“Seth, love,” he
whispered, scooping him into a gentle embrace, wary of causing him any more
pain. The smell of blood was so thick he felt nauseated as he took a first-hand
look at the damage.

“Everything hurts,” Seth
muttered, but his speech was impaired by the slit in his cheek. Bruises were
surfacing on Seth’s chest, blood from his wounds smeared all over, but none of
the injuries were an immediate danger to Seth’s life.

“I wouldn’t have killed
him, Dom,” Vincente tried from where he was trapped. “I wouldn’t kill my
brother. I just wanted to teach him a lesson about loyalty.”

Domenico frowned at the
sorry face in the corner. Vincente was one of those men who’d pee themselves
out of pain, so he hoped Vincente had a beer or two before he came down to
taunt them. “You wouldn’t?” he asked, gently removing the tape from Seth.

Vincente shook his head.
“No. You know how our family can be cruel to each other, but we stick together
at the end of the day.” A nervous wheezing coming from his lips gave Dom a
surge of pleasure.

Seth slowly got off the
chair, but his whole body was trembling. “I need to lie down.”

Domenico leaned in and
pressed his lips against the mouth that felt more like tenderized meat than
anything else. Tasting blood, he gently held Seth and helped him up. “You can
lie here for now, and then we’ll patch you up,” he said, walking him over to
the sofa.

Seth looked up at him,
adjusting on the seat where Dom helped him to lie down. “I think my ribs are
broken,” he whispered and spat out blood that was still coming from the wound
on his cheek.

Domenico exhaled as he
looked down at the injuries. It would take some time before they reached the
doctor Domenico knew would be safe to approach. He’d wash Seth, bandage his
wounds, and stitch the cuts in his face and side, but it needed to wait until
he was done with Vincente. They couldn’t allow themselves to just leave him
alive in the basement. “I know, baby. Just give me ten minutes, okay?” he asked
as he put a pillow under Seth’s head.

Seth nodded and closed
his eyes, so trusting Dom couldn’t help but give him one more gentle kiss.

“I know a doctor in the
area. I could get you there,” Vincente tried.

Ah, that Vincente,
always trying to weasel his way out of responsibility. He wouldn’t get to this
time. Domenico smiled back as he approached him. He pulled out a handkerchief
from a pack standing on a low table by the sofa and wiped his face.

“Great. We can
definitely do that after you answer a few of my questions,” he said,
approaching Vincente.

“Okay…” Vincente watched
him, cornered between a bookshelf and the wall.

Domenico sighed and
pulled over the chair he’d been taped to minutes ago. He sat on it and leaned
over to look at Vincente. The bruise forming under his left eye was shrinking
his field of vision, but it would fade soon enough. And he didn’t need an
eagle’s sight to go through with anything he planned.

“If you wanted to spare
us, why did you send the two Chinese men after us in Berlin?”

The surprised look on
Vincente’s face wasn’t like his pathetic attempts at manipulation. “What? What
Chinese men?”

Domenico sat straight
and picked up a stray can of beer. He wasn’t a fan of the drink, but he was
thirsty enough to let it pass his lips. “They were hired by Mr. Tropico. That’s
the name on the card you gave me in the strip bar,” he said, looking at
Vincente’s ass under the denim pants. If he was so against fags, he’d get to
try an ass fuck. The blade the bastard used to cut Seth would be an appropriate
replacement for a dick.

Vincente swallowed.
“That card… Father left it to me before I flew to New York. He made a note that
I should have fun with it. Take my brothers out and all that.” He dared a
nervous smile.

Domenico shrugged, but his
heart sped up immediately. Why would Dino Villani bring Seth back only to make
an assassination attempt? Was this some twisted way to get rid of both Domenico
and Seth at once? Did he somehow find out Domenico wasn’t really related to
him? In any case, there was no way for Dom to ask those questions now that the
former Don was dead.

