The band came trampling down the stairs, shaking hands with Piper’s people. Derek zeroed in on Flow Records’ A&R guy, and Cooper and Ben talked animatedly to the others. Pete, as usual, got waylaid by a pack of groupies.

A current flashed down Emmie’s spine, making the hairs on her arm stand up.
Slater
. He came up behind her. A hand cupped her hip, and Slater’s mouth nestled near her ear. “Let’s go.”

She felt flushed, feverish. It took a moment to compose herself. “We can’t.” She cleared her throat. “You have to work.”

“Work later. Home now.”

“That’s Piper Lee,” she said as quietly as she could, trying not to move her lips much in case the woman could read them. The woman stared openly at Slater, obviously wondering what Emmie meant to him. So, Emmie stepped away and approached her. “So, did you like the set?”

“Loved it.” Piper reached out for Slater’s arm, wrapping a hand around his biceps like they’d been together for years. She turned to Emmie. “Can you order us some shots?”

Was this chick for real? Before Emmie could respond, Slater motioned for the waitress, the one who’d hovered around him since he’d shown up at the table. She’d ignored the other band members and just stood there waiting for the lead singer to pay attention to her. How many cocktail napkins with phone numbers scribbled on them would wind up in his pocket tonight?

The waitress smiled at him eagerly, and he made a circular motion to include the whole table. “Shots, please. Don Eduardo Silver.”

“You bet.”

Piper smacked him on the arm. “All right.” She looked super pleased.

That smile could launch a thousand hard-ons for sure.

But Slater wasn’t looking at Piper. His hand stroked lower, hovering at the top of Emmie’s ass, his fingers teasing her through the thin cotton dress. He edged away from Piper, his body forcing Emmie to move with him.

“What are you doing?” she whispered harshly.

“I’m taking you home.”

“You have Piper Lee right here.”

“So?”

“So? That’s your ticket to a national tour. You know, with the big buses? The exposure? The
record company
?”

“Emmie, if you don’t come with me right now, your brother—and everyone in this club—is going to find out we’re together. Do you know why? Because my tongue is going to curl around your sexy little earlobe. And my hands? They’re going to rip that pretty dress off you so that I can hold those fucking spectacular breasts up to my mouth and suck them. And I’m pretty sure you know where that’s going to lead. I’m going to be on my knees, my face between your legs—”

“God, Slater. Stop.” Beads of perspiration popped out at her hairline. Her scalp burned. “You can wait an hour.”

“No, I can’t.”

“You make no sense. This is your dream, right? This is what you want more than anything?”

He looked at her challengingly. “I think I’ve just told you what I want more than anything.”

“Why are you doing this?”
You have Piper Lee right here
.

“Because I want you, and I’m going to have you right now.”

“Are you serious? You’d blow your chance with Piper just to get me naked?”

“I’ll have both. But you come first.”

Emmie smiled. Piper and her people had already seen Slater perform. Derek would take it from here, make sure the band opened for Piper. “Some big, bad rocker you are. I’m not even sure I’m attracted to you anymore.” She felt for his hand, giving it a squeeze. “One hour, okay?”

He growled. “Fifteen minutes.”

“Thirty. Nonnegotiable.”

“You’re so fucking hot.”

Every time his girl laughed, she’d lean forward, and that soft, silky hair would brush over his arm. The heat of her body so close to his kept his hard-on straining. He ached.

So while Piper kept trying to create a web of privacy around them with their shared experiences as singers and songwriters, his body yearned only for Emmie. Emmie, who talked business with the manager and record company people. Who smelled like sweet flowers and whose legs opened a little wider for him each time his hand inched up her thigh.

A bunch of fans came over to the table and asked Piper for autographs. The opportunity he’d waited for. “Listen, I’ve got to get Emmie home. She hasn’t been feeling well.”

Derek stopped his conversation, his brow furrowing in concern. “What’s the matter?”

“She hit her head.”

Emmie gave him a disbelieving look.

“How the hell’d you do that?” Derek asked.

“She slipped.” Emmie squeezed his thigh. “She was on her date. It was raining . . .” Oh, Christ, could he please get her out of here?

“How’d
you
find out?” Derek asked, looking between them.

Emmie’s brow arched, waiting for his answer.

