“You may not die but you won’t be leaving here. Not today.”

“I had such high hopes for you. But I see now that you would have never made a good queen.”

He threw a bolt her way with a smile that said goodbye.

“I’m not that easy, Mutufa.” Her shadow grew pushing out around her deflecting the bolt that came for her.

He turned to face Syn, but already her shadow was crawling over his body protecting him. The dragon’s body disappeared and Syn lie there breathing. Slowly he pushed himself up and stumbled towards Alexa.

“I’m not so easy to beat either, Mutufa. Maybe I am ultimate good to your ultimate evil. Now,” Syn’s vice rang out.

They began to chant again in perfect unity. This time the words came from Syn to her. She didn’t understand them but she could say them.

“No! I will not be locked up again, I demand my freedom.”

They threw a lightning bolt at him; together her red combined with the blue he threw blasted Mutufa in the chest. Behind him appeared a gate with chains reaching out towards him.

“I will never go back!”

They stepped closer to him and threw bolt after bolt, rocking him. He threw one back that sizzled on their combined shield. Alexa’s eyes went totally white as she continued to step forward, taking Syn with her.

“You would have destroyed everything I care about.” Again, she threw a bolt at him using her eyes to intensify and direct it.

Mutufa raised his hands and produced a black ball of power. The feral look in his eyes almost stopped them. Alexa reached out and took Syn’s hand. She raised her free hand and in it appeared a pure white ball of power. She threw it at the black ball that was coming their way.

It writhed and changed until it became a dragon and swallowed the black ball whole. Mutufa screamed. As he stumbled backwards, the chains wrapped around him and pulled him behind the gate that closed with a loud groan.

Alexa bent over placing her hands on her knees. “Is he gone?”

“For now, but not for good.”

“But…”

“My mate, it took me and all of my brothers at the height of our powers to banish him. There is no way just you and I can do it. But he is gone for now, it is all we can ask. Maybe we won’t see him again for a thousand years.”

She gave him a smile but the shadow that escaped crossed her mind. They would see him again soon. As long as he had help on the outside, he would find a way. Turning her attention to Syn, they slowly made for the door and with a sigh they shut it. Tonight they would sleep without the shadow of Mutufa over them. Tomorrow she would tell him about the shadow that got away.

Chapter Thirty

The bridge in the water was gone. Not collapsed simply gone; that meant they would have to swim for it. With Syn dragging on her, Alexa did her best to push towards the surface. The arm that went around her made her fight as someone pulled Syn away from her.

Her power lit up the water to show Mace pulling her toward the surface. Zeno had Syn and was doing the same thing. She drooped for a minute before she added her own strength to the effort. They were being saved.

Mace hauled her out and laid her on the riverbank. Zeno laid Syn next to her. Her hand slid into his. They made it. Around them was a crowd of people who cheered as they sat up.

“Our people,” Syn said looking around.

Alexa smiled, she was accepted. It wasn’t something she even realized she wanted, but now sitting here, soaking wet, having fought Mutufa and won, it was what she desired, to be accepted by these people, for them to truly be her people.

Her mother’s arms went around her. “You did it, Baby.”

Before Alexa could open her mouth, her mother was hugging Syn. “You did it. You both did it. You saved not only this world but the whole world.”

“For now,” Syn said wearily.

“That’s how the world works, son, one day at a time,” her father said in a deep voice.

Her mother leaned over and kissed Syn on the cheek. “Welcome to the family,” she whispered in his ear.

*~*~*~*

Syn watched Alexa as she sat at the dressing table and combed her hair. He should have hated this. Her parents had now moved in. They had a whole fifth floor to themselves and there was no need to see them unless they crossed at dinner time. But since her mother had started making all the meals they saw them a lot.

The more he came in touch with them the better he liked them. She had been the witch that used to aggravate him but he had to thank her because of her spurring him on he eventually found Alexa. His family and friends were always around, most likely because meals were now served at a regular time and they were always invited.

“Don’t look at me that way or we will be missing breakfast.”

