Candy Sampler
There’s a wide variety of candy in this box. Each piece contains a word, and each word (except for one) is the answer to one of the questions listed below. Answer each question, and cross off its answer—the last word remaining is the one you need.
1. Which word becomes a kind of sea creature when you take the last three letters and move them into the middle of the word?
2. Which word becomes a new word if you change the last letter to the next letter in the alphabet?
3. Which word becomes a new word when you put the letters FI at the start?
4. Which word becomes a new word when you put the letters ICY somewhere inside it?
5. Which word becomes a new word when you tack a Z at the end?
6. Which word becomes a part of the body if you move the first letter into the third position?
7. Which word becomes an animal when you put a W at the front?
8. Which word becomes a color if you add a letter to the front and the back?
9. Which word becomes a country if you add an A and scramble all the letters?
10. Which word becomes the name of a planet if you scramble its letters?
11. Which word is hiding a musical instrument backward inside it?
Chocolate-Chip Cookie
Instead of chocolate chips, this cookie is packed with letters. Before the cookie fell and broke into pieces, the letters spelled out all the months in the year but one. Can you figure out which month is missing?
Make Your Own Sundae
Now you have five words, one from each of the previous puzzles. Carefully follow the directions below, and if you do your job right, I’ll give you something really sweet.
1. Alphabetize the words and number them 1 to 5.
2. Write the words out, all in a row, in this order: 2nd, 3rd, 1st, and 5th.
3. Oh wait. I forgot to tell you: The 1st word in that row of words should be spelled backward.
4. Remove the last letter. In fact, remove this letter wherever it appears.
5. Double the 12th letter.
6. Remember the 4th word? We haven’t used that yet. Delete all these letters, as many times as each appears, in your letter string.
7. Switch the 1st and 2nd letters. Switch the 8th and 9th letters. Switch the 11th and 12th letters.
8. Cross off every other letter, starting with the 2nd letter. Read what remains!
