I may be surrounded by people. People who love me, yet I still manage to feel isolated. Over in the far corner, underneath the Magnolia tree, momma is waving at me. Next to her stands my father, Ted Jenson. Since discovering our connection nearly four years ago, I wouldn’t have said our relationship has progressed, or that we share the same bond as he does with his other daughter, Baby Blu.
Hastily I scanned the yard looking for a means of escape, when my cell began to ring. A look at the caller ID shows the number to be blocked and just as I was about to hit decline, Sundance whispered in my ear.
“Answer it.”
Then he was gone. Another look around the yard shows no one was interested in my call and because I was bored, I answered. After all, what did I have to lose?
“Hello.”
“Happy Birthday Apple Pie.”
My heart leaped as my hand gripped the phone tighter and I gave a furtive glance around the yard. Terrified someone could hear.
“Crabby.”
My voice was a squeaky whisper, not daring to breathe, in case I woke from some sleep state I had fallen into.
“Yes Apple-Pie.”
This wasn’t one of our pre-arranged calls. And when he did ring, either Tabby or Inferno would be close by, watching and listening. Not wanting to miss out on our time alone, I quickly discovered that both of my brother-in-laws were busy with their wives, Rayven and Baby Blu.
Although I had sauntered over to an empty part of the yard, I still didn’t have the privacy I wanted with Crabby.
“How long do we have Crabby?”
All my calls with the biker were always too brief, over before they have begun. The line was silent, and for a moment, I thought I had lost him. Then his voice crackled over the line.
“We have a couple of minutes Apple-Pie.”
As I listened to Crabby’s voice, I closed my eyes and in my head, I can smell him. The sandalwood aftershave he uses is drowning out my senses. Silently I moan. I want to reach out and touch the man. To feel his skin against mine and to taste his kiss. Not the brotherly ones he used to plant on my forehead when we first met. But to kiss him as his woman.
Patiently I have waited for my man, denying myself the touch of someone else. The nights were the worst. Where I’d lay in bed, dreaming of his body, only to wake in a cold sweat. An ache in my body, which was left unsatisfied.
“Apple-Pie.”
Shit, I was wasting time daydreaming instead of talking to the man I love. Yet I was unable to find my tongue, or to vocalize what I wanted to say to him.
“Crabby. How?”
“How what?”
“How are you making this call?”
My toes curled and my stomach flipped when his deep chuckle reached out and caressed my flesh. For a moment, I forgot we were separated by a couple of hundred miles. Again, there was that chuckle. Okay, so it was a silly question.
“How’s the party Apple-Pie?”
“Boring.”
“Parties are never boring Apple-Pie.”
“They are when you’re not here.”
“I’ll be there for your next one.”
Crabby’s words brought a smile to my face. Not a halfhearted obliging smile, but a full beaming one, which caused my cheeks to ache. Soon we’d be together. It was only as my eyes landed on Tabby, that my enthusiasm faded slightly. I am fully aware that the people at this gathering weren’t happy or condoning of my relationship with Crabby. To them it was just a silly schoolgirl phase I was going through. Soon, however, Crabby and I were going to prove them wrong and they were going to have accept us as a couple.
“Crabby.”
“Yes, Apple-Pie.”
“I love you.”
The words had come rushing out before I could stop them and because I didn’t regret saying them, I repeated myself. Although Crabby didn’t reiterate the words back to me, I convinced myself, I didn’t need them. Today was my birthday and he had gone to the effort of calling me. A call, which was probably illicit.
“Crabby can I come and see you?”
“I’d like that Apple-Pie.”
“I’ve my driver’s license. I won’t need anyone to bring me Crabby. Just you and me.”
Crabby’s deeply indrawn breath came over the line loud and clear. On all of my previous visits, I had been accompanied by someone. Now I was taking my life into t my own hands.
“I’d like that Apple-Pie.”
I wanted to tell Crabby so much. To let him know how my heart beats just at his voice, instead, I settled on telling him how Twiggy was on the road and that Sundance had a shadow by the name of Sugar Jay. A girl who was around my age.
And then I fell silent as I let the timber of Crabby’s voice wash over me, closing my eyes as I drifted to the bayou, to our spot. Soon the sounds of the party began to fade away and Crabby’s body came to lie down beside me. His hand stroking my flesh and as his head came down towards me, he blocked the sun out and all that existed was him and me. The touch of his lips tingled against mine as the taste of mint sent my blood spinning to my ears. Soon the man was going to be mine, and there would be nothing to stop us.
