That was another good thing about us--we

both really liked driving in cold cars.

“I mean, he’s done some fucked up shit. But this? This isn’t human. Sky, if I see him, he won’t see my fist coming before I fucking smash him across the face.” His grip tightened around the steering wheel, the Brazilian accent coloring his speech even more apparent now that his emotions were raised.

“What else has he done?” I wasn’t sure if I wanted to know, but I asked anyway.

“Just stories I heard from his old assistant. She trained me for a week and told me about how he’ll search the internet for hours just to find any bad photos of himself, which he would then go and report under a copyright violation.” He shook his head in disbelief. “He went so far as to finding someone’s home address and sending his old assistant to go and ‘convince’ the guy to take the photo off the internet. I thought it was just all rumors and bullshit at first, but fuck.” I saw his eyes narrow in anger, that heavy forehead falling forward.

Just then his phone buzzed, the call connecting automatically to his car’s bluetooth.

“Hello?” It was Sadie.

“Hey,” Alexander said, leaving the call broadcasting through the car.

“Have you talked to Blake? He was supposed to have lunch with me and Ms. Kline today. He didn’t tell me anything about not coming.” I could hear the clatter of plates and the chitchat of a brunch spot in the background, no doubt a young actor-waiter hybrid taking someone’s order of kale salad. “You know he wouldn’t miss this.”

We both looked at each other.

“You’re right, Sadie, he never would miss it without a serious excuse. I’m going to try to get in touch with him now and reach out to you if I hear any news.”

“Fine.” She hung up, the call clicking off instantly.

“That’s not good,” I said, looking out as we drove passed a park, a couple of kids flying a kite shaped like a train. The smoke trail blazing through the clear blue sky.

Nope. It wasn’t good at all.

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

“WHERE DO YOU THINK HE went?” I asked, throwing my purse down onto my couch as I clicked the deadbolt shut once again. Alexander walked past me, his tank-top smelling like fresh coconut laundry detergent.

“I’m not sure. He’s not answering any of my calls.” He walked over to my window and looked out. It made me nervous.

“Shit.” I had to lean on the wall. “The last thing I did was blackmail him. I told him to tell Sadie. I pinned a scared dog up against a corner.” I realized that I could be in some really big danger. Blake could either blast through my door and put an end to it all now or bide his time and strike later, when he really thought I would talk.

I looked into the mirror I had next to my entrance, my skin looking pale. I felt Kester curl up between my legs, his long tail vibrating, his mews trying to get me to pet him.

“Calm down. Once we get in touch with him, we’ll sit him down and talk to him.”

“He cancelled a lunch meeting with his wife and some super famous woman. He’s doing something now.” My hands instinctively came up to wrap around myself. It was beginning to feel so cold in my apartment.

As if the universe wanted to put a period right at the end of my statement, one loud knock punctuated the apartment. It was followed by three more, each one louder and colder than the last.

I looked to Alexander, my eyes open in fear. He put a hand out and motioned for me to step behind him as he reached over and unlocked the door.

“I need to talk to the both of you.”

It was Blake. He was standing there, looking more disheveled than ever. His hair wasn’t gelled like it always was and his facial hair was just growing more and more out of control. Even his eyes seemed duller, like they were dropped into puddles of mud and hastily washed off.

“You can talk to me.” Alexander stepped forward, pushing Blake further out into the hallway. If I weren't so scared, I would be very turned on.

I actually might have been a little turned on.

“No need for the aggression. I just want to talk.” He stood there, both men trying to exert as much power as they could over the other. I hoped that Alexander would let him in. I wanted to confront him. I needed to talk to him and I needed him to incriminate himself. It was the biggest reason I wanted Alexander to step down. If Blake were let in and allowed to talk, then he would dig himself into a hole deep enough to land him in prison on the other side of the world.

Thankfully, Alexander stepped aside and allowed Blake in. I stepped back, not realizing how much it would hurt to actually lay eyes on him. I clenched my fists and took a deep breath, feeling every single muscle in my body grow tense almost immediately.

“Hi, Sky.”

“Why?” I couldn’t control myself. “Why would you do it?”

“Sky.” Alexander appeared next to me, I shook him off. I needed to know.

Blake shook his head, confused. “Do what?”

“Don’t act for the cameras.” I practically spat at him now. “You were going to give me a miscarriage.”

I could tell the words flew threw him with the force of a bullet, like a machine gun tearing through the room and landing almost every shot. He thought no one would ever find out, that was clear in the way his face dropped.

Now he knew his game was up.

Now he had nothing to lose.

“You weren’t supposed to find out.” He crept close, emotion sliced away from his speech with the precision of a surgeon. “It was supposed to benefit the both of us.”

I felt the bile rise up in my throat. “You make me sick. How dare you. How dare you think that you can take that decision upon yourself. You deserve to be exposed for the dirty sewer rat you are.”

