“Yes!” She didn’t wait for him to put the ring on her finger, instead kneeling down to embrace the love of her life. He kissed her deeply before slipping the ring on her finger.

“You’ve made me the happiest man on earth,” he whispered.

“It’s not me.” Grace smiled as Lizzie and Jake broke free from Uncle Carl’s grasp to join their hug. “God brought our family together.”

“And I’ll be forever thankful.”

epilogue

Two weeks later, Nickels stood at the altar of the church as the wedding party made its way slowly down the aisle.

Dylan walked beside Sondra, the two smiling at each other as if they were remembering their own wedding. Lizzie followed, resplendent in her dark green dress, carrying a small basket of roses. Walking beside her, obviously counting his steps, Jake balanced the ring-bearer’s pillow. When they reached the front, Nickels grinned at them, and they grinned back. Lizzie pointed to her basket, and he saw Nibbles poking his head out of the flower arrangement. She took her place near Sondra, whose dress couldn’t quite disguise the fact that she was very pregnant now.

Nickels barely had time to wonder whether the hamster had been freshly bathed for the occasion before the organ music swelled, heralding his bride.

The doors of the sanctuary opened to reveal his Grace walking toward him on the arm of her uncle Carl. Her white gown moved with her in fluid folds, her thin veil offering only glimpses of her features. The crowd “oohed” and “aahed” as she passed by their pews, but she looked straight ahead—at him.

When Carl placed her hand in his with a benevolent smile, Nickels felt as if he’d come home. Together they turned to face the pastor and exchange the vows that would bind them for all eternity.

“Dearly beloved,” the preacher began, “we are gathered here today to witness the union of this man, and this woman, in holy matrimony. If there be any reason why they should not be wed, speak now….”

No reason here. Not anymore
. Looking into his bride’s radiant face, Nickels knew he had come full circle.

Years ago I entered this church looking for salvation. Now I know God has granted me so much more. Although I’m unworthy, He’s blessed me beyond measure through His grace
