The back of me i
s complete
ly exposed. The air feels
nice on
my hot skin. He doesn’t break the stare as he very slowly brings his hands up my sides, past my waist. Then he slowly pulls
the sleev
es down my arms and removes the gown from my body. He reaches
over an
d grabs for my clothes then begins
t
o dress me. His eyes take in every part of me, but he doesn’t touch me anymore. It’s complete torture.
Once I’m completely dressed he leaves my side to sit on the bed. He rests
his head in his h
ands and I hear him breathing deeply
.
“You’re trying
to kill me, aren’t you?” he shakes
his head.
“I’m going to have to take like five cold showers.”
We manage
to get out of the hospital wit
hout being noticed. Once we are
in A
dam’s truck I go to work on the cast
on my arm.
I’ve gotten nowhere by the time we get to my house.
I run
through my room grab
bing as much clothing as I can. After I’m all packed up I take
a quic
k shower and put out plenty of food for Sire. I grab as much money as I can find and soon we’
re on the
way to Adam’s house so he can
do
the same. Luckily, Adam finds
this rea
lly great miniature saw that takes
my cast right off.
Once we’re on interstate ninety-f
ive
there’
s
no stopping us. We stop at the
North Caro
lina visitor’s center and I call Bernie and tell her I have
a fami
ly emergency out of town. She’
s extremely w
orried about me. Adam and I haven
’t been in school for a
week now and since I don’t have a phone, she couldn’t reach me. I don’t
tell her about my little hospital visit.
After driving for hours, Adam admits he needs sleep. We stop
off in Virginia to get a room. We pay double for it just so the guy behind the counter will give it to us. Us both being under eighteen made it next to impossible to find a room—thank God for crooked, money hungry people.
I sit
next to him in bed a
nd watch
him
as he
sleep
s. He’s done so much for me in the last couple of months.
I’ve never been more thankful for a person in my life
.
He’s adorable when he sleeps. When I brush a few strands of hair out of his face, he makes a soft mewing noise. I don’t think I’ll
ever love another person th
e way I love the boy
sleeping
peacefully next to me. He rolls over closer to me and soon I’m
sleep
ing soundly next to him. Tonight, there are no nightmares
, just sleep.
When I wake up the next morning Adam’s gone. I rip the blankets off of me and run to the door. His truck is gone! I look around the
room,
all of his things are still there. I’m in
comple
te freak-out mode when I notice the note on the bedside table.
Hey
,
Sleeping Beauty! I ran to get some breakfast so don’t freak out if you wake up and I’m not here. Hope you like sausage biscuits. I wo
n’t be gone too long. I love you.
Adam
I read th
e letter over and over again. It still feels like a dream when I think
about my relationship with Adam.
I get myself together and jump in the shower. I hum softly to myself as the hot water washes everything away. For the first time, in a long time, I feel like things are going to be fine. I’ll go to Trenton Hospital
, get information from my mother, figure out how to get the eye back, and live happily ever after with my whole family and the
love of my life, that’s the master plan.
I turn off the shower water and start to dry my hair. Wrapping
the big white t
owel around myself, I step
out of
the cloudy bathroom. Once I’m out
o
f the small steam room, I drop the towel and start to dress myself. I have no idea I’m not alone in the room until I hear someone behind me.
I scream out as I spin around naked. Adam drops his drink, soda splashes all
over the flo
or of the motel room.
His eyes devour me, I feel his gaze all over my heated skin
.
His breathing gets heavier. He throws the bags of food on the bed and leaves the room. I hear him mumbling something about more cold showers as he shuts the door behind him.
Once I’m all dressed, we eat in silence and soon we’
r
e all packed up and
bac
k on the road.
Three rest stops and a drive-thru later,
we enter New Jersey. It doesn’t
take long to get to
West
Trento
n and before long we’re settled in at a cheap motel
and
planning our trip to the hospital
for the following day.
We spend the rest of
the night watching sitcoms and laughing about all the crazy things that had happened in the last couple of months.
He tells
me about how he spent the time
that we were apart and how it was so hard for him to stay away from me. It’s just a
normal
,
wonderful night.
You’d never know there’s a completely deranged group of people after me.
We start
to wrestle in bed laughing and tickling each other. I
get the best of him and pin
him to the bed.
“I love you,” I sigh
.
He pauses and looks at me differently. His deep, green eyes get darker.
“I love you, more,” he whispers
.
“Well…I love you, most,” I start to tickle him again.
He laughs out loud and it’s a beautiful noise.
