He picked up her hands and knelt down beside her. “We need to have a talk if you’re up to it.”
Her eyes filled with more tears. “I’m up to it.”
He let go of one her hands and caressed her cheek. “I was terrified at the thought of never seeing you again. That’s when I realized it.”
Her heart thumped. Her mouth was dry, but she found her voice. “Realized what?”
“That I don’t want to date you.”
She’d been ready to declare her love to him. That she wanted to try another relationship. But friendship it would be, and that would be more than enough. It was more than a lot of people had. She bit her lip, but she nodded. “I understand. That’s not a—”
“I don’t want to date you because I want to marry you. I want to make a commitment to you in front of God and our family and friends. I love you.” He leaned in and kissed her hand. “I want us to have a life together for as long as we both live.”
Her heart blossomed with love. “Now and forever.” She touched his stubbly cheek. “I guess that’s a lot better than dating anyway.”
“Oh, don’t worry. I plan to do a lot of wooing before the wedding, and then every day after that.”
“Really? Wooing, huh? Isn’t that a bit old-fashioned?”
“It sure is. And I just happen to be an old-fashioned kind of guy. Is that all right with you?”
“More than all right.”
He leaned towards her. “Think I can give my betrothed a kiss before the wedding?”
Maven smiled and leaned closer. “I think that would be a good idea. A wonderful idea, in fact.”
Their lips met.
And the spark of love ignited.
