Behind them, on the fringes of the Amour Estate, eyes watched them leave. Lips pulled back in a snarl, and drool leaked from fanged jaws.
And on this Saturday, the last day of October, this Halloween, as the men were making their way up the bayou, the moon hung brilliant over Ducros Parish.
Marie sat on the porch of the shack overlooking the bayou and waited. She was uneasy, and did not quite understand why. Pat was returning after all these years, the priest had told her. But, she wondered, how could he have been so certain?
Eli Daily III stood on the porch of his house in town and gazed at the fullness of the moon, feeling the hot blood begin to stir in him, raising the hairs on his neck. He left the porch and trotted into the darkness, where he could dance and strut.
“Are we going to win this fight?” Pat raised his voice to be heard over the noise of the outboard motor.
Father Strahan smiled, the moonlight reflecting off of his suddenly fanged teeth. Not yet, he cautioned himself. Wait for the Master's call. His eyes lost their yellow glow and his teeth and tongue returned to normal. He smiled back at Pat and said, “One of us will.”
