Chapter One

April Johnstone put her car into park and stared at the unassuming building in front of her. It was getting dark, and the cold Colorado air was already filtering into the still vehicle. It seemed like it had been forever since her last spanking, when in reality it had only been four weeks.

She considered her dates with Tom. Once a month he reddened her bottom. He’d hinted several times lately that it was time for them to take things to the next level, where she would come in at least twice a month.

April didn’t think that would cut it, personally. She wanted to be spanked a few times a week. But she didn’t have the ready cash to avail herself of Tom’s services that often. Since she wasn’t a member, she had to pay a twenty-five dollar cover charge to get into Charlie’s.

When she’d complained about the high fee, Tom had said it was expensive to keep out the lookie-loos, the vanilla people who were just curious. What it did, she told him, was keep her from coming in too often. With the rise of e-readers, business at her used bookstore wasn’t quite what it used to be. She still paid her bills, but just barely.

Her monthly spanking was an extravagance that might have to go by the wayside if things didn’t pick up at the store. She still had her hardcore patrons, those who would never go electronic for their reading. And she had those who did both, too. But over the last year she’d lost quite a few customers, ones who had been big spenders who might come in once or twice every six months now. She was pretty sure that, before long, she wouldn’t see those customers anymore.

What would she do if the store closed? She hadn’t had a ‘real’ job in years, and she was close to forty now. Even though she didn’t consider that old, she knew that some employers did. They wanted to get workers in
their twenties, or early thirties.

She’d thought about changing the store hours, opening it on Tuesdays through Thursdays, and trying to find a part time job that could augment her income. It was something she still might have to consider.

But she didn’t need to be thinking about it right now. It was time for Tom to redden her ass, and she really needed it tonight. Being spanked would be the perfect way for her to forget all her troubles and just concentrate on the naughty feelings having Tom slap his hand on her ass produced in her.

She’d been coming to see Tom for almost six months now. When she’d complained to a friend that she missed being spanked, but she didn’t miss being controlled by her horrible ex, Misty had suggested that April come to Charlie’s, the most popular BDSM club in Denver.

April had been skeptical at first, but Misty had gotten her inside on a guest pass the first time around, and Tom, one of the owners, had taken an interest in April. She’d been nervous, but she’d allowed him to spank her. It had been a nice, steady one that had delivered just the right amount of pain, and had made April realize just how much she needed the sensations.

He’d asked if she was looking for a Dom. She’d told him no, that what she really liked was being spanked. She didn’t want a commitment, just someone who would slap his hand against her ass. When she got home, she would take care of her needs. It was easier that way.

Doing it like this meant she wouldn’t get hurt when the relationship ended; and they always ended. The last one was so bad, April decided she would never open herself up to a man again. She could use toys to bring herself to orgasm, but she couldn’t use them to spank herself, something she enjoyed immensely.

If only her former boyfriend hadn’t turned out to be such a… well, such an ass, she wouldn’t have to do this every month.

Stop thinking about the horrible ex, April told herself as she took the keys from the ignition. She got out of the car, locked it and headed for the entrance.

Even though Steve, the man who worked the door, knew her, he always checked her ID before he took her money. She supposed it was easier for him to tell people that he checked everyone, whether or not they were newcomers or those who visited on a regular basis.

He winked at her before he opened the door. April went inside and gave her purse to the young woman behind the counter.

“Is Tom here?” April asked the sub as she passed her bag over.

The woman just smiled. April took the expression as a yes, because seconds later the woman checked the book and told April she was scheduled for the Red Room. April loved the Red Room. It had a huge Victorian style sofa in it, with a comfy seat to kneel on, and wooden framework that gave her something to hold on to while Tom brought whatever implement he was using down on her ass.

She hoped it was the crop tonight. Tom wasn’t shy when it came to marking her bottom, and a good cropping lasted her for days.

After leaving the lobby, she crossed into the main room. She had to admit there was a twinge of jealousy when she saw women sitting with their Doms, dressed in skimpy clothing and wearing collars. They were all smiling.

At one time she’d been one of those woman, although she and the ex had never played in public. They’d done their thing in private… before they’d become bored with each other, and he’d started treating her like a doormat.

Maybe if they’d come out to scene once in a while, the romance and excitement wouldn’t have left their relationship, and she wouldn’t think of him as the horrible ex. To be fair, he thought of her in the same way.

She should have known from the start that they weren’t meant to be together. He was more interested in some of the harder aspects of BDSM that held no interest for April. When they’d decided to split, it had been somewhat of a relief.

April moved into the club, heading for the Red Room. She stopped in her tracks when a woman she’d never expected to see in Charlie’s came into view.

Virginia Midland, whose favorite reading material consisted of Regency romances and light mysteries, was sitting at a table, nursing a drink. She looked nervous, her gaze darting from side to side as her hand clutched the glass.

Virginia was in her late twenties, according to April’s estimate, a petite woman with long blonde hair and a big smile… at least most of the time. Right now she looked like a frightened puppy.

April started to pass her, intent on keeping her appointment with Tom. Maybe Virginia didn’t want someone to see her. But then again, maybe she needed someone to talk to. It sure seemed that way.

At the last minute, April decided to take the chance that her long-time patron would know that they were both in a BDSM club, and there was nothing to be embarrassed about. She approached the table slowly. “Virginia?”

The younger woman’s head snapped up, and her eyes widened in fear. When she recognized April, there seemed to be a moment of confusion, like she didn’t know if she should run, or stay put. Finally, she cleared her throat. “Hello, April. This is a surprise.”

