: With the revival of interest in the medieval in the eighteenth century came a renewed interest in Provençal poetry. In the old romances of the troubadours of Languedoc and Provence, Charlemagne is escorted and protected by twelve of his most chivalrous knights, among them Roland (called Orlando in Ariosto).
