Read Mayor for a New America Online
Authors: Thomas M. Menino
Â
Two weeks later, entering a school in Dorchester, I fell and broke my right leg. Three days after that, the bombs went off at the Marathon. Standing in the pulpit at the interfaith service, I recalled the scenes that moved a nation. What people saw, I said, was the generous spirit of the great city whose service was my life. “We love the brave ones who felt the blast and still raced to the smoke. With ringing in their ears, they answered the cries of those in need. . . . We love the fathers who took the shirts off their backs to stop the bleeding, the mothers and sisters who cared for the injured. . . . The neighbors and the business owners, the homeowners all across the city, [who] opened their doors and their hearts to the weary and the scared. They said, what's mine is yours. We'll get through this together. . . . We have never loved the people of the city . . . more. . . . Nothing can defeat the heart of this city. Nothing. Nothing will take us down because we take care of one another. Thank you.”
