It struck Gisele how much danger her father had been in, and the truth hit her like a bolt of lightning. When her father had been taken to prison, he’d been under duress from the mob. He’d been caught in their web, and how or why didn’t matter right now.

Her former blind trust of those around her had vanished, replaced with fear and trepidation. The Danilovs had not raised her out of kindness, as she’d assumed. She hadn’t been taken in as a favor to her father for being loyal to them.

Gisele had been accepted by Yuri Danilov as his foster daughter so the mobster could steal what her father had left for her. Her whole life had been a lie. All the pampering, the lifestyle, had been hers, just so she wouldn’t leave.

And she hadn’t. Stupidly, Gisele had stayed with the family until she’d turned twenty-one, just as Alek had asked her to. And now she knew why he’d been so adamant. Rage surged through her body. Even her brother had betrayed her, as he hadn’t spoken a word about what he’d known.

Horror gripped her. To make it all worse, Gisele had dragged Micah into this mess. He was waiting for her in the lobby with no idea of how bad things were. She lowered the note to her lap, with her hands shaking and her heart pounding.

Then Gisele flipped to the second page of the note. She stared at the page, unable to believe what she’d just read. Her father wrote that if she handled this right, she’d be a wealthy woman. She reread the passage to be sure her eyes hadn’t played tricks on her.

No wonder the mob was after her. Gisele was truly afraid; she’s been thrust into serious trouble, through no will of her own.

She gripped the note and read each word again carefully. But there was no mistaking the message.

In the bank in Zurich, I’ve left you an extremely rare blue diamond. There are only a few gems of this type in the world. At the time of this writing, its value was estimated at forty million dollars.

A blue diamond. Forty. Million. Dollars. Gisele was way out of her league. She was expected to swim in a sea of sharks and survive. Panic swamped her. She didn’t know what to do, or where to turn.