“She’d asked the douche to bring her home, and I was just leaving the house. That’s why I missed sound check. I didn’t want to leave her alone—”

“So you brought her to a rock concert?” one of the record company guys asked.

“Figured it was better than leaving her alone.”

“You all right?” Derek asked her.

She shrugged. “I should get home.”

Derek got up. “I’ll take her.”

“No.” Slater gave Derek a look to remind him he was the business guy in the band, and he needed to stay and work Piper’s people. Or whatever. Slater hoped Derek just sat the fuck back down so Slater could get his girl home and naked. Derek nodded. Thank fucking Christ.

Slater reached under her arm and practically dragged her up. “Great to meet you all. Look forward to seeing you at the end of October.” He shook hands with the manager and A&R guy. Thanks to the fans, Piper didn’t even notice as Slater ushered Emmie out the back of the club.

“That was smooth,” she said, as soon as they got outside.

Gripping her arm, he hurried her to the car, opened her door, and practically tossed her into the front seat.

“Slater,” she said, laughing.

He slammed her door and cut around to his side of the car, shoved the key in the ignition, and quickly checked his mirrors before peeling out.

“What is your problem?” she asked.

“Getting you home.”

“Yes, I know. But we’ve got all night.”

He turned to her, letting her know the ridiculousness of her statement. His dick hurt, and he shifted his jeans to give himself some room. She looked down at his lap, and her eyes flared with desire.

She blew out a soft breath. “Wow.”

He wanted her so badly, he couldn’t see straight.

Running a yellow light, he accelerated to get on the freeway on-ramp. “Where did you go tonight?”

“What? Oh, when I went outside?”

“It’s raining. Why would you go outside?”

“I needed some air.” Her brow furrowed. “How did you even see me? The place was packed tonight.”

Did he need to answer that? “You left right after Piper came in.”

“The way she looked at you. She was like a lion spotting a gazelle.”

“You’re worried about me and Piper?” He knew he sounded incredulous, but come on,
Piper
? Versus Emmie Valencia?
Seriously?

“Of course I am. She’s beautiful.”

“So?”

“So, she’s . . . beautiful. And sexy.”

“Is she? Well, you’re that and so much more.”

She smirked, but he could see a hint of pleasure in her eyes.

He sighed. “Okay, here’s my list of things to worry about before Piper Lee. Ready?”

Her smile was tentative, wary.

“One, a zombie apocalypse. Two, a land shark attack. And, three, incurable boils.” He reached for her hand. “Do I need to go on? Because I can. And I still won’t get to Piper Lee. Now, get over here.” All he wanted was to feel her, to have her close.

She smiled, undoing her seatbelt and sliding to the center. She buckled herself in and leaned against him, all her heat and fragrance filling him up inside. He wrapped an arm around her, and she burrowed into him.

“Finally.”

“What does that mean?” She looked up at him.

“You’ve been resisting me since we left the restaurant.”

“Well, you got all weird. Right after we did it.”

“You rocked my world, Em. I needed a moment.” She started to pull away, but his hand slid down her arm, holding her to him.

“Did you freak out? Even a little?”

“What? No. Just the opposite. It was so fucking good, it blew out half the grid. I needed to come back to earth.”

“You seriously didn’t have any doubts?”

“I waited a long damn time for this, Em. I waited until I was sure.”

“Sure of what?”

“My feelings. I wasn’t going to mess with you. First, you were Derek’s sister to me. Then, you were my Emmie. And I wouldn’t hurt you with casual sex. You’d hate yourself. So, I waited. And then, tonight, I just couldn’t fucking take it anymore.”

“I know. I drive men wild.”

“You’re still being distant.”

She turned to him, one hand curling in his shirt. “God, Slater, what do you want me to say? I’m a mess right now.”

That’s
what I want you to say. I want you to be Emmie. I want us to be the way we are together, where we tell each other the truth. That’s what I need.”

“I can’t talk when I don’t know what I’m feeling.” She worried her hands.

“Start anywhere.”

“I’m scared to death.”

“Because you think I want Piper?”

“Well, yeah, I do think it’s pretty inevitable. At some point you and Piper Lee are going to happen. But it’s not just that. It’s everything. You have to know it’s all going to change for you. Starting with the festival.”

