“Son, one more thing,” Ivan said. “You’ll need this.” He handing Sergei a plane ticket. “Good luck”

Almost twenty hours later, Sergei was collecting his bags and grabbing a limousine to his hotel in downtown Houston. He knew Dani was a student at the local university, and Zoe had left their address and phone number if he ever wanted to make contact or visit. He hadn’t called ahead, feeling a surprise would be best, considering his plans. He settled into his hotel room and called the front desk.

“May I help you, sir?” a soft, feminine voice asked.

“Yes. What is the best jewelry shop in town?”

“That would be Damingo’s Jewelry, sir. They’re the finest jewelers around.”

“Thank you.”

Sergei grabbed his jacket and headed out the door. He didn’t have a clue what kind of ring to get Dani. This was new territory for him, but he knew it was important to pick something that spoke of his love for Dani and how much she meant to him, now and forever.

Slipping into the limo, he instructed the driver to take him to Damingo’s. Twenty minutes later, he arrived. The store was smaller than he imagined. The door dinged as he entered and an elderly gentleman approached.

“I’m looking for a ring. Something simple, yet beautiful,” Sergei said

“This way, sir.” the gentleman said. “Have a seat.”

Sergei sat in front of a large glass case as the man placed a black velvet square of material across the counter.

“What color of stone would you like, sir?”

“Not sure.” Sergei glanced around the case at the rings. There were so many, and then the perfect one caught his eye, a two-carat, heart-shaped, light yellow diamond mounted on a platinum halo band. It was absolutely gorgeous, just like the woman meant to wear it. He pointed. “That one, sir. The yellow heart-shaped diamond. It’s perfect.”

“Absolutely, sir. Shall I wrap that up for you?”

“Please.”

Sergie paid for his purchase, unable to wipe the grin from his face, not that he wanted to. For the first time in as far back as he could remember, he was truly happy. Nothing could rain on his day.

After stopping for flowers at a shop along the way to Dani and Zoe’s apartment, he wondered how to go about asking her to marry him. He pondered the different ways to go about it, but nothing seemed to fit. He decided to just wing it and be himself. After all, he was just being himself when they met.

As the limo pulled up outside the apartment complex, Sergei slid out, noticing he had attracted the attention of several people roaming about. Flowers in hand, he took a deep, cleansing breath and headed for the front door. In a matter of minutes, he would see Dani and everything he’d always wanted would fall into place.

“Zoe, can you get that?” Dani yelled from the kitchen as someone knocked on the door.

“Yeah, sure,” Zoe said. Dani heard the door open and then heard Zoe’s excited voice. “Oh my god! Dani, it’s for you.”

“What?” Dani said, rounding the corner into the living room. As soon as her eyes met his, they filled with tears. The last week had been one of the most difficult ever. If she wasn’t crying her eyes out, she was stuffing her face, trying to eat the blues away. Sergei was all she could think about.

Zoe had begged her to call him, even threatening a few times to call him herself. Dani knew she was in love with him. She was certain of that, but she didn’t want to be the other woman, and that was all she could be since Sergei had to marry Katya.

“Hello, Milaya moya,” Sergei said, crossing the room and pulling her into his arms. “I’ve missed you.” When his lips met hers, it was a kiss so earth-shattering she swooned. The warmth of his body seemed to heal all of her emotional wounds, filling her with a joyous happiness.

Sergei broke the kiss for a brief moment, sliding to his knee before her. Dani’s eyes widened. Sitting her classic red roses on the floor beside him, he pulled a black velvet box from his jacket pocket. A small whimper escaped Dani’s lips. She didn’t speak, couldn’t if she wanted to.

“Dani McCade, will you marry me?” Sergei said.

Dani could barely breathe, dreading the answer to the question that had to be asked. “What about Katya?”

“Things have changed. She is marrying my brother, Stepan. My heart belongs to you. I love you Dani.”

There was no way she could hold back the huge smile. “Yes! Oh Sergei I love you too.” she said, tears streaming down her cheeks. Sergei slid the ring on her finger and placed a kiss on her hand. She fell into his loving arms letting the scent of pure unadulterated male wash over her. “You saved me twice now it’s only fair I marry you.”

“I was wondering if you remembered me.”

“How could I forget. You’re my russian hero. What were you doing in U.S. back then?” Dani replied

“Family business. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”

“Finally!” Zoe shouted. “I was wondering if you two would ever come to your senses. Congrats, you guys.”

Sergei stood and wrapped his powerful arms around Dani, pulling her close. She looked up into his eyes as he smiled down at her, and his lips found hers. Dani and Sergei had finally found the peace they each desperately needed and yearned for in each other.
