The mayor held up a hand. ‘Thank you, thank you. The detective sergeant has also assured me that he will keep the council updated with any developments. Now I’ll ask our arts and entertainment officer, Debra Taylor, to give you an update on our one-hundred-and-fifty-year commemoration. Exciting times, people!’
I flinched, because the sudden change in tone seemed a little inappropriate. Then my attention was distracted by the police officers, who were moving steadily towards the back of the room. There was definitely something compelling about a man in uniform. Even the dour one looked reasonable from the rear.
‘Good evening, everybody,’ said Deb, as she adjusted the microphone noisily. ‘I am very sorry to follow such tragic and disturbing circumstances, but I am also pleased to share with you some of the events that will be taking place next weekend. The festivities will commence on Friday afternoon in Bendigo as a rider sets off to replicate the famous sunset ride. His arrival in Majic has been timed to coincide with sunset and an opening-ceremony picnic, which will take place outside Sheridan House. This will also herald the unveiling of our new statue. And from then on, there will be something for everyone!’ She beamed proudly as she held up a flyer. I recognised the sepia tones of Petar and Mate on the front cover. Deb lowered the flyer and read directly from it, announcing events like she was auditioning for the circus big-top. ‘Rides and sideshow activities on the oval! Arts and crafts here at the centre! Raffles and competitions all weekend! Majic Idol
and
Majic Masterchef! Stalls with local produce, demonstrations from local farmers, and nonstop entertainment all day Saturday
and
Sunday! Ladies and gentlemen, we are going to have a
wonderful
time.’ Deb smiled again and stepped back, then leant forward briefly. ‘Oh, nearly forgot. This flyer is available at the back of the room so please help yourselves. They contain a schedule of events as well as some discounts and coupons. Well worth grabbing one or two.’
The mayor stepped forward once more, leading the applause as Deb retreated to her position by the bereavement-card table. ‘And what a fine job you’re doing, Deb. Can I also throw in a quick thanks to Will Akermann, who has been
amazing
.’ He clapped again, turning to acknowledge Will, who flushed. ‘Now, finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to announce that we will be unveiling an annual award next weekend that will be named in memory of Sam Emerson.’ He paused for everybody to appreciate this munificence. ‘The details are yet to be worked out and any ideas are welcome. We’re thinking something to do with the history of our town, because that’s what Sam was passionate about. Perhaps the award will be for service rendered, or maybe even new discoveries. Something about Majic that we never knew! I believe the local high school is running a competition to that effect.’ He nodded towards someone in the front row and then continued. ‘We plan to announce the details, along with the inaugural winner, next weekend.’
Yen started to say something but I held up my hand, trying to think this through. To my mind it was further proof that the crime had been a murder/suicide, because otherwise the most likely suspect was James Sheridan the Mayor, who just ruled himself out by announcing a competition to draw out the very thing I had assumed he was trying to keep hidden. Or perhaps that was what he
wanted
us to think. Muddying up the waters with a dash of befuddlement. Brilliant.
Petra had twisted around and was raising an eyebrow again. I nodded, and then glanced over to the side towards Deb, who was in conversation with Will Akermann. She caught my eye and grinned. I knew that it had occurred to both my fellow investigators, just as it had to me, that if we did manage to reveal the Discovery, and it was as huge as Sam promised, then we stood an excellent chance of being the inaugural winners. Which was both incredibly apt and amazingly ironic. I liked to think Sam would have approved.

Dear Nell, Hope you enjoyed the meeting. What a surprise re the competition – I didn’t know the council were planning that. So let’s win it! Lew is making headway on the research. We have Petar’s death certificate but that doesn’t help much. Unmarried, no issue, date of death: 1/4/1867, cause of death: subdural haematoma following fall from horse on 29 March The only interesting part is that he died three days after the fall, and that the informant was James Sheridan, who is listed as his business partner. |

Forgot to tell you that I’m away this weekend. I’ve got an auction in Fitzroy tomorrow and then I’m staying with friends over that way until Monday. So I’ll miss the family dinner Sunday night! Sorry. |
Cheers, Petra PS Have you looked at those townhouses? PPS: Fascinating re Mate & Kata. But what does that mean? She couldn’t have come out here with him because he and Petar were working on that ship when they shot through and headed to the goldfields. So when did she emigrate? Why? PPPS: Did you realise my name is almost the same as Petar’s? Petra, Petar. Uncanny. Maybe I’m a long-lost descendant. |

Dear Nell, Delighted that you’re so pleased about becoming a hat person. However we can’t schedule a photo shoot until next month so I’m afraid you shall have to put up with being hat-less in the column for a few more weeks. Now I hear there has been some criminal activity up your way recently? Anything that would feed into a feature article??? |

Oh my god, you are so right! I am standing in front of the display boards right now and yes, the resemblance is strong . I wonder if this was the photo that Sam was referring to. And what does this mean?? She has three children in the photo, which suggests that she and James had offspring, but these are not mentioned anywhere. Perhaps they all died young. How awful. I’m heading home soon and I’ll ask Lew to look into it. Also I meant to say that I loved the hat you had on last night! Suave and stylish, with a dash of mystery. Think I’ll get one myself! |

Good morning Nell, I am just following up on the valuation I delivered last week on your house. I hope that you were pleased with the result and we look forward to listing your home should you decide to go down that path. You also mentioned that you were considering downsizing, in which case we have several suitable homes on our books that I would be happy to show you if interested. For starters, we are handling some beautiful townhouses on the new estate just two blocks from the centre of Majic (see www.fletchersestate.com.au). Please do not hesitate to contact me for any further details. |

Yes, of course I realise that you’re older, so you’d be the heir. But maybe I’m adopted? Hmm? |
Cheers, PPS Had a great buy this morning at the auction. Price low due to termite damage but totally repairable. Score! |

No, Mum, I’m fine. Must have been something I ate. Hey, what’s this thing on Sunday about? Your not going to make some grand announcement, are you? Like, your moving overseas, or your getting married, or you’ve recently realised your a woman trapped in a man’s body and must be true to yourself? Give me a hint! |

Sorry, Nell, but I still don’t have access to the database of Majic inhabitants, otherwise I’d have been happy for you to take a look. Even though it’s still not quite finished. Very frustrating! The police seem to think we can have the office back mid next week. Can I ask what you’re looking for? Maybe I can help? |

Yes, they were siblings. Mate’s death certificate shows Kata Dragovic (sister) as next of kin. We’ve also found the record of her marriage to James I – on 23 July 1867 (only six months after his first wife Mary Frost dies in childbirth and nearly four months after Petar dies). Sadly, Kata herself died in 1872 of typhoid fever, along with an infant son named George (born 1869). Her death certificate lists her as Kate Sheridan. Thank you for your query, Nell, and yes we do have several properties other than the estate townhouses. For example there is a lovely unit available in Sheridan Close, as well as two smaller period townhouses and a Californian bungalow not far from main street. I believe there are also two shops that have been rezoned to residential and are currently being renovated, both just off the main street, as well as a house further out in Small Dairy Lane, all of which are coming on the market fairly soon. I could make inquiries on your behalf if you like. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any further details. |

Yes, I agree. The little boy would have to be the motherless James Sheridan II, and it would be natural for him to be included with his stepmother and siblings. He looks about the same age as the little girl, and they both look about two years older than the baby George (would you say that George looks about twelve months old?). All of which mean she was most probably born around 1867, but if she was the first child of the union of Kata and James, then why no record of her birth??? Who is she? |
