“Algebra” is derived from the Arabic
al-jabr,
which means “transposition,” i.e., the transposition of subtracted terms to the other side of an equation. The term was used in the title of the book
Kitab al-Jabr wa-l-Muqabala
[The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing] by the Persian mathematician Muhammad al-Khwarizmi. The book is indebted to earlier works of Indian Hindu mathematicians and astronomers, such as
Brabmagupta
(598-668). As for “algorithm,” the word is derived from the name of the Persian mathematician Muhammad al-Khwarizmi, known in the West as Algoritmi (c.780—c.850).
