In June of 2008, my husband and I took a cruise through the Alaska passage. I was in awe of the beautiful landscape, the small coastal towns and the friendly locals who greeted us in every port. From this journey, an idea took shape in my mind. Ketchikan was just the setting for Mark Moretti. As the youngest of the brothers, and the one who walked on the wilder side in life, the town would be perfect for him to find love.
It's a bit daunting to write about a real location and take some creative license with it. While Ketchikan is laid out exactly as I've described, I've taken liberties with some of the facts. The marina where the Blue Note is located wouldn't have adequate dockage for floatplanes. And believe it or not, there is no ice rink so Rink Time had to be invented. The fishing locations for Mark and Jeff are fabricated, as is the Chop Suey restaurant.
None of my characters are real, and Jewels of the Nile is a fictional jewelry store. However, the fact is that cruise-ship-owned jewelry stores comprise a very large part of the downtown businesses. Burger Queen is exactly as I described and indeed on Tongass Highway. It serves one of the best cheeseburgers I've ever eaten.
Although no one would know it but me, the daily
weather that occurs in the book is exactly how it was on the days my story takes place. But Terran's hockey practice schedule has been embellished to suit my plot.
Lastly, I want to thank Charlotte Glover of the Ketchikan Library for answering my questions in such a timely manner. Thank you so much for the tour of the city and your wonderful hospitality. Any mistakes made in the descriptions or accuracies of Ketchikan life are purely my own.
