“They’re ancient texts. History is something of a passion of mine and this language is one that’s only spoken by a handful of people in the world. I keep them for their mystery, and I feel that it’s important to maintain these threads of civilization. We’re only as important as what has come before, and we have to keep hold of that. Sometimes I feel strange because it seems that everyone else is looking forward all the time and they never want to enjoy the present, but I’ve always looked back and tried to learn from what has come before.”

“I think that’s wonderful,” she said.

He slammed the book shut, making her jump, and then he brushed away some of her hair with the outside of his fingers. His hands moved down the side of her neck, making her tingle. She drew in breath sharply and looked up at him with wide, wet eyes. He leaned down and plucked a soft kiss from her lips. A contented moan erupted from within him and he leaned in for a deeper kiss, pressing his lips against hers firmly.

His other hand moved around to her back and pulled her into him. His sweet breath rushed over her lips as her body arched back under the strength of his passion. She moved her head back and smiled as his fingers moved through her hair and tugged on it gently, and it was her turn to let soft moans slip through her full lips. His hand moved down and he linked his fingers in with hers.

“You really are remarkably beautiful,” he said, making Ana smile.

They leaned in for another kiss before he led her back to the sofa. They sat down and naturally fell into one another, and they spent a good amount of time snuggling and kissing softly. It felt so comfortable and natural to be together. Ana nuzzled into him and breathed in his strong, masculine scent. She rested a hand against his wide torso and felt the steady rhythm of his heart beating behind his ribcage. It made his whole torso tremble, and it sounded like a war drum being beaten. When she commented on it Glenn merely replied that he had good genes, but Ana had never met anyone so perfect, as though he had been sculpted, chiseled to perfection.

She leaned up and kissed him again, gripped by a fervent ardor. He almost seemed surprised, and Ana shifted her body so that her leg went over him and she was straddling him. His hand came around her ass and squeezed her ample butt firmly, murmuring approval as he did so. She leaned down so that her long hair covered his face and they drowned in each other’s scents.

A strong hand came up to hold the side of her face once more and pushed it back. He kissed down the nape of her neck, down her chest and buried himself in the valley that lay between her breasts. She gasped and smiled as his hot breath washed over her like God’s whisper in Eden, and her hands curled around the back of his head. He took more and more of her skin in his mouth and it seemed as though he wanted to suffocate himself on her breasts. She could feel his hard arousal pressing against her, and then he brought her head back down for a wild, passionate kiss.

It stunned her, and she was left reeling. She kissed him back, and in their passionate ardor they threatened to tear each other apart. They moaned, and gasped, and for Ana all the nervousness melted away. She couldn’t wait to spend the rest of the weekend with him. In fact, a weekend almost didn’t seem long enough. His hands moved down her body and pulled her into him and he kissed with such passion that she almost couldn’t believe it was actually happening. Then he leaned back, looking satisfied, and stroked her cheek.

“You are amazing,” he said, and she smiled again, although she was unsure why he had stopped kissing her.

She placed her hands upon his chest and ran them down his body, feeling the rippling abs of his stomach, before she leaned in again, but this time he turned his face away and pushed her off, rising from the sofa. She was left to sit in the warm place he had vacated, and wore a look of confusion. After fixing her hair she looked at him, praying that he would come and sit back down because she didn’t realize what was wrong with her. Glenn went and stood by the bookcase, looking at things that didn’t matter, when he should have been looking at her.

“It’s not that long until dinner now, and it’s a lovely day outside. Come with me, I’ll show you the park, it’s nice to stroll around.” With seemingly no other option Ana agreed, although she was feeling a little scorned. There was an awkward tension to them now as well. Glenn didn’t look at her as much as he usually did. Had he suddenly gone off her? Had this all been some terrible mistake?

A winding path snaked through the clipped green grass, and beyond this were all sorts of flora and fauna. The edges of the park were framed by rows of trees, giving the impression that it went on forever even though Ana knew that a city lay directly behind it. Bright, colorful flowers popped up everywhere and their rainbow of scents filled the air, overpowering her. She breathed deeply and took in all the sweet scents. Small ornaments also peppered the ground, and it was more like an extravagant garden than a park.

“I did make it available to my neighbors but they rarely come here, so often it’s just me that uses it,” he said, in a somewhat wistful voice. Ana noticed something about him that she hadn’t seen before.

“Are you lonely?” she asked. The blunt question took him by surprise, and he flinched a little. Silence hung between them as he thought of an answer, but Ana said no more, wanting to wait to see what he said.

“I suppose in a way I am. Most of my family is scattered around the world and in this big city I feel like I’m in a sanctuary.”

