. Following the publication of the first edition of this book, further information has come to light regarding the fate of the following POWs: William Slade, Laurence Kavanagh and Norman Cullity. They did in fact survive a firing squad rather than being killed by
their guards. They were to be executed for refusing to work for the Germans; however, the firing squad was poorly organised. Despite being shot twice and blinded, William Slade survived. Laurence Kavanagh was shot in the chest but survived whilst Norman Cullity escaped unwounded. William Slade returned home after the war and later married a nurse from St Dunstan’s, the home for blind military veterans. The couple later lived in Wisbech before William Slade returned to St Dunstan’s where he died in 2002 at the age of 81. The author is grateful to William Slade’s nephew, Steve Cawthorne, for this information and apologises for any hurt caused by his original error.