He glanced down at my hand and noticed my phone, held loosely. His pupils dilated to the sizes of quarters. I must have pressed a button, because the screen lit up, showing him just how deep he was in this.

“You’re recording this? You fucking bitch.”

“Ah, ah, ah. Quiet on set.” I couldn’t help it. I had to make a quick jab, the final fuck you. I stepped back just as he lunged forward, my heart racing as fast as my legs. I jumped back so fast that I tumbled over my feet, landing flat on my butt. I looked up and saw Alexander immediately spring into action, tackling Blake and landing a punch straight across the jaw.

Saliva mixed with thick blood flew out of Blake’s mouth and landed on the floor. I got up and realized that Blake kept trying to reach for something in his pocket. It was almost out too--”a syringe! He has a syringe in his pocket!”

Alexander, unaware of Blake’s hand before, redirected his attention and pinned Blake’s wrist back, bones creaking, threatening to snap.

“Fuck! Stop!” Blake pleaded, his wrist no doubt close to breaking.

“What is this?!” Alexander shook Blake’s hand, pushing harder, squeezing out a yell from Blake’s gritted teeth. But he stayed quiet. Whatever was in that syringe, he wasn’t going to tell us.

I had a feeling it wasn’t saline solution.

“Let go now, Alexander, and you’ll still have a chance of making a name for yourself in this city.” He was desperate now, clawing onto Alexander’s dreams and trying to persuade him over to his side. I didn’t know how much power Blake had, but he was definitely well-connected.

I looked to Alexander, his thumb twitching.

Oh no, no, no, no. Don’t fall for it.

“Fuck.” Alexander twisted the wrist. “You.”

In the midst of all the craziness, I had realized I never called the police. I rushed to grab my phone and dialed, wondering why I didn’t just have them on speed dial at this point. Blake, his eyes wild with desperation, tried kneeing upwards, landing a blow to Alexander’s side. I saw him grunt in pain, but his grip never loosened, his eyes deadlocked on Blake, like a predatory tiger finally pinning down its cowardly prey.

I took a deep breath, an unexpected tear rolling down my face. I wiped it away, not wanting to give anything away. I didn’t want Blake to see me crying. He needed to see me smiling the moment they locked those doors.

The ones with the bars.

It didn’t take long for the sirens to blare through the apartment, a forceful knock on my door quickly following. Opening the door revealed two officers with two others standing close behind. Three of them were men--stocky and buzzed cut, almost clones--and one was a woman--much leaner, tight bun, looked intense.

Blake didn’t struggle anymore, knowing his time was up. He didn’t speak either, immediately demanding to see his lawyer. The woman cop cuffed him and escorted him out, both of them surprised by bright flashes coming from the pool area. The other cops ran out only to realize that it was a bunch of paparazzi who snuck their way in, each one trying to get the perfect picture of the disgraced plastic surgeon.

I shot a glance at Alexander, the tiniest of smiles creeping up my face. He walked over to me as the remaining police let themselves out, walking straight towards a bright wall of white. They yelled in their cop voices--”Everyone leave the premises or get arrested!”--and most left, already getting the shot they came here for.

I leaned my head on Alexander, now standing next to me as we watched the crazy scene.

“What was that about?”

“I may or may not have tipped off TMZ.”

He laughed, kissing the top of my head.

I took another deep breath in, unable to believe that it was finally over. Blake was being dragged away to spend the night in a cell, next to a male prostitute named Steve--at least I hoped so--and pictures of his arrest would be everywhere, much more than what his old assistant could effectively “persuade."

I took another breath as Alexander drew me into him. That was something else that I couldn’t wrap my head around. The feelings I had for Alexander were astronomically powerful, and they came out of nowhere with the speed of a bullet train and the force of an enraged bull. We just clicked, each of our different fragments sliding together with ease, creating one beautiful mosaic of life and adventure.

We retreated back into my room, locking all the doors and melting away into each other, losing ourselves with the other, never wanting to find our way back home.

No, because home was right there, wherever Alexander was.

The moon was shining in through the cracks of my blinds, at the points where they barely touched. He stopped nibbling on my lip and looked at me, through me, his bright blue eyes still shining their light even in the darkness of my room. My fingers trailed his side, running over the rippling muscles, feeling his warm skin, the sheer power and passion under every cell.

I could see his lips pick up in a smile, my eyes already accustomed enough to the dark to make out Alexander’s fine features. The ones that made him so incredibly attractive.

“I can’t believe anything that’s happened.” He kissed me, quick and soft. “But you know what I can’t believe more than anything?”

I shook my head softly. “No.”

“That you’re real. I can’t believe I was lucky enough to find you, Sky.” He kissed me again, longer and softer.

This was it. I felt myself falling over the edge with him.

All I needed was a nudge.

Thanks for reading MONITORED! Hope you enjoyed Sky’s story as much as I enjoyed sharing it. The next installment of The White Coat series will follow Connor as he comes to terms with his sexuality while falling in love with someone who may be more of a poison than an antidote.