“And what about with love?”

She couldn’t tell, but she could almost have sworn that he was blushing.

“It’s not something that I have any great experience in, really. I suppose I’ve always had a certain picture in my mind of the woman I want to be with and it’s difficult to forget about that. Maybe it makes me picky, and I’ve probably been my own worst enemy, but there it is.”

“I wouldn’t have thought you’d have any trouble finding willing girls.”

“It’s not a matter of that, but I want someone who I can really trust. Most girls simply want me because I’m rich and successful, but those things aren’t really a part of who I am. I want someone to take the time to know me, to really understand me. I want to connect with someone on a deeper, more emotional level first,” he said.

“I really have never met any man like you.”

“I guess I am a rare breed,” he said sardonically. He brushed her fingers with his own and their hands slipped together easily.

“So do I get to know the picture you have in your mind?” she asked.

He smirked and squeezed her hand, and stopped walking. He stood over her, holding her close again. Ana felt her body tremble with anticipation and she pursed her full lips.

“It’s you, only you,” he said, and gave her a soft kiss on the forehead.

He then walked on and continued talking as though nothing had happened but Ana was still focused on what he had said. She looked up at him and leaned against his arm. It felt nice to have someone who was so open with his feelings, and perhaps it was a good thing that he wanted to wait. She sort of understood now why he kept stopping when things were getting heated, and she wanted to show him that she could be the woman he had in his mind. She strolled along through the park with him and simply listened to him speak. He had a strong, sonorous voice that commanded the air.

It was how she imagined Zeus must have sounded when he passed judgment on the mortal realm. Glenn told her all about his travels and his business, about his views on life and liberty and she could have fallen asleep to the rhythm of his voice. Eventually, however, the conversation lulled and they slipped into an easy silence, as if a blanket had been draped over them on a cold night. She felt intimately comfortable with him and felt like she could have told him anything.

Almost anything.

The phantom of Colton softly glowed in her mind, and threatened to ruin the perfect day she was sharing with Glenn. The park reminded her of the forest in which Colton had kissed her, and later sent passion whirling through her body. She gulped.

“Are you okay?” Glenn asked, looking down at her with caring eyes.

“I’m just a little cold,” she lied.

Glenn looked up at the sky and saw the sun was getting low, so he suggested they go back and start on dinner. They went back to the house and by the time they returned the sun was burning red, a spot of blood spreading over the clear blue sky.

“Is there anything I can help you with?” she asked, but Glenn shook his head.

“Why don’t you go out on the deck and open some wine. I’ll be out with the food in a minute, I did most of the preparation before you got here.”

She opened the wide patio doors and stepped out onto the deck, and gasped. It was a wide wooden deck with strips of electric mood lighting running around the base. It was a soft glow, and the colors changed across the spectrum at regular intervals. A larger lamp stood in the corner but it wasn’t turned on. Beside that was a barbecue, and she could almost hear the sizzling meat cooking, but then a strong smell came through from the kitchen and her stomach started to rumble.

She glanced back and looked at Glenn through the window. He was working hard, and she couldn’t believe that he was putting so much effort in just for her. It astounded her how humble he was, and she knew that her aunt had been wrong. He wasn’t just looking to use her for a good time, there’s no way that anyone would go to these lengths just for a fling. It made her feel special and she was unable to wipe the smile from her face, for she was entirely happy.

Chapter 13

In the middle of the deck stood a table with a white tablecloth over it. Shiny cutlery and plates were already placed out and Ana opened the wine, pouring the red liquid into the glasses. She stood by and looked out at the sun setting as she sipped on the drink. She felt cozy and excited, as if something special were about to happen and she was already looking forward to telling Angelica about it.

When Glenn brought out the meal her stomach growled and her eyes popped. He brought out a few dishes.

“Instead of making you one thing I thought I’d make you a few small bits and we can pick and choose,” he said.

“It all looks wonderful,” she replied, taking a seat and trying to decide where to begin.

The dishes were all different and colorful, and they all smelled so good. Each one tasted better than the last and the tastes and textures exploded in her mouth. Accompanied by the wine it was the perfect meal.

“It’s so nice to have company around here again,” Glenn said, smiling as he watched Ana enjoy his cooking, “and I’m so glad you like what I made for you.”

“This is incredible. You should be a professional.”

“Oh no, that would require far too much stress. I just like tinkering about in the kitchen now and then, trying a few things. I wouldn’t want to have to make things perfectly or under a deadline. It’s just a hobby for me.”

