The car bounces as he runs over a grass embankment and twists the wheel sending them back onto the street towards I-25. Valentine sits in the passenger seat eyes wide. They fly down York. Daniel checks the mirror and sees watches the horde of dead dissipate into the distance.
He lets out a pent up breath he didn’t even know he was holding. The road is partially blocked as they cross onto I-25. They have to drive on the shoulder for a while until they finally put enough distance from the city and the traffic thins into nothing. Daniel drives in silence for a while. After a few long moments he reaches out his hand and sets it on Valentines lap.
She flinches and he pulls away but she quickly reaches for his hand again and squeezes it before she sets it back on her leg.
They watch in the rearview mirror as Denver fades into the distance.
Finally free, he thinks.
