Prologue
Melissa

“Oh my God.” Janet said in the background. I rolled my eyes. I thought she was here to get my curling iron and go, but of course she was dragging her feet. “Oh shit, Melissa!” She cursed which made my ears perk.

“Girl, what is it?” I asked on the way over to my bedroom. “I told you when you came here that you have to get the curling iron and go. You know that Jamal is on his way back here and I’m hoping that me and him go another round.” I felt the devilish smile grow across my face.

I got to the bedroom and found her sitting on my bed facing the wall. She had her back towards me and I could see that she was holding something.

“What are you doing?” I asked. I saw the curling iron on the bed along with some other hair products that she never asked for. “See, this is why I hate lending you my shit. You asked to borrow my curling iron and here you are with my flat iron, blow dryer, and my hair spray. Girl, take your cheap ass to the salon and get your ass a blowout.” I started gathering my things off my bed. I was about to tell her something else, but when I looked at her I notice what she was holding. “What the fuck are you doing with Jamal’s bag?”

Janet was holding Jamal’s overnight bag but she wasn’t saying a word. I opened my mouth to curse her out because I knew she didn’t have any boundaries with my stuff, but she had no business touching my boyfriend’s stuff. I was about to say something, but when she looked at me, she looked so shocked, so surprised, she looked like she saw something that she wasn’t supposed to see.

“Melissa…” Her voice was so quiet, which is strange considering how loud Janet usually was. “What the fuck is this shit?” She turned all the way around and then dumped the contents of the bag out.

The bed was now covered with a bunch of money. It was nothing but rolled up bills in rubberbands. Just stacks and stacks of cash. I held one roll and it was as thick as a bible, they all were. The bills were all 100s just like the rest. I’ve never seen this much cash in person. My bed looked like a hip hop music video shoot. It was such a huge pile of bills.

“How much do you think is in here?” Janet asked passing her hand over the money.

“I don’t know. I don’t know.” I said in a panic voice.

“Where did this money come from?” She picked up some of the money.

“I don’t know.” I shook my head.

“What is Jamal doing with all of this money?”

“I do not know.”

“What does Jamal do for a living again?”

“He’s a marketing exec out in Philly.”

“Uh huh.” She gave me a look.

“What?”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You don’t have to say a word, your face says it all. What is it that you want to say?”

“Are you sure that is where he works for real?”

I wanted to say something smart like I always did but when I thought about it, I really didn’t know much about his work. All I knew that he lived in Philly and worked in marketing. He didn't talk much about his business but to be honest, I never really asked. I guess I’m not used to a guy who really had his own money. Almost in all my past relationships, the guys said that they had their own cash but pretty soon down the line I was either putting money up for dates or just to go places. Which at first, I didn’t mind but then it became me paying for everything and that I couldn’t do. I never had that problem with Jamal. He paid for everything without even hesitating or anything. At first I would be mindful of what I bought but he would always go above and beyond, so I pretty soon never paid attention to the dollar amount. Maybe I should have.

“So what are you going to do?” She asked me the question that was now running through my head. How could I even start to answer a question that I don’t even know how to answer.

“I don’t know.” I told her truthfully again. “I just don’t know. I never thought…” I drifted off. “I know what I should do.”

“What?”

“Clean this shit up.” I swept all the bundles and stacks of money into a neater pile. I grabbed the bag and started putting the money in the bag. “The last thing I need is for him to come in here and see all of this out.”

“The fuck?” She held my hand back. “Are you crazy? Is that really the last thing that you need? The last thing you really need is to let this criminal stay here.”

“Criminal?” I scrunched my face. “Jamal is not a criminal.” I shoved all the money into the bag. “Now let’s hurry up.”

I put the bag down and began walking towards my bathroom. I splashed some cold water on my face. I needed a second alone and I thought I could be by myself, but sure enough, my friend was on my heels.

“What do you mean by him not being a criminal? Do you think that he got all that money by legal means? You know no way in hell all that cash is legit.”

“You don’t know that Janet.”

“And I suppose you do?” She crossed her arms. “Is there something about Jamal that you haven’t told me?” She squinted her eyes.

