and those he loves if he’s not restricted in any way. Don’t you see? The chain slows you down and keeps you from protecting us as an Alpha should. James McKinney wouldn’t want that, either as a cop or as my father.”

Landon clasped her hand and his hard expression shifted from understanding to acceptance. “If I remove this chain, I’ll instantly shift to my wolf form.”

The tension in her shoulders relaxed. Blinking back tears of relief, she said, “I want to see how beautiful you are. Let me do it.”

When he nodded, she lifted the chain from around his neck. By the time she’d lowered the chain to her side, Landon had already shifted. A huge brown wolf with silver markings along his ears and around his muzzle and shoulders stared intently at her.

Kaitlyn cupped her hand over her mouth and tears blurred her vision as she realized Landon was the wolf painted on her wall. He was the wolf her father had seen.

The wolf stepped closer and sat in front of her. She blinked back the moisture and fell to her knees. “You’re so beautiful!” Wrapping her arms around his neck, she cried into his soft fur. “Don’t you ever put that damned necklace on again.”

The wolf laid his chin on her shoulder and placed his paw on her thigh. When she pulled back, he licked her face.

Kaitlyn laughed. “I know you can speak to me mentally. Stop playing the wolf role to the nth degree.”

The wolf tilted his head and she heard his voice in her head. The look of love on your face was worth every bit of torture I’ve put myself through. I love you even more for embracing every part of me. She sniffed back her tears and kissed his muzzle before she stood. Walking over to the window, she opened it wide then turned back to the wolf. “I know we’re up a story, but I saw Caine jump from four stories just fine. Go and enjoy your last bit of moonlight. I’m sure come next month I won’t see hide nor hair of you for three days while you make up for lost time.”

The wolf stood and his entire body tensed. Are you sure?

Laughing, she swept her arm toward the open window. “Go. Quit wasting precious time.”

The wolf took a flying leap, his powerful muscles stretching and flexing as he sailed across the room and right out the window. Kaitlyn rushed to the window’s edge and smiled as she watched him dash into the woods.

Landon found his pack and ran with the other wolves for a while, but as the impending sunrise drew near, he moved to the woods closer to his cabin. He didn’t want to be too far from Kaitlyn while he enjoyed his last bit of wolf freedom.

When he heard the sound of an animal crashing through the woods, he knew it was something large. A deer, maybe. Landon took off after the sound, bounding over large rocks and around trees as he hunted his prey. He moved quickly, knowing the sun was almost upon him.

As he barreled through the woods he nearly ran into the animal that was heading straight toward him. Landon’s paws skidded in the forest underbrush at the sight of a smaller wolf flying through the air toward him. It had a gorgeous auburn coat just like—

The wolf slammed into him and knocked him onto his back. Kaitlyn’s laughter entered his mind at the same time the sun peeked through the dense forest.

How is this possible? he wondered even as he felt his wolf form release and he shifted back to his human form. The rocks and sticks against his bare back pinched uncomfortably with a hundred-and-twenty-pound female wolf on his chest, but he didn’t care. He held on to the wolf above him and waited for her to shift, but the red wolf just panted happily and then licked him all over his face.

“Stop that,” he finally said and rolled out from underneath her. Alarm settled in his chest when the wolf pranced around as if she didn’t have a care in the world. “Why aren’t you shifting?”

The wolf stopped and sat, staring at him.

“Can you speak to me?” he asked, tension making his voice rough. A slim red shoulder lifted and then dropped.
