Epilogue
Cara and Grant sat
sprawled out in the living with the Sunday
New
York Times
scattered everywhere. Their Sunday tradition was to enjoy an
early brunch and then spend an hour reading the paper before Cara’s matinée and,
if Sarah went on a play date, making love. Thanksgiving was less than two weeks
away and preparations had been started. Jane had invited Gary. Skip was coming,
and Cara was waiting to see if Grace could be there, too.
She wanted her
sister with her in New York, to meet Sarah, go shopping, and hang out. She
missed her “
Pookie
.” Cara’s cell phone rang.
Ah, it’s Gracie.
“Hi,
Pook
—” she stopped when she was met with uncontrollable
crying. “Grace? Gracie, what’s wrong? Talk to me.”
She heard her sister
take a couple of deep breaths, then silence.
“Please, darling,
what’s wrong?”
Silence.
“Gracie, listen.
Listen! You get on a plane and get out here right away, Grace Brewster.
Whatever it is, we’ll fix it.”
“You can’t, you
can’t…” Then her sister dissolved into tears and hung up the phone.
