I once asked Anaïs Nin why she had expurgated the sexual scenes in her diaries, and she replied: “Because I was aware that any woman who wrote frankly about her sex life was never again taken seriously by literary critics.” “But, Miss Nin,” I protested, “that is exactly why we must do it.” This exchange took place at the 92nd Street Y in 1971 or 1972. Nin remains correct. Women who write about sex are still denigrated.