“Do you think your folks will come looking for us?”

Her cheeks flashed a fiery red and she shook her head. “No, after I unexpectedly walked in on them, my mother and I came up with a new rule. No searching for the other unless we honestly thought there was a problem. Since the only problem we have is that I can’t keep my hands off of you, I think we’re safe.”

She stood, her hair flowing softly around her face, and dropped her nightgown as she moved to his side. She was his heart, everything that was right with the world he lived in. Picking her up, he moved her to the bed and placed her against it.

Crawling over her, he reached down to kiss her lips that were open in anticipation.

“I love you,” he said through kisses and tugging at her bottom lip.

“I know, and I love you, too.” She placed a bite on his shoulder that made him shiver with anticipation.

His eyes lit up as he looked at her.

“What are you thinking?” She smiled at him unable to keep her joy out of her voice.

“Nothing.” He slid down and took one hard nipple in his mouth and sucked gently, eliciting a moan from her lips. Then he bit her peak before sucking on it harder.

Her moans turned to deep sounds of need as she thrust her hips up against him. He took the peak in his mouth as his fingers played with the first one. He slid further down spreading kisses over her body as her hands threaded through his hair.

He stopped to kiss her belly, spreading small bites over her meant to sting and increase her passion. Her breath hitched in her throat making his cock twitch.

“Take me, Love,” she thrust her hips up again to entice him.

He took a deep breath and could smell her honey seeping out. He licked his lips and bent down to stroke her clit with his tongue. Her hips shot up as a groan left her. He sucked it in his mouth enjoying the feel.

Taking his tongue, he licked at her slit feeling her pleasure in his mind. Her desire for him poured into his thoughts as she talked dirty to him driving him wilder.

He stiffened his tongue and slid it into her slick pussy pulling a hissed “yes” from her. The taste of her burst over his tongue making him dive deeper into her. Pulling out he replaced his tongue with a finger and watched with wide eyes as she rode it before he slid a second one into her.

“Syn,” her voice dragged out on pleasure as it reached into his mind. “I love the way you touch me.”

He curled his fingers inside of her touching that spot that made her jump.

“The way you respond to me makes me so hot.” His voice came out rough and deep.

He could feel the shivers in her body. Lowering his head, he sucked her clit into his mouth and her body fired. Her pussy clenched around his fingers before it went into spasms.

He groaned deep as he rubbed against her leg. Rising over her, he placed the tip of his cock at her entrance and dove deep within her.

“I’m never letting you go, Love.” Stroking deeply within her, he let off the sound of the dragon as his eyes changed.

In that moment, he and his dragon both made love to their mate bonded.

*~*~*~*

Nadia crouched in the kitchen; she was being stalked. This was where she would forfeit her life for going against the instruction of the enemy. Alexa was her best friend she reminded herself, she wouldn’t betray her.

“I know you’re in here.”

Of course you know I’m in here you bastard, you’ve been stalking me.
But she couldn’t say that. Honestly, breathing was a risk but with somethings you didn’t have a choice.

She was tucked in a space under one of the counters that she always thought would make a good place for hiding things, she never intended it to hide herself. The surprise was that she was flexible enough to get into the space.

She could hear the door to her walk-in freezer open. Then a crash as something fell on the floor and broke. She stuck a fist in her mouth and refused to flinch. He, it, whatever it was had broken something she probably couldn’t afford to replace. Her business was on the edge of being a big success or another has been and she couldn’t risk one stupid move.

Now the black shadow was back to firmly push her into the has been column.

“You want to hide? Then die with your shop.”

She heard something hit the floors and counter that sounded like water. Then a match was struck and she realized the water was cooking oil.

The first scent of smoke let her know this really was the day she would die.

Back Matter

I loved writing this book. I have always loved reading about dragons and writing about one was a joy. Syn was a shock in the way he was such a gentleman wanting whatever was best for Alexa even if that meant not being in her life. Then there was Alexa who wanted to reach out and embrace it all but her past was hindering her. Watching how she overcame it and how they got together was so much fun.