“What are you talking about? You know that I tell you everything.” I brushed it off but Janet wasn’t letting it go.

“Then what’s with all the money!” She yelled.

“What?!” I turned around and yelled back. “I don’t fucking know!” I screamed.

We started going back and forth. It was going so fast and so loud that I couldn’t make anything out of what neither of us were saying.

“Hey!” Jamal yelled over us. We both got quiet and turned around looking at him. He still had the copy of my key that I gave him in his hand. He placed it on my stand and turned to us. “What’s going on here?” He asked and Janet looked over at me. We locked eyes for a second then looked back at him. “So, who is going to tell me what is happening?”

Chapter 1
Melissa

It was two days before New Year’s Eve and I was stuck at work. Usually I would be pissed but I was pulling in extra hours at a paralegal so that I could take New Year’s Eve, New Year’s day, and the next day off. New Year’s in New York City is just the best and I just needed some time to myself. My name is Melissa, I’m 22 years old, have a curvy body, and I’m recently single.

Michael and I were together since I was 19 years old. We met outside of a nightclub. I was so excited because my best friend Janet had just turned 18 so we were going to have a blast. I didn’t get to do much partying for myself because she still couldn’t get into the club, but now that she could, we were going almost every weekend. So on the one night that we were tired coming out of the club, there was Michael.

I swear it was like our eyes just locked on within seconds. He smiled at me and I smiled back. I could feel the butterflies flying around. I never had high school boyfriends so I didn’t get it that it was just a rush of feelings. When he came over and smiled at me again.

“How are you ladies doing?” He asked us but he was staring right at me.

“We’re good.” I answered for the both of us.

“So how did you guys enjoy the club?” He was still looking at me.

“It was okay.” We were just staring at each other. Out of nowhere, Janet jumped in.

“Hi, my name is Janet and this is Melissa.” She introduced me while we were still staring at each other.

“Michael.”

And from there we just started dating. He was my first love. He took my virginity and everything. I was nervous at the age of 20 and I was so afraid of making him wait any longer. He waited close to a year and when my birthday came around, he got us a nice room in a hotel. He lived in Queens and I was still living in a crappy one bedroom apartment with my mom in Brooklyn, so he wanted me all to himself. He himself had roommates, so when he presented me with a room for the weekend, I felt like the least I could do was give up my virginity.

“This is a nice hotel room.” I told him as he opened that door on the weekend that we were at the hotel. There were roses, champagne, and some candles were lit. “Wow, you went all out.”

“Well this is our first night together so it has to be special. I didn’t want it to just be us in some hotel room.”

“It is a room in Manhattan. You didn’t spare any expense. I see being a 25 year old drug store manager has its perks.” I laughed.

“I’m only an assistant manager.” He reminded me.

“I got big dreams for you baby.” I teased rubbing my nose against his. “I already see you as the manager and not just an assistant manager.” I rolled my heads in typical TV black woman of the 90s. “You are all that boo.” I giggled.

“I’m only doing this drugstore thing until I get my degree in business. Then I’m going to open my own business and be the boss.”

“You already the boss to me.” I flirted back.

And that was all it took. All it took was me calling him my boss and our clothes went flying everywhere. He kissed me on my neck and I swooned my way to the bed. He opened my legs and placed his hand right in the center. I jumped up and moved away.

“What happened?” He asked while laying next to me.

“I’ve never had anybody touch me there before.” I explained to him. “I told you I’m a virgin.”

“I know, but it’s okay.” He reassured me. He kissed me and we started to make out. I thought that would be all but then he got on top of me and it all got really real. Next thing I know my legs were open, he was inside of me, and the pain was unbearable.

I held all my screams in, remembering what Janet and other girls told me. The first time will be painful, but when I couldn’t anymore, he just looked at me.

“What’s going on?” He asked and I shook my head.

“Nothing.” I lied through my fake smile.

“But you have tears.” He told me and I felt my face. Sure enough there were tears. I didn’t even feel them.

“It hurts.”

“Then why didn’t you say anything?”

“I didn’t want to ruin this.” He pulled all the way out when I said that.

Michael sat up on the bed.
