She looked around her warily. Not at the ship and the soldiers, but at Up World: its grasses, soil, and suns.
“One goes against tradition, Eli,” she said in a brave voice.
“I suppose we will,” he replied. There would be a season of going against the tide, for everyone. In rough waters, he’d want an ally, a friend. Like Maret. As they walked toward the shuttle and its waiting officers, Maret looked with concern at the wound his face bore.
“You would be well, Eli?”
“Yes,” he said, and for all he knew, it would be true.

Kay Kenyon began her writing career as a copywriter at WDSM-TV in Duluth, Minnesota. She kept up her interest in writing through careers in marketing and transportation planning, and published her first novel in 1997.
