The place was jarringly devoid of anything other than the cubes. Even the cavern’s walls were in panels like the floor. Both were a mustard hue.
“Okay. So far, so good. Jules, was there a yellow button on the panel?” She vaguely remembered seeing what might have been a yellowish button at the bottom of his map. But if there was one, and this was the room designated by that color, there was the possibility there was a panel in here.
Kyber’s expression of horror and regret flashed in her mind again. Her breath hitched in her chest and a tear rolled down her cheek. It was warm on her cold skin. “You think I’m dead, don’t you?” Without knowing where she’d gone, Kelen knew he wouldn’t be looking for her. Not when Hoov and the others were still in pursuit.
Reaching inside her pocket, she withdrew the little button that Dox had planted on her. “Is this still working? Can you see it on your screen?” If they saw it, would they know she was alive and come back for her? Or would they assume she was dead and ignore the signal?
Kelen bowed her head. She had to find her way back to the others. Somehow. Someway. Yes, with her unable to put her weight on her leg, and one hand out of commission, she was faced with a daunting task, but she was damned and determined to succeed, if for no other reason than to see Kyber’s look of sorrow and disbelief turn to joy, and to feel his arms around her again.
This would not be the end of them. This planet would not win.
Boosted by self-confidence and determination, Kelen slid off the cube. Crawling across the floor, she began searching for the transportation panel.
