Jenny

One
Month Later

Jenny
was sitting at her desk looking up wedding dresses and flowers
online. Sandy was so excited about planning the wedding. As much as
it was driving Jenny crazy, she appreciated every phone call and
email from her soon to be mom. Kyle and Jenny decided on something
small. Sandy was a bit disappointed about that. The thought of
planning a huge and very expensive wedding had Sandy really excited.
Neither Kyle nor Jenny wanted anyone but very close friends or family
there. They didn't want it to turn into a circus of people from
Kyle's company or everyone he had ever associated with. The two of
them talked and decided on a wedding in Hawaii. Ethan and Julie had
done it, and Julie said she'd loved it.

Jenny's
cellphone rang and she jumped. She wasn't used to it ever ringing
during the day. Kyle always called her on her work phone or sent her
text messages. When she saw his number, she was instantly filled with
worry.

Hey,
babe,” she said.

Where's
Gavin?” he asked.

She
knew something was up which made it even worse.

He's
in a meeting in the conference room. What's going on?” she
asked.

Ethan
tried calling his cell, but he's not answering,” Kyle said.

Jenny
turned and looked through the window into Gavin's office.

His
cell is on his desk. I'll go get him if you need him. What is it? Is
Julie, Becky, and the kids okay?” she asked.

Ethan
took Julie to the hospital. She's having the baby and wants Gavin
there,” he said. “She wants you there as well.”

Me?”
Jenny asked.

Yes,”
he said. “All of the kids are being taken to Tara and Heath's
house. Becky is on her way there with the kids. She'll meet Gavin at
the hospital. I'll meet you there too. Can you do me a favor?”
he asked.

What?”
Jenny asked.

Drive
Gavin,” he said. “He's going to be very worried. She's a
month early. Since Becky lost their first baby, anything not totally
normal freaks him out. Julie being a month early will scare the shit
out of him. All I know is she is in labor and having the baby.”

Okay,”
she said. “Let me cancel his next meeting. Then I'll get him
out. We'll be on our way soon.”

You
feeling better?” Kyle asked. “I know you weren't feeling
that great this morning.”

I'm
fine,” she said. “Don't mention it at the hospital. I
don't want them thinking I am coming there sick. I feel perfect now.”

Okay,”
he said. “I love you. Be careful.”

Love
you too,” he said.

Jenny
quickly took care of the meeting for the afternoon. Then she let the
office secretary know she and Gavin would be leaving and they could
reach her on her cell. She didn't want anyone calling Gavin. Jenny
went to his office, shut everything off, grabbed everything he would
need, and set it all outside of the conference room. She slowly
opened the door. He was with a client, but it sounded as if they were
finishing up. Both men stood and shook hands. Jenny was so relieved.
She was so worried about how to tell Gavin he needed to leave in
front of a client. Gavin walked the man out. She grabbed all of the
things she had with her and followed behind the two of them, but she
made sure to leave enough space that the client wouldn't notice her.

The
guy left and Gavin turned to walk back to his office. He stopped as
soon as he saw her holding both of their things.

What's
going on?” he asked.

She
handed him his phone and coat he'd brought that morning.

We
need to go out for a bit,” she said. “I'll tell you in
the car.”

They
were in the lobby of a large building. She wasn't saying anything
right there. They walked out, and she turned toward the direction of
her car. It wasn't right there in the front like his.

You're
driving?” he asked.

I
am,” she said. “Get in the car.”

They
got in and she pulled out onto the road.

Ethan
took Julie to the hospital. She's having the baby,” Jenny said.

What?”
he asked. “That's crazy. No way. She's got almost a month left.
She's not due yet. I have to call Becky. I have to call Ethan. Oh
shit! Is everything okay? Everything has to be okay. The baby can't
come yet. Did they check the baby?”

Jenny
put her hand on his.

Calm
down,” she said. “Becky is taking the kids to Heath's
house. She'll meet you there. Ethan was calling your cell but you
didn't have it with you. He knows you are on your way. Kyle called me
to go in and get you. I canceled your meeting for the afternoon.
Everything seems to be fine. She went into labor and is having the
baby. That is all I know. They didn't act as if there was anything to
worry about. I'll take you straight there. Then I'll go get food if
you need it. Who knows how long you'll be there.”

Thank
you, Jenny,” he said. “I worry about her. I know she's
had four kids already and this is number five. She's a doctor. She
knows what she's doing. I just damn worry.”

I
know,” Jenny said. “We'll be there soon.”