“I can say the same thing.” April indicated the empty chair. She would sit for a few moments. Maybe if she were late, Tom would consider it punishment to spank her harder. She certainly hoped so.

“What are you doing here?” Virginia asked. Then, as if she’d reconsidered her question, she held up her hand. “Sorry, I shouldn’t have asked that.”

“It’s fine,” April answered. “I’m here to get spanked. It’s a guilty pleasure for me.”

Virginia’s eyes widened, and April grinned. “I never would have guessed,” the younger woman replied.

“It’s not like I wear a sign,” April said with a laugh. “Besides, I’m of the opinion that people’s personal lives are their business. To that effect, if I’ve invaded your privacy, I’m sorry. If you want me to leave and forget I ever saw you here, I will.”

“No,” Virginia said. “I’m waiting to meet a Dom. He and I are…
well, we’re just starting out. We met through a mutual friend, and decided to meet for the second time on neutral ground.”

“That’s a good plan,” April assured her. “I don’t want to ask too many questions, and get too personal, but I hope it works for you. Having a good Dom is a wonderful thing.” Or at least she thought it was. April hadn’t experienced that yet, truthfully.

“Yes, it is.” Virginia glanced around again.

“If I may, why are you so nervous if you’ve already met this guy? Or am I misreading you, and you’re actually excited?”

“Yes,” Virginia said hurriedly. “I’m excited.”

“I guess I would be too.” April started to stand. “I’ll get out of your way. I hope you enjoy yourself tonight. I’ll see you at the store sometime?”

“Definitely,” Virginia replied. “I have a sack of books that I need to bring in. Maybe I can do it sometime this week.”

“I have a few newer books that I think you’d enjoy,” April told her. “I’ll put them aside for you first thing in the morning.”

“I appreciate that.” Virginia smiled. “See you soon, April.”

April started back on her journey to the Red Room. She was a few minutes late, and she hoped Tom would take it out on her ass.

The thought made her laugh.

She stopped at the door to the Red Room and knocked. Tom’s deep voice told her to enter. When she was inside she shut the door. The Dom sat on the couch, a riding crop across his lap.

April shivered in anticipation.

“You’re late,” he chastised her. “I was informed when you arrived, and I made my way here, only to have to sit and wait on you. If anyone should be waiting in this situation, it should be you.”

“I’m sorry, I…” She held up a hand, her thumb pointed behind her. “I ran into—”

He interrupted her. “I don’t care to hear your excuses.”

“Forgive me, Sir.”

He stared at her for a moment, his expression unreadable. Finally, he said, “Corner.”

April took up the position that started a great many of their discipline sessions. She stood with her nose pressed into the cranny, her hands clasped behind her back.

Tom didn’t speak at first, for how long, April didn’t know. Finally, he ordered her to strip. April did so, folding her clothes neatly and putting them on a chair near the door. When she was naked, she went back to the corner.

“Hands on the wall,” he ordered. When she was in place, he commanded her to back up and bend over so her ass would be on display for him.

“I had really looked forward to spanking you,” he said after a few moments. “But now I’m considering making you go home without one, as punishment for making me wait.”

She hadn’t been that late, she wanted to protest. But she knew that would piss him off, so she kept her mouth shut.

“I know the cover charge is hard on you, but maybe being out the money will teach you a lesson.”

April grimaced. It was money she could ill afford to lose, but it had always been her choice to hold their monthly sessions at Charlie’s. Tom had offered to meet her at her house, or for her to come to his, but she’d always declined, saying that was too personal.

When she’d told Misty that, her friend had laughed. “Having him at your home is too personal, but letting him see you naked and reddening your ass isn’t? You freak me out.”

April had tried to explain herself, but Misty hadn’t understood. You could divorce yourself from the person spanking you, she’d said, think of it as just a physical thing that caused extreme pleasure. But the minute that person stepped into your house, you had a relationship with them.

“You have a relationship with the cable guy the minute he steps inside your house to fix your problem?” Misty had countered. April had not answered her.

Tom’s deep voice broke into her thoughts. “So tell me, April, should I spank you, or not?”

“Yes, please, Sir.”

“Tell me why I should.”

April wanted to turn and look at him, to try and explain, but she stayed in place, hoping that by following the rules she would get what she wanted tonight. If she had to go home without a sore ass, she was going to be very disappointed.

There was another long, drawn out silence before she said, “Please, Sir, I apologize for keeping you waiting. I made a mistake by talking to one of my customers downstairs. It won’t happen again; I promise.”

Finally, Tom said, “I’ll give you half of what I was planning. Then you will go home, and when you come back four weeks from now, you won’t keep me waiting, will you?”

“No, Sir.” She hoped he couldn’t hear the relief in her voice. If he thought that she was happy, he might decide to forgo the whole thing.

“You won’t get the crop tonight.”

April’s heart sank. She had been so looking forward to the feel of the leather-encased fiberglass.

“Twenty-five swats with my hand, and then you’ll leave. Get over here.”

April turned and hurried across the room, hoping he wouldn’t change his mind before she got there. He was sitting in the middle of the sofa. The discarded crop was at his feet, and she wanted to beg him to reconsider, to pick it up and punish her for being late by bringing it down on her ass repeatedly.

But if she did that, there was every chance he would decide not to spank her at all.

“Get a towel for my lap. I know how wet you get when you are spanked, and I don’t want a stain on my pants.”

As she did his bidding, she remembered the conversation they’d had about this before. Tom had as much trouble understanding her aversion to relationships as Misty did. She gave him the same answer she’d given her friend.
