Alex took the box from her hands, placing it on the counter slowly, only to have Nikki pick it up again.

“From your scent I would say we’ll be able to conceive tonight or tomorrow.” Alex turned and looked at her calmly, reaching up to touch her cheek lightly. “How do you feel about that?”

“You don’t know that it will happen that quickly, Alex,” she said quietly. “I was with my ex for a long time, and I never got pregnant.”

When she turned to put away the small plastic basin of water, she found her hand stayed by the tight grip of the woman. Placing the basin on the adjustable tray beside the bed, she turned to face the woman and smiled warmly at her, determined to soothe her.

“He doesn’t know I’m here, does he?” she whispered, fear in her voice and absolute terror in her eyes.

“Who, honey?” Nikki whispered as she sat on the bed at the woman’s hip, smoothing the clean white sheets and tucking them gently beneath the injured woman’s arm.

“Where am I?” The woman’s wild eyes searched the room in a panic.

“You’re at Denver Memorial Hospital,” Nikki told her calmly, reaching out and holding the woman’s hand gently between her own. “What’s your name?”

“Abbey,” she whispered softly. “But you can’t tell anyone I’m here.”

Nikki nodded and reached out to pet her long dark-brown hair gently. “I won’t tell anyone, Abbey,” she promised, gently placing the curling end of the woman’s hair against the pillow beneath her head.
