4 – Abandoned

Tanner held her hand tightly. They strolled through the empty walkway, music booming through the building, locating the tunnel to Natalie’s seat. Before she went to tell her girlfriend goodbye, Tanner grabbed her roughly, pulling her to him and giving her a lip-bruising kiss. Releasing her, he nodded toward the tunnel, indicating she should go.

The look in his eyes held a longing, mixed with a sternness she couldn’t place. His face remained impassive, only his blue eyes gleamed—with what? The subtle change in his expression caught her attention, interrupting her state of bliss. She hesitated before turning to walk down the tunnel.

Natalie searched for her seat, her eyes slowly adjusting to the darkened concert hall. The song that had been playing when she was in the walkway dreading to leave Tanner, even for these few short minutes, had just ended. The group on stage was preparing for their next number.

She’d really looked forward to this concert. At the moment, she couldn’t care less. She did hear the song echoing off the soundproofing as the music started up again. She knew the lyrics by heart from her
Save Your Soul
disc that she’d played too many times to count. The words seemed to speak to her, as they always did.

She grabbed her jacket off her seat and sat next to her friend, whispering in her ear, “I met someone.”

“Who did you meet?” Her friend shot a glance toward Natalie, who was glad it was dark so she could hide the emotions racing through her.

“Tanner,” she replied. “I just met him. Anyway, I’ve got a ride. I’ll see you back home.”

“Be careful,” Jenny replied, and lifted her hand in a short wave before turning back to the concert.

Natalie hurried back up the tunnel, struggling to pull her jacket on as she walked. The instant she reached the light of the walkway, she looked for Tanner. Her heart raced with anticipation. At first, she didn’t see him. Maybe he’d gone somewhere to sit down. But that
didn’t really make sense. He knew she’d be right back. Natalie walked first one direction and then the other, but the walkway was empty except for a couple of uniformed ushers.
