Prologue

Twenty years earlier

Pelican Pointe, California

H
e’d known for years that his journey would come to a bitter end. Somehow he knew. Happy endings were for somebody else. Not him. These days, it seemed everything about his life spiraled out of his control—his days tough to get through. Lately, it took everything he could muster to put one foot in front of the other.

Sitting here perched on the rocks under the Smuggler’s Bay pier, he felt better than he had that morning when he’d started out.

He stared out across the harbor, watched as the clouds overhead drifted in front of a
full moon. The shadows briefly put an end to the shimmering glow off the water. When it did pop back out again, glistening like a pearl, he turned to the woman he loved.