The wine flowed and the food seemed never-ending. They laughed and joked, and watched the sun set behind them. The glow of the sun got darker and darker until night took over, the moon and the sun moving in their eternal dance. Stars glowed against the inky black sky and it looked as though a thousand fireflies were dancing above, and yet as beautiful as the night sky was neither of them could take their eyes off each other. They gazed deeply into each other’s eyes and saw how much they sparkled. The wine intoxicated them but their company and the attraction they felt for one another intoxicated them even more. Glenn slid his hand across the table and started to play with Ana’s fingers. She smiled.

“I can’t remember the last time I was this happy,” she said.

“I feel exactly the same way. I know that we don’t know each other that well yet, and there’s plenty more to discover, but I’d just like you to know that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you since the wedding.” Ana’s heart leapt and she found her affection for him growing by the minute.

“I’ve been the same,” she said, although she omitted the fact that she hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Colton either.

She thought about telling him the truth then because her mind was swimming with alcohol and she’d always been taught to tell the truth but part of her stopped herself before she managed to ruin the blissful moment. Instead, she let her eyes sparkle as they stared at Glenn and she thought about what else the weekend promised. She’d only known him a short time but already she felt like she knew him better than anyone.

“What else do you have planned for me this weekend?” she asked, a playful smile dancing on her lips.

“Oh, you’ll have to wait and see. I like keeping some things a surprise. A magician can’t reveal all of his secrets.”

“You think you’re a magician?”

“There’s definitely magic in the air.”

They both smiled and giggled as the romance surrounded them. They were enraptured by each other and captured by the attraction and connection that was growing strong as each second ticked by. Glenn left for a moment as he cleared the plates and brought out the desserts. There weren’t as many dishes this time, it was mostly strawberries and cream.

While he was in the kitchen Ana leaned back in her chair and breathed deeply, trying to compose herself for she was getting carried away and she didn’t want to allow herself to get too far ahead. Glenn had been right earlier, there was much to discover about one another and she was feeling a dizzying rush. When he brought back the strawberries he sat closer to her and picked one up, holding it by the leaf. The big fruit looked juicy and as red as the sun had been earlier. She parted her lips and let him slide it in her mouth. She bit down and as her teeth pierced the skin sweet juice flowed out over her tongue.

She looked at him with wide eyes as he fed her the strawberry. Once she was done he threw the stalk away and wiped away the remnants of juice that stained her skin. His thumb ran over her lower lip and their eyes locked together, a strong, irresistible attraction sparking between them. Ana could feel it, and she knew Glenn could feel it too but it was just a question of whether he was going to allow himself to be swept away by its current.

To help things along Ana picked up a strawberry and fed it to him. When he was done and licked his lips he ended up kissing Ana’s fingers as well, and small tingles erupted over her body. They finished their glasses of wine and then Glenn stood up and held her hand. Ana was hoping he’d lead her to the bedroom but instead they stepped a few paces over to the side of the deck. The electric lights beneath them were changing from purple to blue to red to green, and so on, illuminating them in a range of colors. But it was to the sky where their eyes drifted.

The stars were glowing brightly and in them they held the wonders of the universe. A vast cosmos stretched out before them and yet Ana was solely focused on the man beside her.

“It’s funny, isn’t it, that out of all those stars up there, out of the infinity of the universe, somehow we found each other.”

“Do you believe in fate?” he asked.

“I don’t know. I like to think we have more control over our destiny than just letting the universe take us along.”

“I think that the universe places us in certain situations and introduces us to certain people, but what we do after that is up to us. I remember when I first saw you. I knew I had to speak to you. You were the most beautiful woman in that room, just don’t tell the bride I said that.” They laughed softly, but it was a laugh fraught with unbridled tension. The attraction was strong and they could almost hear each other’s powerful hearts echoing in the stillness of the night.

“The weekend was very special to me too. It feels like a lot is happening in my life. It’s almost scary in a way.”

“Have you thought any more about moving to Newtown?”

Ana nodded. “My best friend is going to come with me. I’m going to try and get it sorted while I’m up here. Since we’re going to be living together I’m going to have a bigger place than I initially thought so I figure I might get a place where I can actually have some stock so people can come and look at things in person, and even buy things directly from me. Angelica will be at work so it shouldn’t be a problem. Hopefully it’ll happen in the next few weeks. I’ve been languishing in Trinity Falls for too long now. It feels like it’s time for me to start the next chapter of my life, I’m ready to push my boundaries and grow, and just see what happens.”

“That’s great, and if you need any help with setting things up don’t hesitate to ask.”

“I can’t ask you to do that, you’ve got far more important things to worry about than me.”

“What are friends for?”