As
soon as they got to the hospital, they ran for the door and through
the place. Gavin had been there plenty of times to know where
everything was. All of the babies had been born there. The guys all
joked that their families had paid for the new birthing center there.
It seemed like the nurses knew them by name. They walked into the
waiting room of the labor and delivery area to find Ethan, Kyle,
John, Sandy, Kelly, Eric, and Becky. She'd walked in just before
them. Josh and Lisa were in Hawaii, and Heath and Tara had the kids.

What
are you all doing in here?” Gavin asked nervously. “Who's
with my sister? Where is she?”

Becky
wrapped her arms around his waist and got on her toes to kiss his
cheek.

We
were waiting for you. Everything is fine,” Ethan said.

How
are you calm?” Gavin asked. “You're usually much worse
than me.”

I'm
getting used to this,” Ethan said with a laugh. “She
wants all of you to go back together.”

Why?”
Gavin asked. “Is everything okay?”

Yes,”
Ethan answered. “Everything is great. I've been with her every
second. You know that. She just wanted to see everyone all at once.
I'm not sure about the nurses, but that's too bad. You know we paid
for this place.”

Don't
be funny,” Gavin said. “Get me to my sister.”

Ethan
walked them through the hall. Jenny noticed each nurse look up at
them and shake their heads. Ethan walked up to a room and slowly
opened the door. He leaned his head in for a second before walking in
with everyone behind him. He made sure Gavin was right next to him.
As soon as Gavin saw her, he took off for the other side of the bed.
Ethan walked over and sat down next to her. Gavin leaned over and
kissed her forehead.

Are
you okay?” he asked. “Is the baby okay? Why are you going
into labor so early? What's going on? Have they checked the baby? Are
they sure everything is okay?”

The
room was silent besides Gavin's constant questions. Julie let out a
laugh.

Would
you take a breath, brother,” she said.

He
stopped talking and sat down next to her on the edge of the bed.

Start
answering then,” he said. “It's too early.”

Everything
went silent. Then there was a tiny gasp.

Um,”
Becky squeaked out. “Dr. Gavin.”

He
turned to face her.

What?'
he asked.

Becky
looked at him and then moved her eyes to the side where they kept the
baby beds they would need once delivery started. He followed her eyes
but didn't say anything. Becky walked over next to Gavin, and she
looked down at Julie who had a huge smile on her face. Becky could
see Ethan's back shaking and knew he was laughing. Becky leaned down.

Count
the baby beds over there,” she said.

He
looked back over to where there were two beds. Then he jumped up from
the bed and looked down at Julie.

No,”
he said.

Yes,”
Julie answered with a laugh. “We are going to need all the help
we can get.”

You
didn't tell us,” Gavin said with an offended tone.

We
wanted it to be a surprise,” Ethan said. “That's why poor
Kyle's had so much to deal with. I've had to be home to take care of
the kids. Julie hasn't been able to do much the last few weeks.”

Becky
hurried over to hug Julie. Everyone else was still standing in shock.

Once
everyone had congratulated them, Jenny waited in the waiting room
with Kyle for what seemed like forever. She'd known people that had
babies, but she'd never actually seen just how long labor was.

Do
you want to go home? My dad can call us,” he said.

No,”
she answered. “I just never realized the length of it all.”

Kyle
laughed and pulled her against him.

Don't
tell me you're having second thoughts,” he said, as he kissed
her forehead. “It's a little late for that. I'm going to be
there every step of the way. I won't miss one moment until our little
one is here. Then I'll be right there doing everything with you. I
love you both.”

Jenny
held him tight and looked into his eyes.

We've
got a long way to go,” she said, as she leaned forward to kiss
him. “I can't wait to spend every single moment of this amazing
journey with you by my side, babe. You're the most amazing man in the
world.”

John
walked into the room and looked over at them.

You
two better settle down, or you're going to be sitting where they
are,” he joked.

Jenny
looked and Kyle and they both burst into laughter. Kyle wanted to
tell his mom so badly, but Jenny made him promise to wait until their
wedding. It was only two months away, and by then they would be sure
that everything was okay. Jenny had just taken the test the day
before and hadn't even been to see a doctor yet.

Very
funny,” she joked back.

They
are kicking us all out. It shouldn't be too much longer,” John
said.

That
was when everyone else walked into the room with them.

Jenny
had her head on Kyle's shoulder and let her eyes close. It seemed
like moments later when Ethan came bursting into the room.

They're
here. I'm so damn happy. They are both healthy, and Julie is doing
amazing. This is it. I don't think I could take another birth. I was
so scared.”

Gavin
ran over and wrapped his arms around Ethan's neck.

That's
the best thing I've heard all day,” he said. “You better
tie that shit up.”

Do
you want to come and meet them?” Ethan asked.