When I awoke this morning, it had been just another day. A lonely day where I would have to put on a front for my family and friends, and now with Crabby’s call, it’ll be a birthday I’ll always remember. All my other birthdays forgotten. One call and Crabby had made my day special.
“I miss you Crabby. I hate that you’re so far away.”
“Hey, no sad thoughts birthday girl. I’ll be home soon and we’ll party the night away.”
Home soon. Out of all which Crabby and I have spoken about, it was the words ‘home soon’, which vibrated around my skull. For me, that day couldn’t come soon enough. As giddiness assailed through my body, I suppressed the smile, which was attempting to break free.
It was only as I opened my eyes that my glance fell on Inferno, who was watching me closely. His face clearly showing his displeasure. Silently I watched as he began to cross the lawn, leaving Baby Blu behind. I didn’t want this moment spoilt yet. As I jump to my feet, guilt must be showing on my face, because Inferno’s strides were coming quickly and only by fluke was he stopped in his progress as Trax came up beside him and spoke to him.
As I rose, I raised my chin, the strands of my hair brushing the back of my neck as I made eye contact with the biker. Inside I was shaking, my stomach lurching up and down, but I refused to let Inferno intimidate me. After all, Inferno couldn’t be too sure whom I was chatting with and as quickly as I had risen from my seat, I settled back down and returned my attention to Crabby.
Crabby’s voice was soothing and soon my body was humming and the boredom of earlier was gone.
“Thank you Crabby.”
“What for?”
“For ring me on my birthday, and making it perfect.”
Crabby’s chuckle causes my body to shiver some more, and unconsciously I rub my stomach. I didn’t care if my grin was practically splitting my face. All I cared about was Crabby and our time together.
“Emily.”
The frown, which spread over my forehead, soon dispelled my smile and I turned my glance to Inferno. His scowl drowning out the light and the sounds of the party disappeared. Now there were only Inferno, Crabby and myself.
“This is a private call Inferno.”
“And you have guests who you’re ignoring.”
To me, Crabby was my guest and he was here.
“So it’s alright to be rude to my caller, but not my guests.”
“I’m sure he’ll understand.”
I wanted to stamp my foot. Yesterday I would have. But not today. No one was going to spoil my day.
“I’ll finish my call Inferno, and then I’ll return to my guests.”
Although Inferno bobbed his head, he didn’t rejoin Baby Blu or any of the other guests. Instead, he sat on the bench beside me, his legs spread apart as he leant forward. In all intent, he looked as though he wasn’t interested in my call. Yet I knew better. I was fully aware he was listening to my conversation.
If inferno was going to give me a lecture, I may as well as give him something worthwhile. With what I hoped was a sexy, secretive grin, I returned my attention back to Crabby.
“Do you miss me Crabby?”
Yep, I was right, if the flinch Inferno gave was to go by, he was listening.
“Yes, Apple-Pie I miss you.”
The undertone laughter in Crabby’s voice was a giveaway to the fact he knew what game I was playing and I caught my breath in my throat at his next statement.
“Do your panties get wet for me Apple-Pie?”
With a squirm on the bench, I acknowledge to myself, that I was already wet just from talking to my bad boy.
I know to some, they see my feelings for Crabby as hero worship, because if it wasn’t for Crabby, I wouldn’t be alive today. Yes, I owe him my life. However, my feelings for Crabby had burgeoned long before then.
To begin with, I was embarrassed by my feelings, and I would hide. Crabby wasn’t the one to come looking for my company. I was the one who would search for him. When I came out of school, I would eagerly search the streets for signs of his bike. Late at night, when he’d bring Rayven home from the club, I’d run downstairs and pour myself a glass of water, listening to his voice as he said night to Rayven, while peering round the kitchen door to spy on them.
The cough beside me brought me back to the present and a reminder of Crabby’s question.
“All the time.”
Crabby’s chuckle has me curling my toes and I crave to reach out and touch him. Yet because Inferno wasn’t making any motion to go anywhere and as much as I didn’t want to bring the phone call to an end, I was fully aware that my time with Crabby was drawing to a close.
“I’ll write soon.”
“Enclose a picture Apple-Pie.”
Although my voice was tinged with sadness as I said bye to Crabby, there was a smile on my face and as I ended the call, I glared at Inferno. Soon, there would be nothing they could do to keep Crabby and me apart.
