Chapter 1

1
. I heard this Abraham quote, “happy, healthy, dead,” in an Esther Hicks lecture many years ago, and it has stayed with me!

2
. HeLa cells used in scientific experiments are derived from one woman, Henrietta Lacks, who unknowingly made an incredible contribution to science in 1951 when a scientist took cells from a cancerous tumor that ultimately killed her. It was found that these cells could serve as stem cells from which new cells could be grown again and again without the original cells dying. Something was different about the cells in Ms. Lacks’s tumor that made them, in a sense, immortal—yet the “immortal” cells also killed her with cancer. Other research has connected telomerase, the enzyme that seems to repair telomeres, with cancer as well. There’s much research to be done in extending telomeres without causing cancer. One study shows that it’s possible to increase telomere length in mice, which leads to a reversal in the aging process. M.