“So, you didn’t hear anything I said tonight?”

She closed her eyes. “I heard what you said when you were extremely . . . aroused.”

“Right. And I get boners for any woman with a pulse. I’m a man whore, right?”

The tension broke when she smiled. “Yes.”

“I’m a single guy, enjoying what’s offered. No, I’ve never been in a relationship before. But that’s because I’ve never met anybody I wanted the way I want you.” His voice broke, probably from singing tonight. “I’m fucking crazy about you.”

“You are?”

“I am.”

She drew in a deep breath, turned her face into his chest. She inhaled.

“Do I stink?” He needed a shower.

“You smell delicious. Like your soap and rain and Slater.”

His arm tightened around her. “You smell good, too.”

Leaning up, she kissed his cheek. Then, kissed it again, only her mouth had opened a little so he felt the hint of moisture. Her fingers started unbuttoning his shirt as her tongue traced the fine cartilage of his ear. He shifted, his erection roaring back, hard and throbbing.

Pushing aside the shirt, her hand skimmed his chest. “I love your body.”

“I love yours.” He could barely speak.

“Just, um, just tell me why. Why me? I mean, isn’t Piper kind of perfect for you? She’s like the male version of you.”

“Why would I want to hang out with me? Besides, I like who I am around you.” He hoped she understood what that meant to him. “You’re real, Emmie. I can see all of you.” His hand closed over hers. “And I like everything I see.”

She nuzzled his neck, giving it a lick. “Slater?” Her whispery voice gave him goose bumps. “I really like you.” Her mouth slid down his collarbone, and her hand cupped him firmly through his jeans.

His hips bucked, and he withdrew her arm so he could put two hands on the steering wheel. “Stop. Seriously, Em. I’ve been hurting all night. We’re almost home.”

“Can’t wait.” She licked his nipple, and then her whole mouth covered it and she sucked.

“Ah. Fuck.” Desire exploded in his veins, coursing through him, turning him into a fireball of lust. “Emmie, please, wait.”

“Nuh-uh.” Her tongue traced down his chest, as she reached for the button on his jeans. Slowly, she popped the first one. Her mouth and tongue sucked and licked down his abdomen to the top of his boxers. “You have no idea what this tattoo does to me.” Holding his cock through his boxers, she shifted it aside and kissed his tattoo.

And then, looking up at him, her tongue swirled around the ink.

“Aw, fuck, Em.”

She popped the next button and then the next, her mouth kissing his erection through the slit in his boxers.

“Jesus, fuck.” His ass lifted off the seat, and his foot pushed too hard on the accelerator. “Stop. I mean it—fuck.”

He could feel her breath on his dick, as she popped the last button. And then she lowered his boxers with her teeth, turning her head to look up at him with the sexiest eyes he’d ever seen.

“We’re going to have an accident,” he bit out.

Holding his boxers down, she licked his cock from the base to the tip, and then, holy mother of God, her hand closed around him and she pulled him away from his stomach. But she didn’t take him in her mouth. No, she broke out in a slow, seductive smile, and then she let out a contented sigh as she rubbed the head of his dick over her smooth cheeks, across those pink lips. It was too much. Too fucking much. He thought he might come right then.

And then, slowly, she sucked him all the way to the back of her throat. He couldn’t see straight. He couldn’t drive. Getting off at the next exit, one hand on her head to still her—but not remove her from his raging cock—he pulled off to the side of the deserted country road and jerked the gear into park.

Groping for the lever, he pushed the seat back, making more room for her. She got up on her hands and knees, started pumping him in and out of her deliciously wet, hot mouth, her tongue running zigzags and swirls, licking him, and sucking him in hard.

“Fuck. Oh, fuck. Oh, fuck.” His hips bucked off the seat as desire swept across his skin, his balls tightened, and he came violently in her mouth. She kept up the suction as he continued to spurt into her. It just kept coming until he felt completely and utterly spent. He sank into the seat, his fingers sifting into her soft, silky hair.

She sat up beside him, wiping her mouth with a satisfied grin. “That was really good.”

He stuttered out a laugh. His body shook with the aftermath of his explosive release. “Jesus. What you do to me.”

She came up to him, leaning across his lap and wrapping her arms around his neck. “Take me home.”