“Oh
, no ma’am,
I d
on’t think so! I love you,
moste
st
!”
“Okay
,
that does
n’t even count because
mostest
isn’t a word!” I laugh
. “So
,
I win!”
“No, I win!” he growls
.
I laugh
harder a
s he flips me over and starts to tickle me. I try to get away and I accidently bang
my head o
n the wooden headboard that’s screwed to the wall. He stops tickling me and rubs
my head sweetly.
He leans down and kisses
my he
ad. I turn my head a bit giving him a quick kiss. He kisses me back harder and soon we’
re kissing like never before.
His hands delve into my hair as he pulls
my
lips closer against his. I feel
his bod
y weight get heavier as he moves on top of me. Wrapping
my
arms around his neck, I pull him closer. I can
feel myself losing control. With a sudden burst of strength
, I flip him over and straddle
him.
“Oh God, Mage,” he looks up at me in awe.
Leaning down, I start
kissing his ne
ck and I don’t stop. This is what I want. Adam’s
been making me crazy with his kisses for m
onths and now all that matters is that I have him.
He grabs my hips, pulling me down onto him harder. He grinds against me, making me wish that clothing never existed. He groans against my mouth and it travels down my spine then taps against my tailbone. I shiver.
“I want you,” I say against his lips.
“Not as bad as I want you,” he groans.
I reach down for the button of his
camo
shorts. Then it all stops.
His h
ands gr
asp the top of my arms as he starts
to push me away.
“Mage…w
e need to stop.”
“Why?” I
whine in his ear as I continue
to nuzzle and kiss.
“We can’t…not like this,” he whispers
.
He’s fighting himself. I can see the
strain in his fac
e.
“Is there somethi
ng wrong with me?”
My chest feels
heavy with hurt
and embarrassment from his rejection.
He reaches up and pushes
his hands into my hair forcing me to look at him.
“There’
s absolutely nothing
wrong with you. You’re perfect—y
ou’re more perfect than perfect
. You have no idea,” he sighs.
“
Trust
me when I say that stopping
this is one of the hardest things I’
ve ev
er done. There’s nothing I’
d rather do tha
n make love to you right now. I
t’s
just not right, Mage. Not like this, w
hen it happens I want us to both be ready and I don’t want it to be in some
sleazy
motel room in Jersey.”
How did I get so lucky? He wants
our first time
to be perfect because he thinks I’m
perfect.
He’s probably the only teenage boy in the world who would turn down sex.
I lean down, giving him a quick smooch before I snuggle up to him.
“I really do love you,” I nuzzle his stubbly chin
.
“I love you…m
ore than you could ever know. Goodnight.”
He reaches over and turns
off the be
dside lamp. He falls asleep in no time. I’m
awake
since my brain won’t stop. I can’t stop thinking about what’s going to
happen tomorrow.
I’m
finally
going to meet my mother. I’ll finally have the answers I’
ve wanted for so long.
After lying there for a while
, I decide
to get up and walk out
side for some fresh air. I stand
there in the doorway of the motel room staring around at this pl
ace called New Jersey. I walk outside and lean
against Adam’s old truck
. Running my fingers across the hood, I realize just how rusty the truck is. He loves this truck and I love
him.
He deserves everything he wants and more. I can make this old rust bucket everything he could ever dream of.
I slowly walk around his truck and begin imagining what Adam wants it to look like. I look
ar
ound to make sure that no one’s watching. It’
s t
wo in the morning—everyone’s
asleep.
Purple flames drip
from my fing
ers in very small amounts, it’
s just enough to connect with th
e cold rust of the truck. I run
the fire across different
parts of the vehicle and watch as the rust dissolves
and a br
and new black paint job appears
.
An hour later, I stand
aga
inst the doorway and look
over my
new project. The old Ford looks brand new—n
ot a speck of rust
had survived my fire.
I close the door and get in bed. I’m
asleep in no time.
Chapter 25
A Strait Jacket and a Smile
I wake
the following morning with Adam jumping all over the bed and kissing me all over my cheeks and nose.
“Thank you! Tha
nk you! Thank you!” he chants
.
I giggle at him as I climb out of the bed and go
str
aight for the bathroom. It feels good to make him happy, so from now on I’ll always try to make him happy.
The ride to Trenton
Psych
takes
less
than ten minutes. My nerves are out of control. I can’t believe that this i
s actually
about to happen. When we pull into the parking lot I start to feel a little sick to my stomach—nerves. We walk inside the old creepy building, the door squeaks as it closes
behind us.
