“We don’t have to kill her,” the Director replied, with the patience of a teacher explaining a simple concept to a slow child. “We have the only tool we need to make her destroy herself.”

“Her soulmate,” Henry realized, and the Director nodded.

“We offer them a noose disguised as a pretty locket, and they put it around their necks so eagerly,” the Director mused aloud. “Cowden warned her about the dangers of having a soulmate, but did she listen? No, of course not. She’s a lovely fool, Henry, but she’s still a fool. She’ll fall into the trap just like the rest of them.” He paused, considering their options. “Make sure you give her back her gun, though. Let’s at least pretend she has a fighting chance.”

“With us against her, sir, it’s only a matter of time until she’s dead. And if we can fill the Slate with candidates who are loyal to you, then you’ll be in control.”

“I believe you’re right about that, Henry.” The Director smiled. “I believe you’re right.”