He sighed, looking into
the glimmer of hope in Vincente’s eyes. “Would you rather be fucked up the ass
or lose your dick?”

All blood drained from
Vincente’s face along with his smile. “Can’t we work this out differently?” he
uttered.

Domenico shook his head.
“We really just wanted to go and bathe in the sun for the rest of our lives,
but no. You just had to push it,” he muttered with a shake of his head.

Vincente rubbed his forehead.
“You’re free to go, really. I will never bother you again. I just thought we
could… Frederico said…” He had no idea what he was talking about, and it was a
pleasure to watch.

“What did he say?” Domenico
asked, opening his own shirt to check the damage. There were some bruises, but
he breathed freely. Not much harm done.

“He said I should bring
you both back. That you’d be an asset.”

Domenico chuckled. “Too
bad he didn’t show up himself. I would have loved to have a conversation with
him,” he said before gesturing at Vincente. “Pull down your pants.”

Vincente swallowed. “I’d
rather get fucked,” he whispered, but did as he was told, pale with terror.

“Okay. Me or Seth?” Domenico
asked casually, already looking over the newly visible skin. He’d cover it with
a pretty red crisscross pattern.

“S-Seth?” Vincente
deserved the sweat beading on his forehead. He didn’t have any mercy for Seth,
and he would have tortured him in front of Dom for hours.

Domenico pouted for
Vincente’s eyes. “Too bad I don’t want his dick anywhere near you. That
wouldn’t work,” he said when Vincente was already stripped from the waist down,
his cock shrunken from fear.

Vincente took that
humiliation without an outburst of violence. “Domenico, please… I just want to
live.”

“You won’t,” Domenico said,
leaning back for comfort. He was calm, but adrenaline was already pulsing
through his bloodstream. “You know what I was saying into that gag when I
watched you cut the man I love? That I will cut off your dick and make you deep
throat it until you choke. Then I’ll gag you with it and fuck you with this,”
he said, holding up the carving knife. “I hope you’ll still be able to feel
anything when I skin you, because I will only kill you after.”

Vincente’s pupils grew
wide, and he made a leap to the floor, pulling on the pipe so hard his wrist
crackled. His only hope was reaching the gun by Emilio’s side, but it was too
far for him.

Domenico sighed and got
up from the chair. He picked up the gun his almost-brother so desperately
wanted to reach and walked over to the unnamed Family man, who was still
wearing Seth’s headphones. “Don’t overexert yourself. I want you really alert.
Shame I don’t have any stimulants.”

“You motherfucker,”
Vincente yelled at him through a sob. The handcuff rattled against the pipe.

Seth was trembling on
the sofa, still bleeding, but the wounds were not deep enough to make him lose
too much. Their concern would be in the ribs and his hand that needed
attention. Domenico would organize the best medical care they could afford. For
now though, he wanted to give his love as much comfort as possible.

He ignored Vincente and
picked up the headphones along with the player. The music was still playing.

“Seth?” he asked, slowly
approaching the sofa with a small smile.

Seth didn’t open his
eyes, but murmured something to indicate he heard Dom.

“Wanna listen to some
music?”

“Yes,” he whispered, and
the hole in his cheek opened slightly to release a little blood. Vincente would
pay for it double.

Domenico put the
headphones on Seth’s head, and as Lana Del Rey lulled Seth to sleep, Domenico
brushed his lips across Seth’s forehead.

Chapter 21

Seth sat in a car,
wrapped up in a comforter to make his journey more manageable. Every move hurt
a different part of his body. But as he once told Dom, dying only made him feel
more alive. It wasn’t a pleasurable existence, but he was here. Breathing
slowly, getting ready to lick his wounds.

It was still dark, but
the faint purple glow of a rising sun was visible above the trees.

Domenico smelled of
shower when he’d come to wake up Seth. Dressed in a pair of jeans that were far
too tight on him and another baggy flannel shirt, he helped Seth up the stairs.
His touch was so very gentle that even with the pain sparking everywhere across
his body, Seth felt he was given the best care he could get.

