“I kno—”
Aiden cut me off by pressing his lips against mine, and for the first time in the last four months, I didn’t feel guilty for what we were about to do.
Chapter 24
The next day, Aiden and I went to England. We stood around Anna’s computer with Kai in the chair, his fingers dancing over the keyboard. Dave had called to ask if I still wanted to see the footage of Nathan in the psych ward. My response was, “Hell yeah!”
“Was he still out of it when he was admitted?” Aiden asked Kai.
“He slept like a baby the whole time,” Kai replied.
“You’re lucky you didn’t kill the guy,” Dave said, shaking his head. “Not that he didn’t deserve it.”
“Okay, I’ve got the live feed ready,” Kai said.
Aiden wrapped his arms around me from behind as Kai started the video.
Nathan was sitting with his back against the padded white wall, just as I’d imagined. He expression was blank as he stared straight ahead.
“Why is he wearing a straitjacket?” I asked.
“And why does he look so doped up?” Aiden added.
“That’s the next movie we have for you.” Kai grinned.
As soon as I heard what both Kai and Dave were thinking, I just about choked on a laugh.
Aiden chuckled nervously. “What?”
I turned my head so I could see his face. “You’ll see.” I looked back at the computer and watched as Kai brought up the video that would see our ultimate vengeance.
The camera was zoomed in, showing Nathan covered in blood that seemed to be coming from the area where he injected himself. He was screaming, trying to tell everyone that he was super-human and that someone had implanted something in him that had turned him into a normal. The camera zoomed out to show the room was filled with doctors and nurses holding him down while one tried to inject him with a needle. Nobody believed him. Apparently, Kai had put on his transfer papers that Nathan was a seriously disturbed individual who lived in a fantasy world where he believed he was like Superman, but he’d been injected with his own Kryptonite and displayed frequent episodes of self-harming.
“That’s why he’s in the straitjacket?” Aiden asked when Kai stopped the video.
“Yeah, he was trying to get the implant out with his fingers,” Dave said.
“You guys are so awesome,” I said, throwing my arms around Kai and Dave, which was kind of awkward considering Kai was sitting in the chair and Dave was standing behind him. “Thank you so much.”
“You’re welcome,” Dave said.
Kai nodded. “The bastard deserved it.”
I hopped up to sit on the edge of the desk. Aiden stood beside me and slung his arm over my shoulders.
“What do we do about the world looking for us?” Aiden asked.
A devilish grin spread across Kai’s face. “I could take down the net.”
“Or you could just hide out for a while, which I’m guessing you were going to do anyway,” Dave suggested. “And then when you do decide to venture back into civilization, I think you’re both strong enough to make sure no one notices you. You know, like Nathan did when he was around your mum.”
“I guess so,” I said.
Aiden picked up a piece of my hair and twirled it through his fingers. “By the time we’ve finished our holiday, everyone would’ve probably forgotten about us anyway.”
I screwed up my face. “How long do you expect this holiday to last?”
“Well, I think we’ve got a lot of catching up to do.”
I jabbed my arm into his side.
“What did you do that for?” he asked.
“I can’t believe you just said that in front of your dad,” I said through gritted teeth.
Aiden laughed. “I didn’t mean it like that. I want us to spend time just being teenagers. You know, doing teenage things that don’t automatically mean in the bedroom.”
“Oh, my God.” I put my head in my hands.
“Just one more thing,” Dave said, saving me from any further embarrassment. “Harry wanted me to ask you if you could pop over to the room after you’ve finished here.”
“Okay,” I said.
“Oh, and you can tell Chelsea that her mum is going to be staying in Italy for a bit longer with your grandma. Apparently, the two of them are having a ball in the countryside.”
“And where’s Georgia?” Aiden asked.
“She’s downstairs with Anna. She’s going to be staying here for a bit,” Dave said.
“Fine by me,” Aiden replied. “It’s not like we’re moving back here.”
When Dave looked at me, I shrugged. “I don’t care.”
“Good.” Dave smiled. “I hope you two won’t be strangers now that this is all over?”
“And now that Georgia’s here,” Kai muttered under his breath.
Dave rolled his eyes. “Yeah, now that Georgia’s here.”
“Don’t worry, Dad. That bitch won’t keep us away.”
“Aiden,” Dave said, sounding all parental. He shook his head. “Just go, you two.”
I smiled. “See ya later.”
“See ya,” Aiden said.
We transported to the room, where Harry was pacing the walkway.
He came to a halt. “Oh good, you’re here.”
“What’s wrong?” Aiden asked.
“Nothing’s wrong.” Harry walked over to us. “It’s just that I got some more tests back. And it seems that your grandma’s genes have been altered—permanently.”
“What?” Aiden and I both practically yelled.
“I’ve gone over it again and again, and the data’s right. I think she’s going to remain like that. I mean, I have to do more testing as time goes by, but I think your blood has changed her for good. And I need to start running some test on Chelsea and Marie, too, because you gave them your blood as well.”
“Holy shit,” Aiden said.
I realised what had Harry bouncing around wasn’t just what the data said about Grandma, Chelsea, and Marie. But I wasn’t as excited about it as Harry was. “My blood can end pain and suffering, can’t it?”
Harry nodded with excitement. “I think it can.”
I thought about what that could mean: the end of sickness, heartache, people dying. But then there would be the other side. My father was the perfect example. He wanted power. He wanted to manipulate everyone around him, and he wouldn’t be the only one who would want that.
So my choice was a difficult one but, at the same time, an easy one. We would have to find a way to separate the gene for eternal life from the one to heal. And we would also have to make sure it wasn’t permanent. People needed to get sick and injured, and people needed to be stoppable.
In the interest of maintaining order, I would not change everyone. At least not before the world was ready for it…