“So we’re just friends?” she asked, a teasing smile dancing across her lips. His lips pursed and he leaned down to kiss her. She could taste the alcohol on his breath as he gripped her tightly, and she leaned into him, letting soft moans escape her lips. When he released her she had to take a moment to recover.

“I don’t know about you, but I don’t usually kiss my friends like that,” he said, almost growling. She smiled once more, and she had been smiling so much that her jaw had almost started to ache. Glenn looked up at the sky again.

“Look at the moon, it’s so beautiful,” he said, and her eyes followed his gaze. She saw that the moon was almost full, and only a slit of darkness shaded one of the edges.

“I think that’s why you feel that a big change is coming. The full moon is tomorrow. It often means that something wonderful is going to happen. It’s been a fixture in many cultures over the years. The sun has often been worshipped and seen as a deity but I’ve always been more drawn to the moon. It almost seems like a secret, like when you look up at it it’s telling you something only you can hear. I’ve never seen it as less than the sun, only as an equal. After all, it’s up there for the same amount of time.”

He continued to wax lyrical about the moon, and he spoke with such reverence that even Ana was swept up in his awe. There was a raw edge to his voice as well, as though something seemed to be taking him over. She looked at him, and she recognized the passion in his voice as the same animalistic charisma as she had seen in Colton. She gulped, for she hated that she was reminded of Colton on that special night but she tried to tell herself that it was okay. She was with Glenn. She wanted to be with Glenn. And now that the passion she wanted had been revealed she was eager to feel him close to her. Her heart thumped in her chest as she took hold of his hand, and drew his attention away from the moon.

“Come to bed with me,” she said, her heart-shaped face having an ethereal beauty as the moon shone down upon them.

For a moment she thought he might resist again, but everything in her eyes pleaded with him not to. A smile tugged the corners of his lips and he moved away. Ana’s heart leapt for joy as they walked back through the house and up the stairs. Tension rose within her as the moment of passion grew closer. She breathed more rapidly as they walked into his room, and as soon as they passed over the threshold he turned her around and slammed her against the door. His hands were all over her and his body pressed against her curves. His eyes swam with passion and she knew that this was what she had been waiting for.

“I knew you had an animal within you,” she said, gasping as he kissed her neck.

“You have no idea,” he growled, and kissed her firmly on the lips, taking her hands in his and spreading them against the wall.

He moved down her body, biting her skin softly as he went, trying to move away her dress with his teeth. He pulled the straps, leaving her shoulders bare, and her breasts threatened to pour out but they remained covered ever so slightly, teasing him to such an extent that he got hard quickly, and she felt the bulging, thick erection pressing against her.

She gasped and twisted her neck as she was pinned against the wall as he used his strength to dominate her. He pushed her up and left kisses all over the top of her chest. Her hands twisted but he kept her pinned to the wall. He slid down, finally releasing her hands, and left kisses all over her clothed body. His hands ran down her curves and groped her, and her whole body felt alive.

She looked down at his head as he went down past her burning pussy, and he breathed in her scent deeply, murmuring loudly in satisfaction as he could taste her scent. His hand moved down her thighs and found skin under the skirt. Upon his touch she was excited and her mind exploded with pleasure. He ran his hands up slowly, teasing her with the tips of his fingers, and an intense feeling swam inside her.

Just as Ana thought Glenn was going to explore inside her as she hoped he would he rose up and kissed her again. She kissed back eagerly and ardently, driven by a dark, deep passion that had only been awakened recently. Her hair matted to her skin as sweat broke out over her body, for the surge of arousal was so intense that it sent her reeling.

Glenn was all over her, kissing and feeling and tasting her. Ana took his lower lip in her teeth and bit down, making him yelp, but it only drove him on to greater heights of pleasure. He kissed back so firmly that she thought her lips were going to bruise. His fingers dug into her skin, and she could feel his sharp nails against her. He was raw and wild, everything that she had been wanting, and she surrendered to him completely.

They tumbled down to the floor and landed on the thick carpet, writhing and kissing each other. Out of her blurred vision she could see the bed in the background but she knew they weren’t going to make it there. They rolled around on the comfortable floor, heat spreading through their bodies as their lips were locked in a frenzied passion. Their hands explored each other and tore at each other’s clothes.

His shirt was the first to go, and Ana ran her hands through his thick body hair. She moaned with pleasure as she felt his muscles beneath her fingertips, and when she reached his belt buckle she bit her lip and inclined her head. Glenn rose and reached around her back, looking deeply into her eyes as he slowly unzipped her dress and let it fall away around her. Underneath she was wearing lacy underwear, but it barely covered her voluptuous body and as his eyes took in her figure he was driven crazy with desire.
