“Trouble Amy?”

              “Oh don’t Jane. Don’t even try to see the humorous side in that. Trying to get them numb skulls at the phone company to realise I don’t care how much of an unusual and hard request it is we need that information, it was like pulling teeth, it was exhausting and excruciating.”

“What’s the big issue they are our phone records? Its not as though we are trying to access someone else’s without consent?”

              “The big issue is that because the station as a whole building has the same provider for every single landline and extension code in here, they don’t keep individual records. They keep a company log. So as the supervisor on the phone kept trying to kindly point out that at any specific point there could have been a many number of people calling and leaving messages. So for them to isolate the information we need for one phone number and extension code seems very hard for them to do. But never the less my threat of having them all arrested on obstruction of justice seemed to kick starts their arses in gear.”

“Oh Jesus talk about make it complicated. All the logs surely are just registered on a computer system. Surely as a whole log you can still just type in the particular land line and extension code, time stamp and date and it would bring it up.”

              “That’s what I thought. But you know companies they like your patience when they have a problem that they cant fix. But they don’t have much patience itself when you have one. And men just like to make everything sound more difficult than it is. It makes them feel more important when they fix it for you. And of course in their minds the hardest way to do things is always the best way to go.”

“Yeah that’s very true.”

Jane heard Perry coughing from over in the corner, as if to notify the two gossiping ladies, that he was in fact a man and standing within earshot of the ear bashing of the male species. Jane and Amy exchanged a quick smile of amusement before their supervisor walked in with Ian.

              “Jane you are meant to be heading home and don’t worry about not coming back until tomorrow. An escort will follow you home for you to collect some belongings and then to wherever you choose to spend the night. They will be outside until six pm when there will be a shift change over. Subsequently one will follow at midnight and then again at six tomorrow morning. The two officers that arrive at six in the morning will be there to escort you into work when ever you’re ready tomorrow.”

“Yes Sir that’s great thank you Sir. If there are any major updates within the search for Thaddeus tonight I would like to be informed still.”

              “Don’t worry I’m sure Amy will keep you informed.”

Jane wasn’t sure but she thought she heard a touch of despise in the way that Ian said that. Even the Superintendent eyed him funny at the comment as though there was an inside joke that he wasn’t privy to. Jane had to remind herself that he wasn’t aware of the fact that Ian and Amy had been dating for quite a few months now, could quite possibly be coming up for a year. Jane hoped that by Ian’s tone that it wasn’t implying that there was any trouble between the two of them. But for now Jane had enough on her plate to worry about she would just have to remind herself to check in on those two when it had all settled down a bit. Perry had been following her quietly out to his car, which when they reached he opened the door for her, and was continuously watching over his shoulder and looking all around. Jane realised he was quite nervous being out in the open with her for the first time since finding out that Thaddeus had escaped. He couldn’t help but check over his shoulder to make sure there were no signs of Thaddeus. When they pulled out of the car park they both did a double take in the rear view mirror to make sure that their police escort was following. They drove in silence most of the way both feeling very nervous and highly sprung when Jane remembered about Parker.

“So are we staying at your apartment tonight or am I checking into a hotel? Because if it is a hotel for me then I will need to start ringing around. Sees where I can get a reservation.”

              “We are staying at my apartment and you are never staying at a hotel we are. We are in this together Jane ok and if you seriously think I am going to let you out of my sight at any point you are mad.”

“Ok, Ok do we still get to have Parker tonight or do you think it is too risky?”
 

             
“We still got Parker. The kids really been looking forward to it and I know you want to see him. With the goon squad parked out front all night and my top of the range home security system we should be pretty tight for the night.”

“Oh good I didn’t want to let him down either and I’m really looking forward to spending some more time with him. What shall I make us for dinner then?”
 

             
“Well your not cooking anything you can just sit back relax enjoy spending time with Parker and I’ll cook.”

“Not that I’m complaining but if that’s your subtle way of saying my cooking skills still suck I know.”

Perry let out a deep chuckle at that comment Jane had mentioned to him months ago that she couldn’t cook much to her mums despise. He had tried to teach her a few new skills but Jane even admitted she didn’t have the aptitude for it.

“Hey I got to admit as well you know as much as everything is going on I cant really complain. I’ve scored an afternoon off with my man, dinner with my two favourite boys and by the sounds of it some romantic hotel stays.”

              “You have such a nice way to put a good spin on things. But I’m glad I can make this a nicer experience for you.”

“Seriously Perry though thank you. I know it’s a lot to ask and this is a hard request but try not to worry. I don’t think Thaddeus is going to come at me in a head on attack. He is more about mind games than that. He enjoys the hunt and watching the fear brew inside people. It isn’t going to be easy but here’s to catching him fast. I get nervous when the little rats escape from their cages.”

              “Well I can certainly hope for that and a rat I’m not sure even a rodent is a befitting enough creature for that slime ball. I think my main issue is I had just kind of settled into accepting the fact that the nice little life we had going was real. And then something or someone had to go and spoil it.”

“It’s not spoiled its just been disrupted. But we will get it back to what it was. Don’t worry about that I promise just hang in there with me. And I’m sorry I sometimes forget how much I disrupted your life how much you have had to change for me. I’m so proud of you. Speaking of which how did you get on with Frank?”
 

             
“Well some good news it didn’t seem appropriate to tell you earlier. But as long as I pass my test on the twentieth I am all set to start at the beginning of July. We agreed pay and a rota that suits us and of course Parker. So yeah baby all good I just need to pass that test now.”

“You will have no problem I am sure of you. God I am proud.”

              “Nothing to be proud of yet angel until I make it. Will you help me with the test? I got some sample papers.”
 

“Of course I will any way I can.”

Jane and Perry had reached the under ground parking lot to the apartment block that Jane lived in. They made their way through the down stairs entrance and up to Jane’s floor. The two street officers that had escorted them from the station followed them up.

             
“We will wait outside your door while your inside mam and then when you are ready we will escort you back out to the car mam.”

“Thank you this shouldn’t take long.”

Jane and Perry stepped into her flat and she punched in the security code for the house alarm that she had activated that morning when she left. But as she scanned the entirety of her flat she could see that there was no outstanding threat and it wasn’t needed. There was nothing out of place from where she left it. Not that she expected that if Thaddeus had broke into her home that he would of done them but still the thought comforted her. Jane could feel herself and Perry visibly relax. Jane headed into the bathroom to collect up the toiletries that she needed while Perry reached for an overnight bag from her closet. Quickly and swiftly they managed to gather up enough essentials to keep Jane going for a week. Jane remembered to quickly grab her phone charger and laptop as she headed back out her door. Like promised her police escorts were waiting dutifully outside her front door. They were looking pleased with themselves that the first stint of their duties had gone off without a hitch. They made it back out and down to their awaiting cars with no issue. But Jane still found Perry looking nervously around for Thaddeus. Jane still suspected there wasn’t going to be a show from him just yet. Not enough suspense had been built yet. Just as she thought they made it back to Perry’s apartment in an uneventful manor.