Dom took him to the
bathroom where Seth was given a sponge bath. Domenico stitched the two cuts on
him and wrapped his whole chest with bandages before helping him dress in clean
clothes.

Seth got a glimpse of
Vincente’s mutilated body, but he didn’t want to look at it. It was all behind
them now. They’d made peace with Santo, and all should be different from now
on. Seth tried not to think about the poor elderly couple who were innocent
victims of Vincente’s cruelty, because no one could ever turn back time.

With Domenico completely
being his old self again, with his memories back, they would be able to reach
any of his contacts, travel to a safe place where they could get their health
in order before sorting out passports and crossing the border.

Domenico sat Seth in the
car on a bed of pillows and blankets, and started walking between their new
minivan and the house. He gathered food, bedding, some clothes, as well as
medicines, tools and other stuff they could potentially need on the way to a
new home, before driving Seth all the way to the road. They parted with another
kiss as Dom disappeared to plant explosives all over the house.

Seth didn’t take his
eyes off the path where Dom would appear, despite his neck hurting. He needed
to know Domenico was safe after all that they’d been through. Sometimes he
dreamed of living all alone with Dom on a Caribbean island. But for now, his
ambition was a lot more mundane. Get an X-ray. Get his hand to work. Fall asleep
safely. Basically, not die.

The sky was getting a
lovely shade of pink as Domenico approached along the driveway. He got into the
car and immediately leaned over, nuzzling Seth’s ear. “Comfortable?”

“Surviving,” Seth tried
to smile for Dom, but it only stretched the fresh stitches on his cheek.

Domenico tickled the
back of his neck and pulled away to start the car. “I suppose that’s good
enough for now. The doctor I know is about three hours drive away,” he said,
pulling into the empty road, which was now tinted the cool shade of pink.

“Thank you, Dom. For
everything.” Seth watched the house on the hill where their horror had ended.
Where Dom got his memory back. Where they almost died.

When Vincente had
started working on Seth with that fucking knife, Seth regretted not taking a
bullet from Dom back in the RV. Also because he knew how much agony his torture
must have caused Dom. But it was the choice they’d made, and Dom had done everything
he could in the situation he was put in. In the end it was something Domenico
did years ago that saved them both. Dom had since told him that it was also
where Santo got his scar when one of the Manettis tried to cut his throat.

Domenico smiled at him,
speeding up. “I promised I’d save you, didn’t I?” he asked and pushed the
button on a small device he was holding.

Seth expected the blast,
but in the rearview mirror it looked as if the house imploded into an infernal
ball. The fire mesmerized him, so he watched as the flames were followed by
clouds of smoke. Their ticket to freedom. A closed chapter.

“I knew you would.” Seth
groaned when a deeper breath made him want to cry from the pain of it. “You
always do.”

Domenico gently squeezed
Seth’s hand before taking their spare cell phone out of his bag. “We’re
completely free now.”

“Are you going to spoil
me rotten? Will I lie on the beach all day drinking mojitos?” Seth spat some
blood out into a cup he held for that purpose.

Domenico grinned at him,
his eyes bright as they reflected the morning light. “Maybe if you bake me some
cupcakes.”

“Anything for you.”
Seth’s heart beat faster as he turned his eyes toward Domenico, the man of his
life for better and for worse.

Domenico put the cell
phone they needed to cast away as soon as possible against his ear while Seth
looked at the trees they were passing by. The early morning was so peaceful, as
if the horrors of last night had just been a bad dream.

To his side, Domenico
chuckled. “Hi, Dana. Good job. You now have a target on your back. You said you
had medical skills?”

Seth leaned his head
back, trusting Domenico to drive softly. The red glow visible over the trees
behind them was brighter than the fading stars, but by the time the rescue
services arrived, he and Dom would be far away
.
