Magda stood in open-mouthed shock as she realized she was alone.  The vampires were nearly upon her.  Ester spoke to Alicia.  “You won’t want to see.”

Alicia allowed Deston to nudge her into through the door of the bungalow.  She didn’t look back as she heard the painful wail of a witch meeting her death.

Deston stood guard inside the door as Alicia sank to her knees at his back.  He knew she needed the solid comfort of his body but that would have to wait.  He could scarcely believe the events of the last few minutes.  The wolf within him insisted on remaining vigilant as long as a shadow of threat remained. 

The knock on the door was soft, polite. 
Deston raised his nose to the air and then relaxed.  The scent was a friend.  He stood on two legs, allowing himself to change.  Alicia passed him a soft shirt which he tied around his middle as he walked to the door. 

Sean Gallagher stood there beside the lovely witch.  His expression was as affable and pleasant as if he’d just arrived for a dinner party.  “I’m pleased to find you in one piece.”  Sean turned and glanced at the dark street.  There was no sign of his vampire attendants.  Or the spiteful Magda.  “You and your lady can be easy now.  The danger is gone.”

Deston held out a hand.  Sean stared at it for a moment and then broke into a smile.  He shook the werewolf’s hand vigorously.  The witch nuzzled against him and smiled lazily at Deston, who only now recalled her name.  Alicia had told him of her unusual encounter on the beach. 

Ester.

Deston felt Alicia’s arm around his waist.  She touched his face and he kissed her forehead.

Ester spoke almost tenderly.  “You are safe now.”

“You’ve made sure of that,” said Alicia.  “We’ll be grateful forever.”

“Yes,”
Deston agreed.  As he watched the pair standing comfortably side by side in his doorway something suddenly occurred to him.  “You are together?”

Sean nodded.  “For a long time.  Perhaps tomorrow there will be time for details.”

Deston grinned.  “A pint at Ray’s?”

Sean arched an eyebrow good naturedly.  “And you will be paying this time.”

Ester nudged him meaningfully.  “We should leave them to their rest, my love.”  Her hand sought Alicia’s belly and rested lightly over the bulge.  Her dark eyes were bright.  “You will teach her the right ways.”

Alicia nodded.  “Yes.”

The witch and the vampire locked hands and retreated down the steps of the bungalow.  Sean Gallagher glanced back at them one more time, his voice full of affection.  “’Tis a good thing to have friends.”

Deston
watched the unlikely pair saunter down the dark street as relaxed as if they were any beautiful young couple enjoying an after dinner stroll.  He saw the way their eyes met and they spoke quiet words even his werewolf ears could not catch.  But their affections were evident.

Love.

Alicia drew him close and issued a soft sigh. As Deston’s arms wrapped around his mate he felt the anxiety of all these perilous months lifting and being replaced with something else.  The hopefulness was new to them both and most welcome.  Their child rolled gently in her mother’s womb and Deston kissed Alicia deeply.  She broke the embrace after a moment and looked deep into his eyes.  Then the corners of her mouth rose in a mischievous grin and she pulled the tied shirt loose from his waist.  Deston shut the door of their home and Alicia chuckled over his instant hardness.  She hastily removed her clothing, opening herself to him and he gladly buried himself inside her, welcoming the rise of orgasmic fury.  It was always like this.  And it would always be like this.
