“Don’t,” he said. He trapped her hand within his and kissed it, front and back. “I don’t want to think that you might have loved me then, that I might have escaped all the years of loneliness. I don’t want to think of the might-have-beens. I only want to think about the will-bes in store for us.”

“And the nows,” she added, giving him a kiss.

“And the nows,” he agreed, giving her his heart.
