Dust kicked up everywhere, blinding the drivers.

By the time Ty sped back into the race, Bobby’s car had landed upside down on the upper track. Smoke billowed from the engine compartment. Bobby pulled himself out just as fire licked around the hood and cabin. Ty offered a wave and sped away.

In the end, he didn’t win the race, but that was okay. Starting last in line and coming in third in his first race in two years was pretty damn good. His father would have been proud.

What mattered most was that he had Eileen. She was the best prize of all.

After the podium photos and more snapshots beside the car, he got a chance to join his team. All the guys patted him on the back.

Jonnie Lavoie grinned ear to ear. “You did good, son. I’m right proud o’ you.”

To hear the legendary racer say that brought tears to Ty’s eyes.

Once Jonnie let him go, Eileen flew into his arms. “You did great! Third is almost unheard of from a rookie.” She pushed up on tiptoes and whispered, “You’ll get your prize from me later.”

Jonnie cleared his throat and tapped his daughter on the shoulder. “You gotta pack your bags, LeeLee.”

She whirled around. “For what?”

Ty exchanged an amused glance with the old man. “You’re going on a vacation, and nothin’ you can say or do is gonna change my mind, young lady.”

“But where?” Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. “Do you have something to do with this?”

Ty couldn’t contain his smile. “Somebody heard you loved Jamaican cuisine.”

She gasped, her eyes huge. “You’re taking me to Jamaica? On a
real
vacation?” She screamed and jumped up and down, almost knocking him over in excitement.

He pulled her close and kissed her, ignoring the teasing grumbles from the team.

It seemed like a lifetime had passed since he had been happy. For however long Eileen wanted him, he was going to show her just how a
real
man cherished a woman.

He scooped her up and carried her to the parking lot and to the Camaro. “We need to get to your place fast, so I can claim my prize before the flight.” But when he tried to take her car keys, she snatched them out of reach.

“You want fast? I’ll show you fast.”

They got in the car, and she started the engine, revving the beast. She glanced over at him, a stunning smile lighting the gorgeous face he loved. Then she punched the car into first and squealed out of the parking lot, forcing Ty back in the seat.

Eileen Lavoie drove like a pro. He realized, he didn’t just get the girl, he also got one that knew how to work a stick just right.

Coming in third place was just fine. Having her made him feel like number one.

He was a lucky, lucky man.

~About the Author~

Shady Grace (formerly known as BL Bonita) makes Northern Ontario her home, where the bush is so thick you can't see two feet past the tree line. Perhaps the mystery of the woods was what initially sparked her need to write. She adores strong alpha males who fall for fiery, independent women, in settings with humorous dialogue and action-filled plots. Shady believes love and sex should be exciting and unforgettable. Being able to write about it is better than cheesecake.
