“Yes, what is that, my dear?”
“Our child,” she said, laying a hand upon her waist and smiling.
“Our child? Victoria, are you sure?” She nodded. “That is wonderful news!” She laughed as David lifted her off the bed and settled her tenderly in his lap. “How long have you known, darling?”
“Not for very long, my love. I visited the doctor a few days before we left Eston House, and he confirmed my suspicions. He told me that I was fine to make the trip, but I wished to wait until after our arrival to tell you because I feared you might worry.”
“You’re right, I would have worried – the trip can be strenuous. But never mind that. How are you feeling?”
“Very well, David. I am lucky, but then my mother always had an easy time with her confinements, so I expect that I will, too.”
“When is the baby due?”
“Sometime in November.” She watched her husband as he worked to digest this unexpected news. “So, you see, I will have quite enough to keep me occupied for many years to come.”
David nestled her against his chest and rested his cheek against her hair. “Victoria, I am the luckiest, happiest, most blessed man in the whole world. God truly smiled upon us the day that we met. Soon we will have this child to treasure, too. Thank you for sharing your life with me, my angel.”
Victoria did not reply, but merely clung to him. She had never dreamt of such love and contentment until she had met David. Now there would be a child to love and more to come, God willing. She prayed that their children would one day experience this kind of joy with their own spouses. But why should they not? She smiled to herself. After all, she would be there to help them.

About the Author
Always a voracious reader, my early favourite authors were Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Jane Austen, and Charlotte Brontë. I met my husband, a multi-talented man who is a singer, actor, and university
instructor, while working as an administrative assistant at a university. He didn't actually say "Marry me and see Canada," but that's practically what happened. We have lived on the west coast in Vancouver, British Columbia, on the east coast in St. John's, Newfoundland, in central Ontario, and we're currently living in Calgary, Alberta.
The Marriage Market
was my first novel, followed by
The Affairs of Harriet Walters, Spinster
. Both are historical romances set in England after the Napoleonic wars. My third novel was a contemporary mystery with an amateur sleuth set in the Rocky Mountain Foothills of Alberta. It's the first in the Anna Nolan series, entitled
Framed for Murder
. I'm currently working on the sequel,
Town Haunts
.
