A WALK IN THE PARK

Max Vos

“That's the last box, Mr. Burke,” the hunky mover said, setting a box on the floor.

“Thanks, Tim. You and your guys have been a great help.” Burke could smell the sweaty man's scent wafting up, causing Burke's balls to draw up slightly.

“You're welcome, Mr. Burke.” Tim shook Burke's hand one last time, leaving the apartment stacked with boxes, all in disarray.

Burke turned and sighed. “How 'bout a quick walk before we start unpacking, Sparky?” The Jack Russell terrier jumped and barked once, his stub of a tail wagging frantically. “Thought you might be up for that,” Burke smiled, getting Sparky's leash out. “We'll try out that dog park. Whaddya say?”

Sparky pulled at the leash as they walked, stopping to sniff the shrubs here and there, obviously excited over exploring the new territory. Just as the two rounded the corner of the apartment building, Burke spotted a guy with an English bulldog puppy on a leash, also heading toward the dog park.

“Maybe you'll have a new playmate there, Spark.” Burke spoke softly to his pet, who was tugging at his leash impatiently.

As Burke and Sparky opened the gate to the dog park, the English bulldog puppy rushed toward them, ready to play.

“Daisy, get back here,” the owner of the puppy called, to no avail, rushing after his pup. Burke kept Sparky on his leash until he knew for sure that the two dogs would get along. When Daisy reached Sparky, they sniffed each other, both stubby tails wagging a mile a minute.

“Hey, sorry about that,” Daisy's owner apologized. “She's still a puppy and doesn't mind very well yet.”

“Hey, no problem,” Burke said, staring into the topaz eyes of Daisy's owner. “I know how that is. I'm Burke; and this bundle of energy is Sparky.” The terrier looked back as he heard his name, but immediately turned back to his new playmate, ignoring the human element.

“Hey, nice to meet you,” Daisy's owner said as he stuck out a big fur-covered hand. “I'm Hank; Hank Staunton.”
