overcoming his sense of self-respect.

Even as the two wolves bond, their future remains threatened by

and her warlock ally. But the warlock’s plan is far more sinister

than any of them expected. Paris will have to face his own fears,

Prologue

The Alpha mansion of the Marrow pack was filled with a dark and

almost ominous silence. Paris stole a look at the package in his hand

and wondered if he was doing the right thing. It was Tucker’s

birthday today, and Paris had hoped to give his brother a present,

perhaps pursue the bond between them in the process. He loved his

siblings, even if they had always excluded him from their activities.

Maybe it wasn’t too late to mend the rift between them.

Of course, there was always the chance that his olive branch

would be refused and even draw unwanted hostility upon him. Paris

would never know until he tried. Bracing himself for whatever

followed, Paris left the house and slipped into the garden.

Outside, Tucker’s party was in full swing. Paris saw the other

wolf with two of their brothers, Hamilton and Knox. The youngest of

their family, twins Giles and Alissa, stood farther back with some

other members of the pack.

In all honesty, Paris would have preferred to catch Tucker

somewhere alone, but it was too late to back down now. Thankfully,

no one paid much attention to him, and he managed to make his way

to Tucker’s side without incident.

“Hi,” he greeted his brothers. “Happy birthday, Tucker.”

“What are you doing here?” Tucker asked with a frown, ignoring

Paris’s friendly approach. “You should be inside.”

Paris tasted the bitterness of rejection and immediately knew this

had been a bad idea. But everyone was staring at him now, both his

siblings and the rest of the pack. “I just came to give you this.” He

shoved the present in front of Tucker, hoping that his brother would at

least accept it so that Paris could go back to the house and hide.

“Uh…Thanks,” Tucker said as he took the gift. “Now hurry back.

Mom and Dad are around here someplace. You wouldn’t want them

to see you.”

No, indeed, Paris wouldn’t want that. His mother had been

adamant about him not being allowed at his brother’s party. Paris

couldn’t say he was very surprised. In spite of being the oldest

sibling, he’d always been the smallest of the group, more sedate and

quiet in temperament. That must be why his parents couldn’t even

bear to look at him.

Alissa and Giles made their way to Paris’s side and started to lead

him away. Their hold on him was so insistent it hurt, but Paris did

nothing to protest. It was more than clear that Paris’s attempt to reach

out had failed abysmally.

The twins rushed him back into the house. The three of them had

barely entered the mansion when he sensed their parents approaching.

Thankfully, their mother stopped to talk to Tucker. However, Paris

wasn’t so lucky with regard to their father. The Alpha wolf

intercepted the three of them, and Paris forced himself to push back

his apprehension. He bent his neck lightly, exposing his throat in a

gesture of submission. He’d learned the hard way that the best thing

for him was to play nice and stay out of his father’s way.

He’d dared to go against that today, but hopefully, the Alpha

would understand Paris had meant well. No one spoke, and Paris

could feel the anticipation and panic gathering in the air, both from

himself and from his siblings. Distantly, he wondered what they were

thinking. Were they annoyed because they needed to babysit Paris?

Did they want their father to punish him? Or could Paris dare to hope

that they held at least a small measure of affection for him?

In the end, he couldn’t tell, as their father gestured for Alissa and

Giles to return to the party. The twins did so without comment,

leaving Paris alone with the Alpha.

“Paris, come,” his father told him. “I need to talk to you.”

Paris had no choice but to obey. He followed the older wolf as

they walked through the house. He was led into his father’s office,

something that made Paris even more nervous. Usually, he wasn’t

allowed in here. As the oldest son, he should be learning how to lead

the pack, or at least how to help out. But his family had always

pushed him aside, choosing to lavish their attention on Tucker

instead. He wondered what in the world his father intended to tell

him. Would he finally send Paris away? It was an outcome Paris had

expected for a while now, and he was getting ready to live as a lone

wolf, scorned and without a pack. In the end, it wouldn’t be too

different from his current situation. The only problem was that Paris

truly had no friends and knew no one outside the pack. Where would

he go if he was banished?

“I will be brief, Paris,” the older wolf said, as if oblivious to

Paris’s musings. “I’m not really your father. I’ve watched you with

my pups, and I believe you need to know this.”

A part of Paris wasn’t really surprised. His Alpha had never

treated him like he did Tucker and the others, and his mother had

always been cold to him. When he’d been growing up, his siblings

had often ganged up on him. Maybe they’d only taken their cues from

their parents, but the end result was that Paris had ended up isolated

and alone.

Confusing emotions swirled through Paris. In a sense, he felt
