God on Sex: The Creator's Ideas About Love, Intimacy, and Marriage

BOOK: God on Sex: The Creator's Ideas About Love, Intimacy, and Marriage
9.01Mb size Format: txt, pdf, ePub

Does God care about the intimate lives of His creatures? Dr. Danny Akin believes that since God made sex possible, and even necessary, that it is, therefore, advisable to inquire about His perspective. Finding that perspective in the Song of Solomon and elsewhere scattered through the Scriptures, Dr. Akin brings to bear on the subject the mind of a fine scholar, the rhetorical excellence of an outstanding preacher, and the remarkable example of a great husband and father. This is the scripturally grounded, exciting, and spiritual book pastors and counselors need for families who desire that even their most intimate moments with each other will be an anthem of praise to our God.

Far too long the church has been silent on the subject of sex. Yet as my friend Danny Akin states in his Introduction, “Sex was God's idea.” So it's time we addressed sex for what it is—part of God's perfect creation and plan for husband and wife.
God on Sex
is an insightful look at God's design for love, sex, and intimacy within the marriage covenant. From the practical biblical principles set forth in this book, you'll discover the simple yet profound truth—God's way works … and it works beautifully!

If you are looking for a book jam-packed with practical insights about love, sex, and marriage, if you want clear biblical teaching brought into everyday life, and if you are ready to laugh hard, weep remorsefully, reflect deeply, and pledge to love in faithfulness and joy, you will find resources for all this and more in Daniel Akin's
God on Sex.
Akin offers an astonishing vision of biblical marriage from one of the most neglected books of the Bible. His personal transparency and choice anecdotes pepper the book. But most of all, his deep passion for true marital love and intimacy, lived out in a complementarian relationship that God designed marriage to be, shines through like a beacon into the fog of our confused culture. Christian husbands and wives alike will learn much, be challenged to apply much, and through this find their marriages renewed and enriched, to the greater glory of God.

Bruce A. Ware, President
Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood

Boldly unveiling truth from the Song of Songs,
God on Sex
provides a delightful, insightful journey towards deep marital intimacy. Drawing from real life experiences and incorporating thought-provoking questions and practical suggestions, this biblically based tool will provide encouragement for couples and church leaders desiring godly transformation of marriages.

Finally, the bold, insightful, mind-stretching principles so often shared in Dr. Danny Akin's seminars have been put into writing. Actually they were there all along, tucked away in the pages of the Bible, where you can find the mind of God on every pertinent subject. Gathering these truths together from the Song of Solomon, Dr. Akin gives us
God on Sex.
And none too soon for a generation that is desperately “looking for love in all the wrong places.” This is a book everyone who really cares about love and marriage will want to read.

First Southern Baptist Church
Del City, Oklahoma
Chairman, Southern Baptist Council on Family Life

Wow, what a book! Romance isn't just for the beginning of a relationship. It can last throughout married life. Dr. Akin explores our society's romantic ideals and how they can apply to your marriage, and he does it from the background of the Word of God. Exposition like this and the accompanying humor and up-to-date surveys allow Akin to balance romance with realism. It also provides answers to help you find new romantic potential in your relationship. He explores the real meaning of love and simply tells us that love is a feeling you feel when you feel that you're going to get a feeling that you never felt before. We commend this book to every married couple as a biblical primer for romance.

Introduction

God's Manual for Sex, Love,
Intimacy, and Marriage

Sex was God's idea. Yes, I know it is hard to believe, but God is the one who came up with this fantastic idea, and I believe He was having a really good day when He did! Sex was God's idea, and He gave it to us as a wonderful gift for our
pleasure
and
procreation.
God is pro-sex. He believes in it. He is for it. A study of the Song of Solomon (or Song of Songs) makes this abundantly clear.

Marriage was also God's idea. I believe He was also having a really good day when He gave this gift to us. This gift is intended for
partnership
and
protection.
When sex and marriage are experienced and enjoyed together as God intended, the joys and blessings that are ours are seldom, if ever, surpassed in this life.

So what's the problem? Why is it that so many—too many— marriages end in divorce? Why is it that more and more persons are dissatisfied with their sex life both inside and outside of marriage? I believe the answer is simple: we have forgotten or ignored what God has to say about sex, love, intimacy, and marriage. We have failed to read and heed the Master's Manual for Marriage, and the price many have paid has been high indeed. It can be different if we will do things God's way.

God is so interested in and committed to the intimate, romantic, and sexual aspects of marriage that He gave us an entire book of the Bible dedicated to the subject. It is called the Song of Songs or the Song of Solomon.

When my wife Charlotte and I lived in Wake Forest, North Carolina, we were invited to participate in the Newlywed Game at a Valentine's banquet. Actually, all of the couples participating this particular evening had been married for some time. We had been married about fifteen years ourselves. I am delighted to tell you that we won the evening's event by an overwhelming margin. Two questions in particular were decisive in our victory.
