Nessa jumped into the garlic circle and on the bed to Trina.

“One way or another, we will get those rings, we are just going to give you some motivation, it’s only a matter of time” one of the vampires declared with a wink on one eye and a cynical smile playing at the corner of his mouth and then in a flash, they were gone.

Trina hugged Nessa and cried hysterically. Everything around her was changing at an alarming speed. First it was Maxwell and now an army of vampires after them. She wanted things to go back to the way they were.

“Why don’t we just give them the damn rings Nessa?, we can think of a way to survive daylight. I don’t think our lives are worth these stupid rings” Trina said when she could cry no more.

“There’s more to these rings than surviving daylight Trish, these rings have more power in them than any of us can even begin to imagine, and if we hand them to the Reigns, we can say goodbye to the mortal world, can you imagine, all the humans dead and nothing but fighting and submission to some selfish vampires?, our parents knew better, and that’s why they died defending these rings. We can’t let them down Trish, not now” Nessa explained.

“But what are we going to do now, the only person who would have explained everything is dead. Did you see how they killed him, they took of his head, and that is what is going to happen to us if we don’t give the rings back” Trina argued.

“We just need to keep moving Trish, we’ll be fine” Nessa stated as she got up from the bed and headed to shut the door.

“What will we do to his body?” Trina asked.

Without uttering a word, Nessa took out the bottle she’d used on the vampire and poured the silvery substance on Marcus’s body and head. It turned into dust and in no time, there was no sign of a body on the floor.

Trina’s shocked expression expressed all her questions and shock.

“This is liquid silver, just a drop and a vampire is turned to dust. Mum and dad gave it to me and they taught me how to use it” Nessa explained.

“When the first sign of daylight shows, we get back on the road” she continued as she tried to clear up the mess in the room then went to the bathroom.

Splashing some water on her face, she took deep breathes to help her get a grip of everything that had just happened. She only acted strong for Trina, and now that Marcus was dead, she had no idea what to do next. He was all she’d depended on, he was her advisor and her guide. Flashes of how his head was ripped off of his body played in her head and she burst out crying.

She wished her parents were still alive; there was so much she needed from them. She wasn’t ready for what was happening then and she had no one to guide her and let her know what to do.

As she sobbed, she felt a pair of warm hands on her shoulders. When she lifted her head, she saw Trina looking at her.

“It’s ok Nessa, you don’t have to pretend with me, I’m your family and I’m here for you. Please don’t shut me out, we will get through this, and I’m here for you” she comforted her.

They embraced and sat on the floor without uttering a word. In no time, sunlight streaked into the room. Nessa got up and headed to the room putting back her belongings in her bag. Trina followed and in no time, they were back on the road.

Chapter 4

When they were a few miles from the centre, the road stayed clear and there was nothing but trees and bushes surrounding them. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a figure jumped in the middle of the road from the sky.

Nessa struggled to control the car and as she swerved away from the figure on the road, she headed off the road and into a tree.

A few moments later, she opened her eyes to see nothing but smoke at the front of their car. She looked over at Trina and her head lay on the dash board unconscious. She lazily unbuckled her seatbelt and reached over to Trina.

“Trish wake up” she said as she shook her.

Trina opened her eyes slowly and couldn’t make out what had just happened.

“Get up Trish, we need to get out of the car” Nessa urged as she pushed the door open.

She headed over to Trina’s side and pulled it open. She unbuckled her seatbelt and carried her sister to the side of the road. Trina started coming around and she fully opened her eyes to see her sister’s concerned face looking over her as she caressed her hair.

“What just happened?’ she asked as she sat up.

“I have no idea, something just came out of nowhere and jumped onto the road, it’s like it came from the sky, did you see it” Nessa asked.

“Yeah I did, but I thought I imagined it” Trina answered and she held on Nessa and stood to her feet.

“I don’t like this Trish, something is watching us”

“You think it’s the Reigns, I thought you said they couldn’t walk in daylight”

“I know but, something did definitely wanted us to stop here” Nessa said as she struggled to listen for movement around them.

The air went unusually silent again and all they could hear was the gas leaking from their crashed car. In no time, they felt movements around them. Suddenly, a human figure flew high above from the trees to settle in the middle of the road.

