It was going to work because Rodolfo was hungry.

Marvin knocked again, hearing the irritation swelling in Rodolfo’s mind.

“Pizza!” he yelled.

The door cracked open, the chain was still locked in.

“Eh?”

“I’ve got one large meat lovers, just need you to sign the credit card receipt.” Marvin spoke fast so that Rodolfo wouldn’t deny ordering it. He showed the credit card receipt so that Rodolfo would know the pizza had been pre-paid.  The greedy little man took the bait.

“Okay,” he said, unchaining the door and as he took the receipt to scribble something illegible.

Marvin threw a headlock. He dragged Rodolfo out of the doorway. Then kicked the door shut and pulled a gun he didn’t intend to use.

“I’m here for the ten grand, Mr. Lofaro.” Marvin gave the man a strong choke.

Rodolfo gasped then laughed. “You’re the guy? What is this? You’re dressed up like a pizza guy. This some kind of a sting?”

“I want the money.”

“Uh, I need it and plan on paying it back.”

Marvin squeezed harder and put the gun at Rodolfo’s eye.

“Don’t lie to me I know exactly what you plan to do with the money and paying it back isn’t on the table.”

Rodolfo stared at the barrel of Marvin’s gun.

“You’re not a very good psychic if you’re only now figuring this out.”

The man dropped his guard. Rodolfo was aware of psychics working at same day loan services.  In fact, he always tried to exploit newer hires, like Marvin.

“I knew the whole time.”

“So why’d you give me the loan if you still knew I wasn’t going to pay it back?”

“Because I’m not just a psychic.”

Rodolfo laughed, “You’re a pizza delivery guy, too?”

“I’m a killer.”

Rodolfo didn’t process what Marvin had said. He just kept laughing.

“You know what I found inside your head while you stood there and put up your little wall to trick us? You have no one in your life, no one who knows the real you, and no one to miss you. You are convenient for my pleasures.”

The laughter stopped. Marvin could feel Rodolfo’s fear. He dug deeper into the man’s thoughts and held onto them, gazing into the desperate confusion he squeezed them for every last thought and memory. They were the thoughts and memories of a passing life.

Then the thoughts stopped.

It was Marvin’s favorite moment. It was crisp and clean, real silence. Nothing in the world compared to it.

He took the money Rodolfo would never pay back. He considered it his severance pay, since Judy and Carl would know what he had done the moment he came into work on Monday. He’d just learned a thing or two about switching identities. He thought he might try a warm island. Set up a shop for the tourists.  Tourists are like people who don’t pay back loans.

They disappear all the time.

THE END.
