“Do you think it would have worked?” Jean asked, her voice hollow. “Brickman’s golem? Could it have saved his people?”
Jethro considered this and shook his head. “I’m sure some would have been saved, but…” His eyes dropped to his ring. “What is one man against the Tides of History?” he said grimly.
Jean looked him in the eye. “Then what do we do?”
He sighed, meeting her gaze. “We try.”
“What about you, Jean?” Ken asked. “You feeling more like yourself? You were acting pretty…”
Jean’s face seemed to fall into shadow, taking another sip of her whiskey. “I’m not hearing voices anymore… at least, at this moment. I spoke to the Tulku about it afterwards… He seemed to think I somehow tapped into the energy of the Jade Tablet when I first encountered the golem, though he couldn’t explain how the hell I teleported down to Coney Island, nor could he explain what happened during my missing time. Either way, whatever it was that happened to me has passed for now.”
Ken shuddered. “It’s a whole lotta creepy, creepy crap, if you ask me.”
Jethro steepled his fingers, feeling now, more than ever, the overwhelming weight of his ring. “I fear that whatever happened to you, Jean, it was part of something much…
greater
than anything you two, or even the Green Lama, have ever faced before. Something that might tie into the very source of the Green Lama’s powers… possibly even the origins of the universe itself…”
“‘Cthulhu waits,’” Jean stated firmly, her eyes unfocused. Jethro could tell this wasn’t a question, but a matter of fact. “Cthulhu ... Whatever it was—or is—we will eventually have to face it.”
“Cthulhu…” Jethro repeated, a shiver running down his spine.
Outside, the wind howled, wafting the fine mist of fog like the current of the deepest oceans. Somewhere in the sky a zeppelin flew past the sun, dropping the room into shadow.
All was not well.