He had a long black coat with gloves on both hands. Nessa knew it was a Reign. His hair was brushed back and held in a ponytail. His face was pale and sculpted in strong, roguish lines with just enough character to keep it from seeming too perfect.

He carried an unconscious body on his shoulders and Nessa and Trina couldn’t make out who it was. The Reign started moving towards them and with each step he made towards them, more Reigns jumped high above from the trees and onto the road.

Soon, there were more than they could count.

“Stay behind me Trish” Nessa said as she pushed Trina behind her.

“Once the big sister, always the big sister, hello Nessa” the Reign spoke raucously to reveal two huge fangs in his mouth.

His lips were pink and his tongue blood-red. His eyes changed color from blue to green and his ears twitched when he smiled.

Nessa had never seen or heard of him. She wondered how he knew her name and as much as his sight scared the hell out of her, she held her ground.

When he got a few inches from where she stood, he stopped and threw the unconscious body in the middle of their distance.

Nessa’s jaw almost dropped to the ground when she looked at the unconscious body. It was Thomas, the love of her life whom she’d left behind for his own protection. Anger rose icy-hot inside her and she fought hard to suppress it.

His skin was pale and his eyes had dark circles.

“Had he been turned?” Nessa wondered.

Trina squeezed her hand and Nessa held her ground fighting not to rush to Thomas’s side.

“Please tell me you haven’t turned him” she countered.

“I believe this is the first time we are meeting since your parents decided to join the after-life” the vampire said with a cynical smile.

“My name is Danton, and I have waited hundreds of years to meet you” he said ignoring her inquisitive statement about Thomas.

“I heard you’ve hurt a few of my sons these past couple of days” he continued.

That’s when Nessa knew he was the head of the Reign.

“Well, a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do to protect herself right?” Nessa answered as she struggled to maintain a straight face.

“Haha….. like mother like daughter” Danton mocked.

“What do you know about my mother” Nessa asked curiously.

“Well, I could tell you a lot about your mother and father if you gave me my rings back. They were good friends of mine and their death was such a shame don’t you agree?” Danton continued in his grave voice.

“Far as I’m concerned, these rings belong to us, they were given to us by our parents and they never once mentioned that they were stolen. As a matter of fact they never mentioned anyone fitting your description having ownership towards them” Nessa said smugly.

Danton laughed aloud and the other members of the Reign joined him.

“You’ve got jokes, I see” Danton said as he looked back at his followers.

He then held his hand up in signal for them to stop. His eyes turned red and he looked down at Thomas’s unconscious body. With the flick of his finger, Thomas body rose from the ground and hang in the air. He looked so helpless and with another flick of Danton’s finger, he opened his eyes and screamed in pain.

He looked at Nessa and shouted her name.

“Help me Nessa, help me” he cried.

“Stop it please” Nessa begged as she rushed to Thomas and touched his face. His skin felt hot as fire and it was like his body was burning from his insides.

“Oh, so now it’s please” Danton mocked.

“What happened to the funny Nessa” he continued.

“I’ll give you the damn ring but you have to stop hurting him” Nessa negotiated as she held Thomas and wiped the tears that streaked her face.

Thomas body lowered to the ground and suddenly his pain disappeared. She hugged him tightly and kissed him on the forehead.

“I’m so sorry honey, for everything” Nessa told Thomas then rose from the ground and faced Danton.

“That’s just a tip of what I can do Nessa, I don’t play games and I hate jokes, the rings” Danton said as he stretched out his hands.

When Nessa reached to remove her ring from her left hand with the other hand, she heard movements in the forest. With the use of her powers, she knew that no one else heard them and before she could make out what they were, huge spiders jumped from the forest onto the road.

They spit some greyish substance on the Reign’s vampires and they burned and turned to dust. Everything happened so fast and before Nessa could contemplate what had just happened, one spider was looking over her with the hugest eyes she’d ever seen.

They were huge and one spider’s size covered the entire road. Nessa was dumb-struck and she could do nothing but stare back at the overlooking spider. She knew this was the last of her existence. The rest of the spiders disappeared into the forest except this one that stood over them.

In a split second, the spider moved back and shrank to turn into a human. Trina couldn’t believe her eyes.

“Jack” she exclaimed.

“Are you guys crazy to face the Reigns alone?” Jack asked with that familiar smile playing at his lips.

“Follow me, you’re not safe here” he said as he started walking into the forest.
